Work Text:
As Luz lay on her sleeping bag at night after a particularly rough day, Luz looked at the scroll next to her that Eda had given her after it seemed that she would be staying in the Boiling Isles for longer than the summer. She picked it up and checked the time.
12:01am.
Luz knowing that she was unlikely to fall asleep, sighed before she pulled up her messages and tapped on the name of the only friend she knew would likely be up at this time.
Amity
Luz felt herself smiling as she sent a text to her close friend, who also happened to be her crush.
Luz: Hey are you still up?
The human held her breath as she waited for a reply. Thankfully, it only took a few seconds before she got a response from the green-haired witch.
Amity: Yeah, I'm still awake. Let me guess, can't sleep?
Luz smiled to herself before replying.
Luz: Lol, yeah, you know how it can be. I'm guessing you were up late studying again.
Amity: You know me so well. Although, I was just about to stop for the night.
Luz: Oh well I can let you go if you want.
Amity: No, it's okay. I don't mind staying up even later to talk to you.
Luz smiled softly as she read the text before deciding to go ahead and send the next message.
Luz: Well, in that case, do you want to call and talk until one of us falls asleep?
The brunette became nervous as she waited for Amity's reply. She couldn't help but worry that she might have made her close friend uncomfortable.
Amity: That sounds great!
Amity: I mean, if you're okay with it.
Luz grinned before she hit the call button. Her heart beating fast as she waited for the young witch to pick up the scroll. Thankfully, she didn't have to wait long.
"H-hey, Luz," Amity answered, her nerves showing slightly in her voice.
Luz felt a small giggle slip out before she answered. "Hi, Amity. Sorry to call so late."
"It's fine. Like I said, I was done studying for the night. I probably would have just lay in bed staring at the ceiling if you hadn't offered to call." Amity with a slight laugh.
"Same here. That actually might have been what I was doing before I messaged you." Luz responded shyly.
"Oh? Is there any reason why you decided to message me instead of Willow or Gus?" Amity asked, curious to know why Luz would pick her over their other friends.
Luz felt her cheeks heat up and let out a nervous laugh, "Well, I kinda figured that you'd still be awake since I know you tend to stay up late studying and that you have a hard time falling asleep." Luz paused for a second before adding, "And because… hearing your voice makes every day a little bit better, and then the hard days don't seem so bad…."
Luz felt a small tear fall down her cheek that she quickly wiped away and took a deep breath, trying to get her emotions under control. After a few seconds, the human noticed that Amity hadn't said anything, and suddenly Luz became anxious at the thought that she had somehow upset the witch.
"Amity?" Luz asked, concern evident in her voice.
Luz heard Amity gasp suddenly before answering. "Sorry, Luz, my brain stopped for a second there. But I-I feel the same way. When… when I hear your voice, my day is much better. It just lights up my day." Amity said shyly.
Luz blushed at hearing Amity say that she made her day better as well. It took a second longer before Amity's last sentence caught up to the rest of Amity's words in Luz's brain.
Luz grinned, "Amity, was that last sentence a pun?" She teased the green-haired girl over the scroll.
"So, what if it was?" Amity said in a defensive tone. Luz could easily picture Amity with her cheeks red from embarrassment.
"Awwwww! Amity Blight making puns to cheer me up. I feel so honored." Luz said, the grin still on her face.
"Well, you should be. Don't get used to it." Amity said with a small giggle that made Luz's heart beat a little faster.
"So anyway, how was your day, Amity?" Luz asked, her cheeks a light pink from the thought of how cute Amity looked when she giggled.
"It was the usual. Ed and Em picking on me and giving me a hard time since I'm their little sister. My parents pushing me to work harder so I'll 'live up to the Blight name.' Me slowly falling apart cause of all the pressure of everything. So, you know." Amity let out a slight sniffle which Luz could only guess was from the witch trying to hold back tears.
"I'm sorry, Amity. I wish there was something I could do to help." Luz said, wishing she could hold Amity close and reassure her; instead, she just held the scroll closer to her ear.
"It's okay. Just having you here to listen makes everything a little easier." Amity tried to reassure the human.
"Well, I'm glad I can help but don't think I'm not giving you a huge hug the next time I see you," Luz said with a wink even though she knew Amity wouldn't be able to see it.
"I wouldn't expect any less from you, Luz. How about you? How was your day?" Amity asked, curious.
Luz sighed, tears building in her eyes again as she lay on her back and ran a hand through her hair. "It was pretty rough… Eda, King, and I went to collect a few ingredients for Eda's potions, and we ended up getting chased by this one demon that I can't remember the name of right now. We were able to defeat it without too much trouble, but then I saw a flower that looked really similar to my Mom's favorite flower. I guess when I got home, it all hit me that I'm stuck here… and the thought of never seeing…" Luz, with tears now flowing down her cheeks, took a deep, shuddering breath before she continued, "The thought of never seeing my Mom again scares me. She's all I have in the human realm, and… I'm her only child… What if she thinks I ran away because I hate her or she blames herself for me leaving? What if she thinks I was kidnapped? Or worse, what if she thinks I was k-killed?! She's going to be devastated. I don't want to hurt my Mom!"
At this point, Luz was an absolute sobbing mess, and Amity sat there listening on the scroll to every word the human said and letting her cry.
"Hey, it's okay, Luz. Take some deep breaths." Amity tried to reassure Luz in a soothing tone. Luz did as Amity instructed and took a couple of deep breaths until she was breathing steadily.
After a moment, Luz felt calm enough to speak again. "Sorry… I didn't mean to break down there. It's just been really hard lately." Luz sniffled as she tried to wipe away the remaining tears. She couldn't help but be glad that Amity couldn't see her right now. She was sure she looked like a mess.
"It’s okay, Luz. Do you feel a little bit better now?” Amity asked, concern evident in her voice.
“Yeah, thanks for listening. I know you have a lot going on too.” Luz said with a shy smile.
“Anytime, you’ve helped me a lot, so if I can help you even just a little bit, then I’m glad,” Amity responded softly.
“That means a lot to me hearing you say that, Amity,” Luz said, thankful for Amity’s words.
The two ended up staying up for another hour talking about many things. They talked about Azura, other book series they liked and recommended, and how things at school were going. After a while, they fell into a comfortable silence when Luz suddenly yawned, hit with exhaustion from crying and over the day's overall events.
“Hey Amity, you still awake?” Luz asked the green-haired witch.
After getting no answer, Luz figured that Amity had fallen asleep on the scroll. She could barely hear Amity snoring softly.
Just when Luz was about to hang up the scroll, she heard Amity speaking softly in her sleep, “I love you, Luz.”
Luz blushed a bright red and thought for a second that Amity might be awake before she heard the young witch snoring lightly again.
Luz smiled softly, “I love you too, Amity. Sweet dreams.” She said quietly before hanging up the scroll, rolling over and falling asleep with a soft smile on her face as she dreamed of a certain green-haired witch.
