Monster in the dark

Summary:

The last words of Jonathan Sims, archival assistant at the Magnus Institute.

Notes:

As of September 11th, this fic has been rewritten!

I may be adding to this later, but I can't guarantee anything. My brain really doesn't like writing sometimes, so we'll see how it goes.

Work Text:

ARCHIVIST’S ASSISTANT

I am not entirely sure how to start this. Hopefully, this will not end up as a capital S Statement, so I will not be doing the filing introduction. If-- If it does turn into one, then Sasha can do it for me.

First of all, the worms got out of the Archives. I managed to set off the fire alarm, but I don't know if everyone heard it in time. Elias and I were together for a bit, but we got separated when a… there was a tidal wave of worms. I was-- I was nicked a few times, and I believe Elias was, too. I can only hope that he got away and is heading toward the CO2 systems.

Who knows, maybe everyone’s dead already.

I’m recording this so that everyone will know what had happened if we don't get out. Hopefully, this gets to Sasha so she can archive it, but at this point, I’m not sure if she is even alive. If you're listening to this, Sasha, hello, I apologize for being so bleak.

Anyway, I was able to get out of the Archives and met up with Elias soon after escaping. We were separated by a-- by a title wave of worms. We both went in opposite directions, and I ended up in Artefact Storage. Supposedly, Elias is off to set off the CO2 alarms. That is where he was headed last I saw of him.

The good news is, even the worms seem to be afraid of Storage. I haven’t seen one since I came in here. I don’t think I like it much, myself. Everything about it is just… as Tim would say, ‘spooky’. I suppose I don’t need to explain it to you, Sasha-- you worked in here for a time, didn’t you?

I’ve never actually been in here before, never had reason to. They keep this place pretty locked up; researchers aren’t even allowed in here. I wonder how you ended up in here, Sasha. You’ll have to tell me about it sometime. I am sure you have some interesting stories. Ha, perhaps you could make a statement.

Oh, I have just come across that table, the one from the Patel statement. I-- It really is beautiful; Patel wasn’t exaggerating. A wonderful optical illusion. It must have taken a very long time to carve. I wonder why they didn’t cover it like everything else? Perhaps they were examining it before the alarm went off. It--

Wait. I think-- Sasha, I think there’s someone in here. Hold on.

Hello? The institute is evacuating. E-everyone should be outside, by now. H-hello? [Sharp inhale]

Hello, there. The table is gorgeous, isn’t it? I remember watching it form, the spider weaving its little webs all over it, encasing me forever. I was making too much trouble, it said. It chained me up and used me for its own gain. But I'm away from all of that now, now that Elias took me in. Oh, how grateful I am.

[Two sets of footsteps echo through the room] Yes, run faster, Jon. This is always the best part.

[Brief sounds of struggle, then metal hitting plastic. A thud, and the struggling stops.]

Enough of that, now. Don't want to mess up my makeup; I spent so long making it perfect-- just for you, Jonathan.

I see you, Archivist's Assistant. I see your past and your measly future. I see your end. Goodbye.

[Distorted, high pitch laugh, followed by the scream of former Jonathan Sims.]
