Chapter Text

“Sunny!” Mari called her older brother’s name as she ran down the stairs, getting to the kitchen in time to see him serving the fried eggs and bacon he had been making onto a plate.

“Yes, Mari?” He greeted her with a soft smile, one that he reserved solely for his little sister. 

“Did you need something?” Sunny asked, picking up the plate and guiding Mari to the kitchen table.

“I wanna go see Hero and Kel today! Hero promised that he’d show me something cool,” Mari explained, seating herself and shoveling food into her mouth at record speed. 

“Woah, woah, okay,” Sunny said, patting his sister on the back, “Let’s not eat that too fast, okay? Even if you want to go see Hero, I’m sure he and Kel would rather not have to see you while you’re trying to cough up half-eaten scrambled eggs and bacon.” 

Mari pouted, but even so, she knew that Sunny was right- he always was. The logical, smart older brother and energetic, sociable little sister. (That’s who they were, after all! So, she would always follow his advice, because Sunny always knew what he was doing.) “Welllll, what if I don’t finish my breakfast then, huh? Can we go see them now?”

Sunny gave her a stern look, although on her brother it looked like he was just trying very hard to be scary but failing miserably. 

“Mari, you have to eat.” 

“But I’m not hungry anymore!” He sighed, and took the plate away from in front of her. “I’ll bring some snacks,” he relented, “But if you get hungry before lunch and you eat all the snacks, then that’s on you.”

 Mari rolled her eyes, “I won’t do that.” 

“Sure you won’t.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?!” Sunny chuckled from behind her as he started pulling  her hair into a braid, “Nothing.” He finished the braid off by wrapping a purple ribbon around it, Mari feeling the back of her hair as Sunny pulled away. 

“Okay, do you want to go see Hero and Kel now?” 

Mari jumped from her seat, “Of course I do! C’mon, c’mon !” Sunny shook his head mirthfully from behind her, trailing behind his little sister as the two siblings made their way to their best friends’ (and neighbours’) house. 

Mari rang the doorbell to the house, then clapped her hands together as she waited for the door to be opened and for them to be let inside. Not even a minute after she’d rang the bell had the door opened to reveal her best friend, Hero and his older brother Kel standing behind it. “Hey, Sunny, hey Mari! We didn’t know you’d be visiting today,” Kel said, running a hand through his shaggy hair. “Good morning, both of you,” Sunny said from behind Mari as she enveloped Hero in a hug. 

“How are you guys?” Hero spoke up at the question, “Doing good! I’ve been taking up cooking classes and I want to try and learn more.. Can you teach me more cooking techniques later today, Sunny?”

Sunny nodded in affirmation as he and Mari stepped inside, Kel leading Sunny to their living room as Hero and Mari continued out into the backyard. 

“Here, this is what I wanted to show you!” Hero and Kel’s backyard had been transformed into a sort of fairytale-esque garden, roses and lilies of the valley lining the sides of a makeshift aisle. “You made it already?!” Mari said, stars in her eyes. 

“Well, it was hard trying to make sure that Kel didn’t know the true purpose, but yeah!” 

Mari stifled a chuckle at that, of course Hero would rope his older brother into making his own pretend wedding venue.

“Well, then..” 

The two best friends had spent a few months stewing over how they would get their older brothers together, after seeing how they pined after each other. “Let’s make the streamers and stuff and clean it all up,” Mari decided after giving the place another once-over. “And then we can do planning for how we’ll get them to attend afterwards!”

Hero nodded along to her enthusiastic words, already pulling on gloves and starting to work on uprooting small weeds that had somehow sprouted without him noticing. Mari entered back into the house for extra sheets of paper; entering the living room in the process.

There, Sunny seemed to have fallen asleep on Kel somehow- ‘It hasn’t even been 30 minutes,’ Mari huffed underneath her breath, rolling her eyes at her brother’s penchant for sleeping. 

It made for a cute sight though, she had to admit. Kel gave her a thumbs up and a smile as she tiptoed in and out of the room quietly, waving goodbye once she started heading for the backyard again.

“HERO! SUNNY’S USING YOUR BROTHER AS A PILLOW!” 

The younger boy winced slightly, straightening up as his best friend ran up to him and dropped a pile of papers and markers on the ground.

“Do they look cute together, at least?” Mari pursed her lips together, “Unfortunately. They’re so sappy..” Hero pulled out another dandelion, “Tell me about it. Kel gushes about Sunny to me so much, I swear if I have to sit through another minute of this all I’m going to lose it.” 

“Anyways, I think I’m going to call Aubrey and Basil so they can help us with this,” Mari gestured to the ‘wedding’ venue. “You sure they’ll agree?” 

Mari took a second to think about the question, “Basil already knows about Sunny’s hopeless crush and I don’t doubt that Aubrey knows about Kel’s.. Yeah, I think they’ll be up for it.”

Unbeknownst to the two preteens, Kel and Sunny stood in the doorway to the backyard, “Do you think we should tell them that we’re already dating?” 

Sunny thought about it for a moment, “No. It’ll be funnier that way.” Kel stifled a giggle, “Okay, whatever you say. Do you want to rewatch Captain Spaceboy?” Sunny nodded as Kel practically dragged his boyfriend back to the living room; the shouts of their younger siblings still very clearly audible from the backyard.

“WHY WOULD YOU WEAR BLACK TO A WEDDING? ” 

“MARI, TUXEDOS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS SOLD IN BLACK!”

“WELL, THAT’S STUPID! ”

“And so is the fake wedding venue..” 

“WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?!”

“N-NOTHING, MARI!”
