One moment, he was holding Jon’s hand, focusing on that small bit of warmth, and the next, he was alone in the swirling fog.
And he was afraid.
“You know, I never thought someone could be scared of their own domain. . . Though you definitely are a unique circumstance. . .” A voice came through the fog, and he looked around sharply, not seeing anyone. Then the figure stepped through the mist and he relaxed.
Martin stood there, his face placid and calm, green eyes steady even as the wind pulsed through his black locks of hair. The thing that pretended to be Martin let out a sigh, giving him a soft smile.
“Hmm. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised you’re here. . . It is . . . good to see you again.”

They lay quietly in each other’s arms. The frantic desperation of only a few hours ago was now long gone, replaced with a dull, thudding finality. There was simply nothing more that could be said or done. Only Martin’s gentle echoing murmurs filled the space now: “I don’t want to leave,” he said softly, though without the need for an answer.
He couldn't stay here.
That didn't make this final moment hurt any less.
