Gay reflections of a man without a van

Summary:

He hoped that the thrill of the journey and great adventures he’d find in the way would distract him of the pain of his friend just betraying him like that, as if the 18 years they had spent together suddenly didn’t matter. But the only thing that driving alone through the long Canadian roads got him was thinking even more about Min, and that got to some… interesting realizations, to say the least.

Work Text:

Breaking up with Melissa didn't hit as hard as he thought it would. Being honest, the biggest loss of that day was his van.

As he walked to a phone booth, Ryan started thinking. It had been 6 months since he left BC and he hadn't filled any of his expectations. He hadn't been in any big venues, he hadn't been in New York and, most importantly, he wasn't with Min.

He wasn’t sure if he wanted to be with him, though. After all, hadn’t Min left him at the battle of the bands? He didn’t only do that, but when Ryan went to his house demanding an explanation, he was nowhere to be found. Hurt and angry, he took his dad’s van in a whim, leaving everything behind.

To put it simply, Ryan Akagi was in love with Min-Gi Park.

It took him more time than he wanted to admit because, looking back, it was pretty damn obvious. It was all about the little things: warm hugs, jamming sessions, long weekends at Min’s. Things like him playing with Ryan’s hair and giving him cool band shirts (which he was wearing at the moment) slowly were making him want to spend the rest of his life with Min, even doing a little bit of kissing (as a treat).

That had changed when Ryan left. He wanted absolutely nothing to do with Min and any thoughts (platonic or otherwise) that he had of him. But as the months went by, sadness and anger quickly changed to nostalgia and loss, and something else he couldn't describe (at the time). The desire to go back to Min and put things back as they were was stronger by the second, and Ryan didn’t know what to do with it anymore. He dated a few girls and then Melissa as a way to suppress it but, as his now-vanless ass knew, that didn’t work so well.

So now there he was, staring at a phone booth for a good time now, debating whether he should call Min or not. What was he gonna tell him? For their whole life, they were always together, and that’s how it was supposed to be. But now, they haven’t seen each other for months, and Ryan’s feelings would make everything so much harder.

He doesn’t have to call him though! The moment Min stood him up like that he had made a decision: To leave Ryan and make a life of his own without him. And if he wanted it like that, then Ryan wasn’t gonna challenge it.

But he wanted an explanation, at the very least. Another thing that he had realized is that he still was very hurt but was willing to forgive his friend if he told him why, after all the time they’d been together (after Min gave him a shirt, for god’s sake!), he just… bailed like that.

Ryan cursed under his breath. Even if he got over himself and called him, he knew he’d be speechless as soon as he heard Min’s voice. There was something special about it, and Ryan couldn’t help but be jealous (or be delighted) of it whenever they were singing together in their jamming sessions.

It wasn’t gonna be long before the man behind him starts yelling at him for taking so long in the booth, so Ryan left. It wasn’t the time yet. One day he’ll try to call Min again, maybe even go back home and discuss everything in person, but not today. Not in a long while.

Notes:
