Work Text:

After the war, Bow decided to take up knitting. Well, he didn’t really make that decision, but as soon as Casta found out about Glimmer and Bow, she invited him to stay in Mysticor for a week to do some “Future Family Bonding”, and as it turns out, Bow was a great knitter. In that first week he knit blankets, scarves, and even a hat made of sparkly wool for Glimmer.

When he got home, he told Glimmer about his new-found passion and she made sure that he had everything he needed. Glimmer even dedicated a full room to Bow’s knitting, complete with a couple of fluffy chairs with the throws that Bow made on them. Bow asked why there were two chairs, and Glimmer simply answered,

“If there was only one I would have nowhere to sit and knit with you. Duh.”

So from that day on, Bow would sit in the room and knit everything under the sun. This included but wasn’t limited to themed jumpers for the entire princess alliance and matching items, such as hats, scarves and socks. He tried to teach Glimmer, but after an hour of trying to get the first row of her first scarf, she decided that she would only be there for company and moral support when she wasn’t busy in meetings.

When Bow wasn’t doing paperwork or helping with the rebuilding of Etheria, he would be sitting in his knitting room, knitting. When princesses came to Brightmoon for meetings, they would often pay a visit to Bow for a chat or some peace and quiet. Some would come with requests, usually the hybrids of the group. He had made cardigans and mittens for Scorpia, who could never find any that would fit over her pincers and he had made countless hats for Catra with little ear-holes, per Adora’s request.

-

It was a dull afternoon in Brightmoon, and nobody from other kingdoms were there for meetings today. Bow had no work to do, no devices to make and no princesses to chat with. Adora and Glimmer were in Plumeria having lunch with Perfuma and Scorpia, who recently started going out. It took them 2 years to admit their feelings for each other in which time, Glimmer and Bow, and Adora and Catra got married.

Adora and Catra already had a little kitten on the way, which meant that Catra’s usual form of entertainment, climbing to the highest point in Brightmoon, was out of the question. Catra had never really gone to Bow’s knitting room, only a couple of times to pick up her hats, but she was bored, so she walked in without a word and sat down.

Bow was a bit shocked, because Catra had never really shown an interest in his knitting. But on this particular day, she couldn’t keep her eyes off of Bow’s hands, which were making a teapot cover.

“Catra?”, Bow asked, getting an idea

“What?” It came out as more of a statement, due to her bad mood because of the lack of things to do that day.

“Do you want me to teach you to knit?”

Catra thought about this for a while. It looked easy enough, and she had nothing to do.

“Sure”

Bow tried to hide his excitement, but let out a squeal, failing miserably. He spent the rest of the afternoon teaching Catra how to make little blankets and hats for the baby, and Catra got hooked, just like Bow.

It was nearing 6 o’ clock, and Adora and Glimmer had just got home. They both asked the guards where their partners were, and were surprised to be told that they were in Bow’s knitting room. They walked in to see Bow knitting his teapot cover and… Catra knitting a little blanket? They closed the door and got their attention.

“Hey Adora”

“Hey Catra… what are you doing?”

“Bow taught me how to knit!”, Catra said, proudly holding up her almost-completed blanket. Adora and Glimmer couldn’t hold back their awwws, which came out in unison. But Catra didn’t stop like she usually would have. She just kept on knitting with a huge smile on her face.

Adora and Glimmer looked at each other, shocked that Catra didn’t immediately stop and walk away.

“We’re going to go to the dining room for dinner, are you guys coming?” Glimmer asked, expecting them both to come.

“By the looks of it, we both only have a few rows left” Bow said, glancing at Catra’s blanket. “We’ll be down in 15 minutes”

Adora and Glimmer took that as their cue to leave for dinner, Catra and Bow joining 15 minutes later, as promised.

From that day on, Catra and Bow knit together. Catra knit blankets, hats, mittens and onesies, all for her kid that would be making an appearance in 3 months. Bow kept on knitting things for the best friend squad, but mainly fluffy socks that Catra would claim to hate, but would wear the next time her and Bow would knit together.

The time was quickly approaching where Catra would have Finn (name courtesy of Adora), so Bow took it as an opportunity to give Catra the gift he had been making for the past 2 weeks.

“What’s in here?” Catra asked, when she noticed a box with the tag “to Finn, from Uncle Bow” on it.

Bow gave an unconvincing shrug, and Catra opened the box. When she took out the contents, she realised that it was a teddy bear that Bow had knit for the baby. It was the first time Bow had seen Catra cry. He quickly enveloped Catra in a hug. She
thanked him and they both sat down and started knitting.

-

Bow was expecting Catra to stop knitting with him as soon as Finn was born, but a couple of days after they were born, she walked in with Finn and placed them in a bassinet that she had Adora leave beside her chair, and started to knit something that Bow couldn’t quite make out. Bow smiled to himself, and continued knitting a blanket for his kid, who would be coming in a few months. Catra smiled to herself, as she started knitting a teddy bear for the future Prince of Brightmoon.
