Work Text:
Bucks palms are sweating.
He’s stood in front of the giant wooden double doors, Bobby, Athena, Maddie, May and Karen by his sides, waiting for the go ahead. His left leg bounces up and down of its own accord and he’s gnawing at his bottom lip.
“Buck.’ Bobby chuckles as he places a large palm on his shoulder. ‘Calm down.”
“Sorry, sorry.” Buck breathes.
“You’re not getting cold feet are you?” Maddie asks, her brows creased in worry.
“No!’ Buck rushes to say. ‘No, my feet are nice and toasty right now, I promise.”
“Then what’s wrong?” Karen asks.
“I’m just - I’m so excited. I’m marrying the love of my life today.” Buck grins, and he knows it’s dopey as hell looking. But he doesn’t care. He’s just too happy!
“Oh baby.’ Athena coos and takes his face in her palms. ‘We’re so happy for you.”
“Thanks mom.” Buck ducks his head and looks at her through his lashes.
A woman pokes her head around the door and gives them the go ahead.
Buck holds both his elbows out for Bobby and Athena to slip theirs in his, and Maddie, May and Karen move in front of them.
The doors open wide, and the low sounds of an acoustic version of Come And Get Your Love plays over the speakers, making Buck smile again.
He remembers this song. It was playing over the speakers in Bobby and Athena’s living room when he stepped into his ‘welcome back to work’ party, the night of his and Eddie’s first kiss, in front of their entire family. Before everything went to shit, of course, but it still holds pride of place in his heart.
Buck catches sight of Eddie, and loses his breath. His fiancé - soon to be husband - is stood at the alter, waiting for him, dressed in a dark grey suit to match Bucks, looking like a freaking model. The red tie brings out the colour of his eyes beautifully, while Bucks blue tie does the same to him.
Maddie, May and Karen lead the way down the aisle in their lavender coloured bridesmaid dresses. Stood next to Eddie is Chimney, Hen and Albert, decked out in black suits, looking more like a security detail than a grooms party, but looking great nonetheless. The venue itself is decorated in pastel blues, pinks, purples and yellows - the perfect colour scheme for a Spring Wedding.
Bobby and Athena lead Buck straight into Eddies waiting arms, and the shorter man gives him look that’s so full of love, it makes Bucks heart beat just that little harder in his chest. They both hug Bobby and Athena before they head over to their seats.
“Baby, you look beautiful.” Eddie whispers to him.
“So do you.” Buck promises.
The officiant calls everyones attention to her as she begins the ceremony.
Buck and Eddie can’t help but grin at one another. This is it. It’s really happening. They’re actually getting married. They lock gazes as the woman introduces everyone to the day, tells them why they’re there - all of the official stuff that Buck really doesn’t care about.
And then - it’s time for their vows. Buck pulls his neatly folded up paper from his pocket and clears his throat.
“Edmundo Diaz. I thought I hated you when I first met you.’ Buck reads, making everyone chuckle and Eddie rolls his eyes. ‘But I now know that it wasn’t hate. It was attraction. And I am so glad you forced your way into my life, that you refused to let me give you the could shoulder for too long. You and Christopher came into my life at just the right time. You saved me. You made me the man I am today, and I will be forever grateful. We’ve had our ups and downs, sure, but we’ve always come out stronger. You complete me, Eddie. You’re the other half of my heart, and the family we have with Christopher and Bailey is all I’ll ever need. I love you so much and I cannot wait to tell everyone I meet that you are my husband.”
Eddie chuckles wetly when Buck folds his paper back up and stuffs it into his blazer pocket. Eddie pulls out his own paper and grins up at Buck.
“Evan Buckley. I thought you was a dick when I first met you.’ He begins and Buck barks out a laugh, as does the rest of the room. ‘I was ready to slap you upside the head within an hour of knowing you, but everyone told me to give you time. That you was a great guy who was having a rough time. So I persisted. I was determined to make you like me, and I’ve never been more grateful for my stubbornness. Because you’re the best person I know, other than our son. You completed our family the very first time you met Christopher, it just took us a little while and a few bumps in the road to realise it. But now we’re here, and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with you and Christopher and Bailey. I love you with my whole heart.”
And then, a grinning Christopher and Bailey - both dressed snazzily in matching light grey tuxedos - come down the aisle slowly, with Buck and Eddie’s rings in the basket hanging from Baileys mouth. Christopher reaches inside the basket and hands over their rings, before winking at his dad and pulling out his own little piece of paper. Bucks eyes immediately tear up.
“Bucky. You’re my best friend and I love you lots. You make me and my daddy really happy, especially when you bring home doggies.’ Bucks laugh gets stuck behind the lump in his throat and comes out choked. ‘I’m really happy that you are marrying my daddy, but I have a question.”
“Go for it bud.” Buck manages to say through his tears.
Bobby hands over another sheet of paper, that Christopher takes carefully before presenting it to Buck.
“Will you adopt me and be my Daddy Bucky for real?” He asks sweetly.
Buck falls to his knees in front of Christopher and takes his face in his hands. He can hardly see Christopher’s face through his swimming vision, but he tries his hardest to make eye contact with the little boy.
“I would love to be your Daddy Bucky for real, Christopher. I love you so much.” He cries.
“I love you too.” Christopher promises.
He pulls Christopher in for a tight hug, and the boys arms wind around his neck equally as tight. Bailey nudges Bucks arm with his nose, and he easily extends the hug to the pup. Buck feels Eddie join them and they stay on their huddle on the floor for a few long moments before the officiant clears her throat.
Wiping away his tears, Buck reluctantly pulls back from his family to stand and help Christopher get back to his own feet. Buck and Eddie kiss Christopher’s forehead and Baileys muzzle before they head back to their seats beside a crying Bobby and Athena, who take the adoption form back for signing later.
Buck laughs at the tears running down his parents face. He’s glad he not the only one bawling. Hell - the whole congregation is crying with him. The officiant waits patiently for him to get his shit together and dry his eyes. Once he’s done, she calls the attention back to her.
“Now, repeat after me, Mr Buckley. I, Evan Buckley.” She states.
“I, Evan Buckley.” Buck repeats dutifully.
“Give you, Edmundo Diaz, this ring.”
“Give you, Edmundo Diaz, this ring.” Buck slips Eddie’s simple gold band on his ring finger.
“As an eternal symbol of my love and commitment to you.”
“As an eternal symbol of my love and commitment to you.”
“And now, Edmundo, repeat after me. I, Edmundo Diaz.”
“Yo, Edmundo Díaz.” Eddie repeats with a smile.
“Give you, Evan Buckley, this ring.”
“Te doy, Evan Buckley, este anillo.” Much like Buck before him, he slips the same simple band Buck’s ring finger.
“As an eternal symbol of my love and commitment to you.”
“Como un símbolo eterno de mi amor y compromiso contigo.”
“By the power vested in me by God and the state of California, I now pronounce you Husband and Husband. You may now kiss each other.”
Neither men move. The officiant raises an eyebrow.
“Wait, now?” Buck blurts.
Eddie chuckles and mumbles “Yes now, idiota.” as he pulls Buck in for a simple kiss.
“I present to you, Mr and Mr Buckley-Diaz.” The officiant exclaims.
The room around them, full to the brim with their family and friends, erupts into cheers - and barks - for them.
Buck pulls back and looks at his husband. “I love you.”
“I love you more.”
—
Later that evening, after their marriage license and adoption papers have been signed, Buck and Eddie are stood in the small room adjacent to where their family is gathered for their reception.
Eddie cannot look away from the ring on his finger.
He’s got his arms wrapped around Bucks shoulders and his head resting on the mans shoulder as they sway from side to side. Bucks own arms are wound around his waist tightly and his head is resting on top of Eddies own.
“I love you so much.” Eddie mumbles into the fabric of Bucks blazer.
Buck kisses the crown of his head. “I love you so much too, husband.”
Eddie cant suppress the shiver that goes down his spine at that.
“I can’t believe we’re actually married. You’re my real life husband.”
Buck snorts and pulls away from their embrace. Eddie will deny that the sound that came out his mouth was a whine until the day he dies, but Bucks raised eyebrow tells him that it’ll be futile.
“As opposed to your fake husband?” He teases.
Eddie slaps his arm. “You know what I mean.”
“Yeah I know.’ Buck smiles softly. ‘You’re my real life husband.”
Eddie pushes up on his tiptoes to kiss Bucks waiting lips.
“This is the second best day of my life.” Buck smiles.
“Oh?” Eddie frowns.
“The day I met you and the day I met Christopher are battling it out for the top spot.”
“Oh.” Eddie repeats, his voice cracking.
“And they say I’m the sappy one.” Buck grins.
“Because you are. You cry over everything, Buck.”
“I do not cry over everything! Just some things.”
“Most things.” Eddie amends, and laughs at the dirty look Buck gives him.
“Why did I marry you again?”
“Because you looove me.”
Buck rolls his eyes, but he’s smiling again. “Yeah, I do. I love you, Edmundo Diaz.”
“And I love you, Evan Diaz.”
“You know my nickname isn’t going to make any sense now, right?” Buck chuckles.
“It will to this who know you best. Don’t worry about anyone else.”
The door cracks open, and Maddie’s smiling face appears around it. “You boys ready?”
“Hell yeah!” Buck exclaims, linking his hand with Eddie and they follow Maddie through the doors.
“- gives me great pleasure to present to you, for the first time, Mr & Mr Diaz!” Chimney’s voice exclaims over the sound system.
The room erupts into cheers and whistles for them, and Eddie hides his heating up face in Bucks shoulder, making him laugh. Buck leads him over to the dance floor, and the music starts up.
Photograph by Ed Sheeran plays softly over the speakers, and Buck leans into the warmth of his husband as they dance around the room for the first time as a married couple.
Eddie hums along to it under his breath, and hears Buck do the same. As the song starts to wrap up, Buck stops and takes Eddie’s face in his hands and makes eye contact with him as he sings aloud to it.
‘When I'm away, I will remember how you kissed me
Under the lamppost back on Sixth street
Hearing you whisper through the phone
‘Wait for me to come home.’’
Eddie kisses him softly.
“You’re my home, Eddie.’ Buck whispers into the small space between their faces. ‘Wherever you, Christopher and Bailey are, is where I’m meant to be.”
“You’re our home too, Buck.” Eddie whispers back.
They kiss again as the next song starts up and the dance floor quickly fills up with their loved ones. He kisses Buck and dips him low, laughing at the startled squawk he gets from the taller man.
Christopher and Bailey join them for their next dance - and boy was it a hassle to find a venue that was happy to let Bailey inside, but Buck and Eddie had refused to do this day without their whole family there - and Buck crouches down to kiss both his boys on the head.
“Love you daddy Bucky.” Christopher smiles up at him, and Bailey barks in agreement.
“I love you too.” Buck promises and Eddie’s heart melts.
A few songs pass, before Chimney gets ahold of the mic again.
“And now it’s time for the cutting of the cake! Buckley, Diaz - get your asses up here!” He hollers.
Buck and Eddie laugh the whole way over to him.
“It’s not Buckley anymore.” Eddie points out.
“For my sanity - yes it is.” Bobby grins and hands over a knife.
Eddie chuckles at his father-in-law as he slots himself against Buck’s chest. They both take ahold of the knife to cut the first slice.
That Buck smushes into Eddie’s face.
So predictable.
Eddie gets his own back and soon both of their faces are covered in cake. Eddie doesn’t mind though. He pulls Buck close and cleans up his face with his tongue, and smirks at the heated look he gets from his husband.
“Two can play at that game.” Buck reminds him as he leans in to clean Eddie’s own face with his tongue.
Eddie’s breathing picks up at the feeling of Buck’s - very talented, might I add - tongue on his skin.
“Okay boys, keep it PG until the honeymoon.” Hen cackles.
Buck and Eddie blink over at her and grin sheepishly. They separate to cut up and dish out the cake, made by Buck’s favourite vegan bakery. They cut a tiny slice and give it to Bailey, who wastes no time chomping it down.
Once the cake is practically gone, Eddie drags Buck back to the dance floor, and he looses a few hours just dancing with his husband, then his sisters (Maddie included), then his parents, and then Bobby and Athena and countless more people.
At one point, Chimney fizzes up a bottle of champagne and sprays everyone with it, and Maddie cuffs him upside the head for ruining her dress.
Eddie does have to make a quick toilet break, and when he comes back, his heart melts at the sight of Buck slow dancing with Christopher in his arms and Bailey dutifully by his side. He goes over and joins his boys, unable to keep the smile off his face. Christopher turns and clings to him and Buck reaches down to take Bailey’s paws in his so he can dance with him.
Eddie couldn’t have asked for a better day, family, husband or life than this.
