As the last of the monsters faded into nothing, Rue fell back onto the roof behind her. She gave a smirk as Zoe landed beside her. “Nice work tonight. I’m running out of stuff to show ya.”
Zoe blushed and shrunk a bit, her usual response to anything resembling praise. “Oh, I’m still learning a lot!”
Rue laughed. “Don’t worry, I’m not planning to run off or anything. Besides, I can’t jump like you can.” She smiled.
Zoe’s eyes widened a bit in shock and flailed. “Oh, sorry for leaving you up here!”
Laughing again, Rue waved it off. “No big deal.”
That seemed to relieve Zoe, but Rue could tell getting her past this phase was gonna take a few more nights. Which reminded her, “You got any plans tomorrow?”
Zoe looked over with a bit of confusion. “Um, you mean for Fright Night?” Rue nodded, giving Zoe a moment to think. “I think I was going out with my cousins. You?”
Rue stretched an arm behind her head. “My brother, he really wants to go out. He’s excited ‘bout his costume or whatever. But my mom’s too busy with the baby.” She really hoped Zoe didn’t notice the heat she was feeling in her cheeks. “But she said he could go if I kept an eye on him. So, um, you wanna come?”
Zoe pointed at herself and Rue nodded to confirm. “Um, s-sure! I mean, If you…don’t mind meeting my cousins?” She looked expectantly.
Rue smiled and nodded. “Yeah, it’d be real cool to meet them. You got a costume?”
“Do magical girls usually dress up?”
Rue laughed. “Don’t see why not, all the day-saving we do.”
Zoe smiled. “I’m sure I can find something.”
