Fish (7)

Summary:

Growing up in a remote village that had neither river nor sea access (and without parents too) meant that neither Kai nor Nya had much opportunity to eat any meat, let alone fish. As fish is one of the most expensive meats to transport, let alone store.

So, one evening, when Kai and Zane were on dinner duty that day, the former raised some questions.

Notes:

Something interesting I found today while cleaning out the family hard drives, there's a small video of me watching tv at five years old and I'm watching an early episode from s1!
Thought the first time I watched Ninjago when I was 9 but I guess not?

This only barely qualifies to fill this prompt (fish) but I wanted to continue with this trend of posting every day I've started.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Growing up in a remote village that had neither river nor sea access (and without parents too) meant that neither Kai nor Nya had much opportunity to eat any meat, let alone fish. As fish is one of the most expensive meats to transport, let alone store.

So, one evening, when Kai and Zane were on dinner duty that day, the former raised some questions.

“Um, Zane? What is that?” Kai asked as he balanced a bowl of white rice and a plate of vegetables in each hand.

“This?” Zane asked as they set the plate they was holding down onto the table. “This is soy sauce-drenched salmon - a kind of fish,” they explained.

“That’s fish ?” Kai questioned.

“Yes?” Zane confirmed as they set down a stack of rice bowls on the table beside the plate of salmon.

Kai made a face that was halfway between disgusted and confused.

“Isn’t it supposed to be gray, not pink?” he asked.

“The normal color for sufficiently cooked Salmon is always pink, I don’t know of cooked salmon ever being gray. Maybe you are thinking of a different species of fish?”

“Yeah, maybe,” With, their conversation wrapped up as the others had appeared for dinner.

Notes:

My answers
