Work Text:
Amity couldn’t help it. Every time Luz held her hand, she couldn’t help but think about how the human's hands were bigger than hers and how warm they were. Just the thought of it made her face turn a bright red.
“Hey, you okay there, Amity?” The voice of the very person that Amity was thinking about shook the witch out of her thoughts.
“Huh? Oh! I’m fine. I was just thinking about… things.” Amity said as she looked down at her hand, which was still holding Luz’s.
“Hmm?” Luz tilted her head before her eyes followed where Amity was looking. “Oh! Sorry Amity, I didn’t realize I was holding your hand.” Luz chuckled, letting go of Amity’s hand, and rubbed the back of her own head.
“It’s okay,” Amity responded quietly, already missing the way Luz’s hand felt like in hers.
“Anyway, let’s get to class before we’re late,” Luz said as she began making her way to the next class, which she happened to share with Amity.
Amity stood there for a moment holding her hand close to her chest before following the human.
It had been a week since that day, and as she lay in her bed, holding her hand up in front of her face and staring at it, Amity couldn’t help but think about how Luz hadn’t held her hand since then. ‘Normally, she will grab my hand when she drags me anywhere… I wonder why she hasn't been. Maybe I did something to upset her… No, Luz would tell me if I did. I’m probably just overthinking it.’ Amity sighed as she dropped her hand to her side and got up from the bed.
“Well, I better go and meet up with Luz before she gets into some sort of trouble,” Amity said to herself as she grabbed her messenger bag and made her way out the door of her bedroom.
As Amity walked out the front door and made her way to the library where she was meeting up with Luz, she couldn’t help but glance down at her hand, her cheeks turning bright pink as her mind once again wandered to the way the human’s hand felt like in hers.
Amity could feel herself frowning, but she just couldn’t help but be frustrated. The whole time they looked around at the books, picking some out for the paper they had due in their Abominations class, Luz never once reached out for Amity’s hand. In fact, Luz seemed determined to keep her hand clasped in front of her as she looked at the books on the shelves.
“Oh, here’s the book,” Luz said as she released her hands and reached up to grab the book that Gary, the librarian, had recommended to them.
“Great, I grabbed a few other books that I thought might be helpful as well. Let’s get back to the hideout and get started on the paper before it’s too late.” Amity said as she grabbed the three books that she had picked out.
“Sounds good but let me carry one of your books. After all, I only have this one. That way, we’re even, and it’s easier to carry!” Luz grinned and winked as she grabbed the book on top of the pile.
Amity blushed, and her frown turned into a small smile. “You don’t have to do that, Luz. But thank you…” Amity said as she brought the books up to cover her face slightly.
“You’re welcome. But you don’t really have to thank me. We’re friends, after all.” Luz said, grin still on her face as she nudged Amity slightly with her elbow before they started making their way back to the hideout.
Amity, now carrying her books under one arm, noticed that Luz was doing the same, leaving the hand closest to Amity open and free for her to hold.
‘This is your chance, Amity! If she won’t reach out and hold your hand, then you should just do it yourself!’ Amity thought to herself as she felt a sudden surge of confidence flow through her.
Slowly with her free hand, Amity brushed her fingers softly against the back of Luz’s hand. When Luz didn’t seem to react, Amity took that as a good sign. Taking a deep breath to calm her anxieties, Amity started to reach for Luz’s hand, this time her touch much more noticeable.
Unfortunately, Luz seemed to notice it this time. “Sorry, Amity, I didn’t realize I was so close.” Luz laughed slightly as she pulled away and put a little bit of distance between them.
Amity frowned slightly before putting her hand in her pocket, clenching it into a fist, and gave Luz a weak smile. “It’s okay, Luz.”
With that, the two continued their way back to the hideout, an uncomfortable silence falling over them.
It had been about an hour since Luz and Amity had made it back to the hideout and had begun working on their paper for class. The whole time Amity couldn’t get the way Luz pulled away from her out of her mind. It was driving her crazy, and if she didn’t find out why soon, she was sure it would affect her work. So with a sigh, the witch set aside her work and turned to Luz.
“Hey, Luz? Can I ask you something? It’s… kinda been bothering me.” Amity asked, her head down as she fidgeted with her hands.
“Sure. You know you can tell me anything, Amity.” Luz said, turning to give Amity her full attention.
“It’s just….” Amity started as her cheeks turned bright pink.
‘This is going to be harder than I thought… It’ll be okay, Amity, just be honest, and everything will be okay.’ Amity thought to herself before taking a deep breath and looking directly into Luz’s eyes.
“It’s just… Why did you stop holding my hand?” Amity asked, feeling her cheeks heat up from embarrassment.
“What?” The human asked, a little shocked by Amity’s question.
“I mean, I know it’s probably nothing and that I’m being unreasonable, but I noticed that you haven’t really held my hand since last week. You even seem to be trying to keep your hands busy with something else when I’m around. Even when I… tried to hold your hand earlier, you pulled away. I just… Did I do something wrong? Did I do something to upset you?” Amity said, tears welling up in her eyes hurt clear on her face.
Luz frowned when she saw how much her actions had unintentionally hurt Amity. She reached up and wiped away a lone tear that had fallen down Amity’s cheek.
She gave the green-haired girl a sad smile. “No, Amity, you didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just… I noticed that while I was holding your hand last week, you were looking down at our hands, and you were really red in the face. And I just kinda assumed that I had upset you by grabbing your hand and holding it.” Luz said as she looked down, ashamed.
Amity blushed at the fact that Luz had caught her staring at their joined hands before she shook her head and looked at Luz confused, “Why would you think that, Luz?”
“Do you remember the day I first saw you reading to kids? And your siblings came up to bring you your lunch?” Luz asked, a little embarrassed.
Amity just nodded, remembering how that was also the day of the Wailing Star incident.
Taking that as a sign to continue, Luz started again. “Well, after you had the librarians kick us out for messing around, I told Ed and Em that I didn’t think you could be any madder at me, and Edric told me that you weren’t that mad and that when you get really mad, you turn red in the face… So, I kinda thought that you were mad at me for holding your hand.” Luz said as she looked at Amity sheepishly.
Amity just sat there, shocked at what Luz had told her. She couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped her lips. “Luz, I appreciate the concern, but you should know I get red in the face for many reasons. Yeah, getting really mad is one of those reasons, but it's definitely not the only one.” Amity gave Luz a bright smile.
“Really?” Luz asked, shocked.
“Yeah, you’ll have to find out the other reasons on your own, though. I’m not going to tell you a single one.” Amity said with a teasing smile.
Luz smiled back and chuckled. “I think I’ll take you up on that challenge, Amity,” Luz responded.
“I’m sure you will. Also, I wasn’t upset or mad about you holding my hand just to make that clear. I actually really like holding your hand. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind holding your hand more…” Amity said before trailing off quietly at the end, blushing and suddenly feeling shy.
Luz’s cheek turned a bright red before she grinned. “Well, in that case, how about we pack up our things and head out of here. We can even hold hands on our way out.”
Amity gave Luz a grin of her own. “That sounds great, Luz.” With that, the two quickly packed everything up.
As they left the hideout, Luz grabbed Amity’s hand, smiling, which Amity returned with a soft smile of her own. They slowly made their way out of the library and to the Owl House, never once letting go of the other’s hand until they were at the door.
“Thanks for walking me home, Amity. I’m sorry for the misunderstanding…” Luz said sheepishly.
“Anytime, and don’t worry, the misunderstanding wasn’t your fault. Anyway, I better head home. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Amity said with a small smile.
“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow. Be safe on your way home.” Luz said before giving Amity a quick kiss on the cheek and then running inside, leaving Amity standing there stunned for a moment.
After a few seconds Amity turned around and began making her way home, unable to stop the grin that had found its way to her face along with a bright red blush. As she walked home, her mind wandered from the kiss on the cheek that Luz had given her to the feeling of holding Luz’s hand again to the misunderstanding that caused the whole situation to the person who caused the misunderstanding in the first place.
“Edric has a lot of explaining to do….” Amity said to herself with a deep frown making its way slowly onto her face.
Extra:
Emira had been sitting on the couch scrolling through penstagram when she got a sudden call from Amity. “Hey, Mittens! Do you need something? Yeah, Ed’s home. He’s actually sitting next to me playing a game. We’re in the living room. Oh, okay, you’re welcome. I’ll see you when you get home, Mittens.” After hanging up, Emira put down her scroll and looked at Edric.
“So, what did Mittens want?” Ed asked, still focused on his game.
“She was asking if you were home and if I knew where you were," Em responded as she watched Edric play his game.
“Huh, I wonder why,” Edric said, shrugging it off.
“I don’t know, but if I were you, I would probably start running,” Emira said with a smirk.
Edric paused his game and looked at his twin. “Why do you say that?”
“Well, because-” Emira said before being cut off by the door slamming open.
“EDRIC ASHER BLIGHT!” Amity shouted, glaring right at her older brother.
“Because that,” Emira said, deadpanned.
“Save my game for me. Thanks, gotta run.” Edric said, quickly handing the controller to Emira before taking off running in the other direction away from Amity.
“Get back here! You have some explaining to do!” Amity shouted as she sprinted towards her older brother.
“Welp, not my problem,” Emira said as she saved Edric’s game and ignored the crashing, banging, and shouting she heard coming from her siblings.
