Work Text:
Walking hand in hand, Kia took in the sights around her. She had almost lost track of how long she and Mezzen had been going out. It felt just like yesterday when they ran into each other outside of a bookstore. Kia had been late to work trying to pick up her order. Mezzen had time to kill while waiting for a meeting to start. Their eyes only gazed at each other briefly but smiles and apologies were uttered before they both went on their separate ways.
She had punched in a few minutes late and barely sat down at her desk when her boss rounded the corner and told her she’d be taking charge of the meeting that morning. He had been so frantic with telling her the news that he didn’t even notice she had been late. The client at this morning’s meeting was a huge one and if they could land the account? It’d be the start of a lot of great things for the company.
With a deep breath, she gathered everything she needed and made her way to the conference room. Kia had just finished getting everything perfect for the presentation when the door opened. Smile on her face, she turned to greet the client only to stop in wide eyed shock to see it was the gentleman she had run into earlier outside the bookstore! He carried a look of equal shock and the people around them muttered, wondering what was going on.
Mezzen had been the first to recover and introduce himself. Feeling the heat rise to her face, Kia took his hand and did the same. The meeting went off without a hitch. Everyone ended up happy with the results they were seeking. When the meeting ended, Kia was gathering things up when Mezzen approached her and asked her out in celebration of the new deal. They went out for drinks and the rest was, as they say, history.
“Penny for your thoughts.”
“Hmm?” She turned to look at him, holding his arm a little closer.
With a chuckle, he brushed a lock of her hair to behind her ear. “What are you thinking about that has put such an enchanting smile on your face? I’m almost jealous.”
“Well, don’t be because I was thinking about you.”
“Right answer.” He laughed at the face she made toward him. “Not much further to walk. Come on, I promise the view will be worth the distance.”
With a nod, she continued to follow him with their picnic basket safely held in his other hand. Once they had found the tree Mezzen had been looking for, they began to set out their food. Once the food had been taken care of, Kia uncorked the wine and poured it into their glasses.
“I have to admit you’re right: this is one amazing view.”
Mezzen beamed with pride as he sat next to Kia, both of them sipping slow from their wine glasses. “Yes, I thought you would enjoy it.”
“Reminds me of a novel I once read.”
“Just once?” came the teasing reply which earned a grape thrown at him. But he simply just caught it and put it in his mouth with a wink.
Kia couldn’t help but smile at him then look back out at the view. They were not too far away from the edge of the hill and it gave an amazing perspective of the land below which consisted of orange grass and flowers whose buds were seemingly made out of flames. There was a lake not far to the east where fairies born of fire danced upon. The trees surrounding the lake had tar-like smoke branches and leaves swaying in the breeze.
To the west was a small village going about their daily lives. Kia could see a group of kids playing soccer and bit her lip to keep from giggling on the ball got stuck on one of their horns. An adult had rushed over to assist and two quick tugs freed the ball. She wondered if they would need to ice down their horns and hoped it wasn’t too terribly painful.
Mezzen looked to see what she was watching and smiled. “Ah, they will be fine.”
“Good because that looked like it hurt.”
“You would be surprised how much abuse our horns can take.”
Nodding slowly, her eyes lingered on the view a bit longer before going back to him when she felt him take her hand.
“So, what’s your overall opinion?”
“If I’m allowed to? I would love to come back.”
The look on his face was the only answer she needed as he brought her hand to his lips.
