"But he can’t run from his own shadow so he tells his dogs, “You can eat it,” and in doing so he tells himself, just take, just devour, so the shikigami feed on him, his energy, his life, and in turn, he feeds from them, scraps of their affection, his power, their guise, their lethal tusks and crackling wings, their thumping feet and snarling cries, all tucked inside his skin, inside. They are not pets, no, a part of him yet apart, he brings them from there to here, makes a shell of himself for them to emerge from, hollow again, hungry again, always scooping himself out to portion to others. Power to his sister, power to Gojou, power to his shikigami and his classmates, his best friends, power to everyone but him because a shadow never exists alone, a shadow walks together, alongside, mirrors and mimes, imitates, spins around the anchor of one’s feet, growing, shrinking, and one must understand their shape to manipulate them, redraw their outline, re-present their form, additive, layer added on layer, strategically placed so what one sees is different from what truly exists. Absorption; another form becomes part of the whole. Creation; in the act of bringing together disparate pieces emerges something altogether new, fresh and invigorating. "
