Work Text:
Kurapika walked out of the warm math department building into the literal freezing cold January YorkNew air. As if he wasn't already drowning in his piano rehearsals, concerts, and lessons, now his new Calculus 2 class was going to really kill him. He had absolutely no reason to put the class on his schedule, especially as a sociology major, but he did anyway thinking the class would be a breeze because he managed to pass Calculus 1. Boy, was he wrong. The professor, Knuckle, was a nice enough man but the way he explained math just made no sense to Kurapika. It felt like steam was coming out of his ears every time he heard that man give a lecture.
For this reason, he'd have to start taking time out of his regular schedule to put in extra studying just for this class. Being as smart as he was, he knew this was his best option if he wanted to pass the class. This meant he'd now be spending about two hours everyday at the university's library.
He already didn't get enough sleep, but now that he was squeezing this into his schedule meant two hours subtracted from that little bit that he got.
He pulled his arms close to himself, pulling his black winter jacket closer to him as well in a futile attempt to warm himself. These YorkNew winters were no joke, and he was lucky it wasn't going to snow today, since he wasn't wearing the proper attire. He walked as quickly as he could to the library, opening the doors and shivering as his body got accustomed to the quick change in temperature. Walking around the large building, he found a table with only one other person sitting at it towards the back on the first floor, by the large nonfiction section.
He sat, placing his bag on the floor next to him as he took out his textbooks and notebooks. For the next two hours, he was going to attempt to decipher and relearn everything his professor tried to explain to him that day. If he couldn't do that, he'd be screwed for this class.
To his dismay, twenty minutes into trying, he found himself muttering curse words in Kurta under his breath. He understood absolutely nothing. He almost felt stupid, sitting there trying to understand what probably was pretty basic concepts for someone who understood at least calculus 1.
"Oh, dammit" Kurapika said, a little too loudly, quickly wincing at his volume as he erased something off his paper. The man sitting one seat over and across from him looked up from his laptop at this, glancing at Kurapika. He was wearing a navy blue university hoodie, with a jacket flung over the back of his chair.
"Are you ok?" The man asked softly, Kurapika looking up quite shocked that he'd say anything at all. He should be more careful with what comes out of his mouth, he mentally cursed himself for his muttering earlier.
"Huh?" Kurapika asked stupidly, his brain not able to muster up anything else in the moment. Getting a better look at him, this guy was quite attractive with his dark hair and deep brown eyes. He seemed tall too, based on the way he was looming over the table, and he had a very lean build. He had reading glasses falling down his nose, making him look extra studious. This guy was hot.
"Uh, - well I see you're doing calculus and you look like you're struggling… do you need help?" He seemed a little awkward too. If this guy was good at calculus and could explain it better than his professor, why should he deny? He seemed like a tall glass of water, there really was no reason to reject his offer. He seemed nice enough.
"Um… yes, actually," Kurapika said, "If it's not a bother to you". The man stood, oh wow he was tall, and walked around the table to sit next to him.
"Nah, not at all, honestly I need a break from what I'm doing, at a total writer's block"
"Are you taking a creative writing course?" Kurapika asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"No… American Literature, actually but I hate everything to do with reading and writing so I'm totally putting off this essay by helping you" He said, then pausing, a strained look overcoming him, "Wait that sounded wrong, I'm very willing to help you, I also just need a break from writing… That's better" He finished, giving Kurapika a sheepish smile.
"So I take it you're more of a math guy then?" Kurapika asked, raising his eyebrow.
"Science, actually… Well to be specific I'm premed, English just isn't my forte I guess'' He answered, leaning on his elbows against the table, "And i'm guessing you're not too good at math… so I'm gonna say you're a humanities major, correct?"
"Close, sociology major" Kurapika responded, a sly smile making its way to his face. This guy seemed to be talkative too. "So you're trying to be a doctor then?"
"Yup, a pediatrician to be specific"
"Why?"
"Money" He said simply, moving one of his hands to his face to lean on.
"Liar," Kurapika said.
"What? I'm not lying" The guy said, leaning back defensively and crossing his arms over his chest.
"You're going into debt -probably- trying to become a pediatrician, so if you're going to spend a good portion of life paying that debt off, then what's the point? There's more to it then that, I can tell just from our brief conversation so far, you seem far too nice of a person to only be in it for the money"
"You trying to prod at my life? You're like hyper analyzing me" The guy said, furrowing his own eyebrows at Kurapika, "There's nothing more to it than money, once I pay off that debt it's easy going for life"
"I still think you're lying," Kurapika said, crossing his own arms.
"Well then why are you pursuing sociology? Doesn't seem to be a field that makes big bucks"
"I want to be a social worker," Kurapika said earnestly, "I want to help people, I'm not in it for the money"
"So you're a goody goody then," The guy said playfully, causing Kurapikas smile to widen slightly.
"And you're a money grubber"
"One who can at least do math" The man snickered.
"And I can at least read and write"
This caused the man the laugh. It was a repressed laugh, out of courtesy for the other burnt out students trying to study around them. It was also deep, and full of integrity and warmth. Kurapika didn't know a laugh could sound like that. This laugh alone told Kurapika he definitely was lying, there was so much more to this man he didn't know about.
"Hey, you're free to write it for me if you want" He offered jokingly.
"Only if you do all of my calculus work" Kurapika said, getting a raised eyebrow in response.
"Deal," The man said, standing back up and bringing his things over to his new seat by Kurapika. Ah, he was being serious? "Can you proofread what I have so far while I fix whatever mistakes you have in your notes?"
"Sure" Kurapika responded, figuring now at least the both of them could get something out of this. Kurapika took the man's laptop and placed it in front of himself while the man slid his calculus textbook and notebook towards himself.
As he began to read through the Google doc, Kurapika could tell this man was not lying about not being good at English. He seemed to have no idea what he was writing about, as every paragraph was impossible to connect somehow to the next. What even was the thesis or claim? It was horrendous writing to say the least.
"Don't know how to say this nicely, but this is all wrong" The guy said, looking over to Kurapika and breaking the silence with an apologetic frown on his face, "Who's your professor?"
"Knuckle"
"Oh, that makes a lot of sense" He said, a goofy smile spreading on his face, "I took his class last year, he's awesome… but if you're not good at math to start with then you're doomed"
"I guess I'm doomed then," Kurapika said, using air quotes on the word 'doomed'. "I don't know how to say this nicely either but your essay makes no sense at all. I don't understand where you're going with it"
In response to that, the man threw his hands up in the air dramatically.
"I don't know either! All the shit we read in that class makes no sense! It's like, way above my comprehension level, all philosophical stuff and it makes my brain hurt" He said, letting out an exasperated sigh.
"That's how I feel about calculus 2, well sort of, I just don't understand how any of it is relevant" Kurapika sighed.
"If it makes you feel better, I don't either, it was just a required course for me" The man said, then pointing out something in Kurapikas notes that he needed to work on.
Over the course of the next hour, the man, who still was unnamed, taught Kurapika about calculus 2 and the concepts he didn't understand. Slowly but surely, he was able to grasp at them well with the man's help. It was so unbelievably easy to talk to him, it felt like they'd known each other for years already.
"I actually understand this now," Kurapika said, looking over his fixed notes. "You're an angel, thank you" Kurapika complimented, giving the man a soft smile.
The man's cheeks reddened at that slightly, Kurapika taking notice of it and quickly glancing away trying not to think about it.
"You're flattering me, uh" He squinted his eyes a little like he was trying to remember something. "Wait did you ever tell me your name? Sorry if you did I don't remember"
"Oh-no, it's Kurapika" He answered, fiddling with his pencil in his lap.
"Mines Leorio, I don't think I've ever heard a name like yours before, it's pretty," Leorio said smiling, giving Kurapika his turn to blush at that.
"Thank you" Kurapika responded, not sure how to take a compliment. "W-well since you've helped me with my work let me help you with yours," Kurapika said, turning his attention back to Leorio's laptop.
"Oh right I completely forgot you were gonna help me with that" He said, leaning in closely so he could see what Kurapika was going on his laptop.
The closeness made a shiver run up Kurapikas spine, they were just a mere inch away from leaning on one another.
Leorio did his best to explain what the essay was about-obviously on some work of literature- but he did so very poorly.
"Do you even know what the book was about? Did you read it?" Kurapika said, with teasing undertones.
"Look, the words make no sense to me, it's super metaphorical and the plot line is so confusing"
Kurapika sighed, a little frustrated because he didn't know how to help this man.
"Ok, let's start with the basics'' Kurapika said, "What's your thesis for this essay? Do you have one?"
Leorio paused.
"Ok, gonna be honest here, this is gonna sound real bad but I still don't know how to write a thesis statement"
Kurapikas face twitched at that.
"You're what, a college senior and can't do something everyone learned in high school?" Kurapika said, raising an eyebrow. "You're a senior premed student, why are you even taking an American literature course?"
"Look, I could ask you the same thing. Why are you, a sociology major, taking calculus 2?"
"Thats a great question I don't have an answer for, but don't turn the question around to me when I asked you first"
"Ok ok ok" Leorio said, waving his hands in the air, "I don't know why I took it, but can we please get back to my essay?"
Kurapika let out another exasperated sigh. He stole a glance at the bottom right of the laptop screen to see it was 4:18, meaning he didn't have much time before he had to leave, since he had piano lessons that day. He didn't want to be late to teaching his students, Gon and Killua, he adored both of the boys.
"Ok. I'll try to break this down quickly, I have piano lessons at five that I can't be late for" Kurapika said.
"Oh, you play piano?" The man said, almost as if he was intrigued by it.
"Yes, but only as a hobby. I don't intend to pursue it as a career in anyway" Kurapika responded, getting that out of the way since most people assumed he wanted piano playing as a career whenever he said he gave lessons to others.
For the following twenty minutes, Kurapika did his best to break down what Leorio wanted to write about and how to fit it into an introduction paragraph. It was time well spent, because by the time 4:40 rolled around, he helped him write a somewhat decent introduction.
"You're a writing genius," Leorio said, reading over his revised paragraph. "You'd probably also make a pretty good English teacher… and you have an accent, so i'm assuming you also speak another language? Wait- sorry if that sounds rude or intrusive" He said, seemingly realizing that it may have come out wrong.
"I do… but that means a lot, thank you" Kurapika said, giving him a slight smile and causing his face to heat for the second time that day. "I'm going to get going now, thank you for all your help, you saved me"
"Oh, well you saved me too, I would've been totally lost without your guidance" Leorio responded as Kurapika packed his things back up into his bag.
"I guess I'll see you around… Leorio?" Kurapika said, saying his name more like a question to make sure he got his name right.
"Yea- Leorio…" He responded.
Both of them seemed to be unsure if they'd just become friends or not. There was a beat of awkward silence between the two as it seemed Leorio tried to think of something to say back. Did Leorio want to be friends? "See you around, Kurapika" He finished, giving him a small wave.
Kurapika waved back as he made his way towards the front of the library. He didn't know if he was being genuine when he said 'see you around'. Him being a third year and a sociology major meant it was already unlikely they'd ever be in a class together, and he didn't know what his schedule was like either. What if Leorio didn't regularly study in the library?
That would mean the two were very unlikely to ever cross paths again. How would he ever pass this class without the help of the handsome doctor?
He let out a bittersweet sigh into the freezing cold air as he pushed open the library doors. He fantasized for a moment becoming good friends with Leorio. What if he came back the next day and he was there again? He could only dream.
He didn't have too many friends. He had acquaintances, sure, and his best friend Melody, but no one else besides that. The instant connection he made with Leorio felt promising, like there could be more there than just someone who helped him with math. For one, he never had a conversation like that with anyone before, one that just sparked from nothing and kept going for over an hour. That man was so easy to talk to, the whole ordeal managed to pull Kurapika from his self-deprecating thoughts and all too depressing life, even for just a little.
Kurapika cursed himself for not getting at least Leorio's phone number. One thing his foster parents told him when he moved out was that he needed to make friends. He needed to reach out and become closer with people who weren't Melody- because that's how he could become most successful. Of course he didn't listen to this, and now he was wallowing in self pity as he walked towards the parking lot to his car because he didn't ask for Leorios phone number. He continued to fantasize what could've been if he just had the guts to say "Can I have your phone number in case I need help again?" Worst case scenario, Leorio would say no and they never speak again. And now it seemed that they in fact would never speak again anyway, because what were the chances they'd ever run into each other once more? So really, he had nothing to lose if he'd just asked.
The 'See you around' he gave the man was a lie, he'd never 'seen him around' before that day, so how could he possibly 'see him around' again?
Kurapika let out a long groan as he turned on his car and lightly hit his head against the steering wheel. He sat there for a few minutes, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the wheel not wanting to move. Part of him wanted to run back in there and ask Leorio for his phone number, but he was already running late as it was.
Begrudgingly, he put his car in reverse and pulled out of his parking spot. He'd have to shove Leorio's beautiful face and amazing calculus and horrible writing skills out of his head for now. He had a couple of rowdy teens to teach music to before he could self loath any longer.
--
Leorio let out a very long relieved sigh as the library doors closed behind him and the warm library heater air hit his face. He came about an hour later than usual, having spent that time arguing with someone in his medical ethics class. Somehow a conversation on human experimentation turned into a debate on imperialism and colonization. It was an absolutely infuriating argument, as it took all of Leorio's self control to not punch that bug eyed kid in the face.
The last thing he wanted to do now was go work on his essay alone in the library, knowing it was quite unlikely he'd see that blonde guy there again. He sent a quick prayer to whatever God was listening that the blonde would be there, because he could not write the rest of this essay on his own.
Not being really sure if there was a God or not, Leorio doubted his prayer as he maneuvered through the library to get to his usual quiet spot in the back.
Actually, nevermind. God was real.
There was a mop of blonde hair sitting right there, in the same spot as the day before.
A smile grew on Leorio's face for the first time that day, because he never thought he'd run into Kurapika again. Hopefully he was struggling with calculus again, so he could get some help on his essay.
Leorio moved to the seat right across from him, causing Kurapika to look up from whatever he was scribbling down in a notebook. His eyes widened and lips parted slightly upon recognizing him.
"Lucky seeing you here" Leorio said, pulling out his laptop, "And lucky me it looks like you're doing Calculus again, wanna trade?" He offered, pulling up his essay, a smile spreading over Kurapikas face.
"And I thought I'd never see you again, of course I do" Kurapika stated, sliding his work across the table as Leorio turned his laptop around and handed it to him. "Although, it's only fair if we spend more time working on your essay because you spent more time working with me yesterday"
"Huh, well I'll take all the help I can get, if you don't have too much calculus to work on" Leorio responded, quickly glancing through Kurapikas notebook. "Actually, it looks like you've got most of this down"
"Yes, I went over what you showed me again last night and practiced some more, it was very helpful" Kurapika told him, "so if it's all fine we can work on your first body paragraph?"
"Yes please" Leorio said, almost like Kurapika was his teacher. Sometimes when he spoke, Leorio noticed, he did sound like one.
For the second time in a row the two fell into a rhythm with one another, Kurapika exchanging information on topics and concepts that Leorio didn't understand. It all felt so natural to him, like they've known each other for years rather than two days.
An hour went by faster than a blink of an eye, and before he knew it Leorio had a body paragraph done. He was quite proud of it, as he and Kurapika spent the whole time working on it, and it was actually decent.
Leorio looked up from his laptop to glance over at Kurapika, who was still looking over the essay on his own computer. Leorio had emailed it to him, so at least now they head each other's emails, which was a start. He was still too nervous to ask for his phone number, like he was an easily embarrassed high schooler or something.
Leorio watched as Kurapika bit the nail of his thumb while he earnestly proofread and occasionally typed something in his essay. His bangs were long and unruly, almost draping over his furrowed darker blonde eyebrows. His hair looked so soft, as slightly messy as it was. Leorio briefly wondered what it'd be like to brush through his hair with his fingers before shoving that thought in a locked door in the back of his mind.
His eyes were very large, almost cat-like, and they were such a soft light brown that absolutely mesmerized Leorio. He was definitely staring at them for a long time as they moved left to right, reading and rereading sentences in his essay. Kurapika noticed when his eyes looked up through his blonde lashes to meet Leorio's, making eye contact.
"Your eyes are really pretty" Leorio blurted out during their little staring contest.
Kurapika made a strange noise with his mouth that turned into a cough at this compliment, his face becoming a bright red.
"Uh- um" Kurapika barely said, as it seemed he was trying to think of a response, "Do you compliment everyone that helps you with essays or is it just me?"
Leorio's eyes widened at the realization of the significance of what he said. Ok, he just needed to act confident, this didn't need to turn into something awkward. All he did was casually compliment someone he thought was hot, someone he's barely known for 24 hours, nothing serious.
"Just you" He said with a slightly wavering voice, so much for sounding super confident. "Sorry, just sort of got distracted there"
"I think your eyes are pretty too," Kurapika said softly, catching Leorio completely off guard. He also made a strange coughing noise. It made Kurapika let out a chuckle, or a giggle, something in-between those two.
"Thanks" Leorio let out, "Um… anyway, is my essay good?" Kurapikas smiling red face began to return back to normal.
"Just the intro and first body paragraph, the rest still needs a lot of work" Kurapika responded, logging off his laptop and closing it. "I can email you some suggestions later for the next part though, I have to leave now for a rehearsal"
What the hell was a rehearsal again? Isn't that something theater people do? Do piano players do that too?
"Oh, wow thank you" Leorio said, "Um, if you ever like need help with anything you can email me too"
Kurapika stood and slung his bag over his shoulder with all his things in it. He looked a bit nervous as he scratched the side of his face.
"Well, I think I'll be coming here most days around 3, if you'll be here I can ask you then" He finally said, standing across the table with his hands now fiddling in front of him.
"That's perfect then, cause' I'm here a lot at that time too" Leorio said with a grin, getting a small smile in return from Kurapika.
"Ok, well I'll email you some things tonight for your next paragraph" Kurapika said, walking around the table ready to leave, "See you tomorrow", he finished with a wave.
"See you" Leorio waved back from his chair.
They went from 'see you around' to 'see you tomorrow, i'll email you tonight' in just a day.

Subject: Essay source and body paragraph #2
Hello Leorio,
I hope your evening is going well. Here is an outside source I believe would be of good use to you for your second body paragraph that I did not share with you today at the library: www.xxxxxxxxx.edu
Also, you should completely remove the second quote you used from that paragraph. It does not seem to be related to what the paragraph is about in any way. Tomorrow, find another quote that would fit better, I believe something from chapter 12 would work well, as you showed me today that chapter has much content that could be used as evidence.
Lastly, I apologize for not properly thanking you earlier for your compliment on my eyes. I will admit, it threw me quite off guard and I did not know how to respond in the moment. It was very kind of you, so I appreciate it very much. Thank you. Additionally, my compliment on yours was genuine, and not in any way meant to tease you for your compliment to me. I apologize if you interpreted my tone any differently, as I did mean it truthfully.
Have a good night,
Sincerely,
Kurapika Kurta (he/him/his)

Hey kurapika! No problem there, i interpreted it correctly :). Thanks for the source, ive just taken a look at it and it's great! Thanks so much for putting extra effort into my essay, you really don't have to do so much. i promise i'll make it up to you with my math skills lol. i just completely removed the second quote, and started looking for a new one btw. Also sorry i never said my pronouns they're also he/him/his! Good to know ive been using yours correctly in my head.
Night!
Leorio
P.s. I find it funny your school email reduced your name to pika. Do I have permission to call you pika now? Haha

Leorio,
It's also good to know your pronouns and that I have been referring to you correctly in my head as well. However, I didn't put mine there on purpose, my email signature is automatically set as that to prevent being misgendered. I use it on all emails from my university address.
You may not call me Pika. It is unfortunate the university reduced our names to be so silly, and frankly I hate it. I assume you would not like to be called Orio, as it is very similar to the cookie name, and I will not call an acquaintance of mine a cookie, so please do not call me Pika.
I have spent the last hour reviewing calculus work and I am once again completely lost. So you may make it up to me by helping me with that tomorrow:).
Sincerely,
Kurapika Kurta (he/him/his)

Wow, Kurapika was formal over email.

"So, Kurapika, you live alone, obviously" Killua said, waving his fork around in the air towards Kurapika who was just seated next to him.
"Yes" Kurapika said, glancing over at Killua suspiciously. It had been a few weeks since he first met Leorio, and all the help was getting him a B in Calculus. Tonight though, he had invited his two students, Gon and Killua, to eat with him in his apartment since their lesson ran late. They ordered Chipotle.
"And we've never heard you talk about anyone besides Melody," Killua continued. Gon had a small smile growing on his own face as he chewed away at his burrito.
"What are you trying to ask?"
"Do you have a girlfriend? Boyfriend? Significant other? Fiance that we don't know about?" Killua finished, a cat-like grin spreading over his face. Kurapikas mouth dropped into a frown as he looked at the two.
"Why would you ask me that?" Kurapika said, not at all offended by the question but genuinely curious.
"Well we just don't know much about your life, and you never talk about anyone else so" Gon said, pausing for a moment as he took another bite, "We've been curious about it, we only ever talk about music"
"Hm" Kurapika responded, looking down at his own bowl of food (he didn't like burritos- preferred the bowl). There were many ways he could respond. He could be completely honest and say 'I'm actually a loser who's never dated anyone because I don't think I'm capable of love and I have severe commitment issues', but that would be pretty awkward. He also couldn't lie, because he hated lying and it would be a mess to lie to about something like this anyway.
He's been asked out and hit on plenty of times before, so it's not like he was such a loser that no one had ever shown any interest in him. He just always pushed those people away, if they were even genuine, because he never had the time or energy or the mental stability (for crying out loud) to even commit to anything. Was he really so embarrassed to admit that to a couple of fifteen years olds though?
"Yes, I'm actually engaged to a very hot doctor, we're getting married soon" He said plainly, with a bit of sarcasm in his voice.
"Wait really? How'd you guys meet if he's a doctor uh he must be way older than you" Gon asked, looking a little puzzled.
"School" He said completely plainly this time.
"Gon, he's obviously just being sarcastic, that doesn't even make sense" Killua said, folding his arms over his chest and leaning back.
"Well I'd prefer not to talk about my personal life, that's all" Kurapika said, standing and taking his empty takeout bowl in his hand.
"Not like we're gonna make fun of you for whatever the truth is" Gon said, also cleaning up his own things. "Were both single too"
"Well that's normal, you're fifteen" Kurapika said, throwing away the container in the garbage, both the boys standing and throwing theirs away too.
"Don't worry, Kurapika, you'll find someone soon even at your old age" Killua said, passing by his teacher and patting his shoulder like he was consoling a six year old.
"I'm only twenty" Kurapika said, a frown forming on his face.
"Old" Killua joked, walking back to the living room with Gon to grab their things. Kurapika rolled his eyes.
"Get out of my apartment" He said light heartedly, as they both put on their backpacks and walked towards the door.
"Yea yea, see you next week" Killua said, giving a quick wave as he opened the door.
"Thank you Kurapika! Bye!" Gon then said enthusiastically, following Killua behind and closing the door.
Kurapika let out a deep sigh and leaned forward against his kitchen counter. The only noise in the apartment was the ticking of a clock on his wall and his breath. He was pretty lonely, but what could he do about it?
The silence was quite deafening, so he went to his bedroom to find a piece of music he could play on his piano. He might as well practice something, since it was a Friday night and he didn't have much else to do.
Oh and of course, he picked out 'Liebestraum', a song famously known to be about love, just to add to his loneliness that night. He sighed loudly, walking back to his seat at his piano. He might as well indulge in this self loathing session he was having.
His heart ached as he played it, because it occurred to him that he never really thought about romance before. Those boys really sent him a grim reminder about his solitude and the lack of human connection he had.
But how would that even be possible, to fall in love? How do people just meet other people and say 'I love you' so easily? How do people gain the commitment skills to even be in a relationship? He wished there was an easy way to answer these questions, he just wished someone would answer them for him. Is it possible that he was simply so stupid and oblivious that the answers could be right infront of him and he just didn't know?
Right as he was almost done playing through it, his phone vibrated with a notification in his back pocket. What a pain, he didn't feel like texting anyone at the moment, but he pulled it out anyway because it could be important.

Kurapika smiled down at his phone sheepishly with a blush spread over his cheeks. He quickly sent a response (making sure to let Leorio know he used the wrong 'new' in the subject line), only for his phone to promptly vibrate again soon after. He sat there for however long, creating a very long email chain with Leorio as his half played love song sat stale in the air.
