Work Text:
Kurapika lay in his hospital bed, tired. He knew he was dying. Everyone did
He avoided that fact though, trying to imagine it wasn't real and he would be just fine.
He thought to himself “Was revenge really worth this?”
The nurse walked into his room, carrying a small envelope. He saw Leorio's classic messy cursive doctor handwriting and was immediately stunned.
He accepted the card from the woman and opened it.
The letter was folded tightly into the small envelope, it seemed to say a lot. “Or leorio just ran out of printer paper and had to use a larger piece,” he thought to himself
That seemed like something leorio would do
The letter inside was large, hardly legible, and slightly smudged. “Tears?” Kurapika thought again, looking into closer detail.
They were tears
“Dear Kurapika,
I'm writing this letter because I know you're dying. You know it, killua and gon know it, I know you don't have too much time left.
I wanted to say I'm sorry. There were so many things I could have done to stop you from going back for the eyes, so many things I could have done to help you had you decided to not listen to me, but i didn't.
I thought you wanted to be left alone. Doing your own thing. You've always been like that you know, ever since I met you.
No matter how full of resentment and how much of a ‘lone wolf’ you were, you always seemed to smile at me.
I liked it, I just want you to know that when you die, which will probably be soon, I'll miss you.
More than killua and gon. I'll miss you the most.
I thought I was becoming a doctor for myself, helping people for myself, but after a while of knowing you and being friends with you I knew, it wasn't just for me anymore. I was doing it for you.
I knew you wouldn't get anything out of it but I thought that, if I was successful we could be happy together. And help people.
Once you die, I feel like that purpose I had will die along with you. I just wanted to tell you, I love you sunshine.
I'll always love you. I've never met anyone the same as you, even behind that rage you have such a caring, kind, full heart.
I'll always be yours you know, it's corny and kinda stupid, but I hope that in some form, afterlife or something, you find peace. Find peace knowing you did everything you could to achieve your goal and it made a difference.
Killua and gon say hi, they miss you right now about as much as I do.
I hope with the little time you have left you can find the courage to forgive yourself because I know you haven't.
I love you pika, sleep well my love.
-Mr. Leorio <3”
Tears streamed down Kurapika's pale face, smudging the ink on the paper even more than it had already been smudged by Leorio's tears.
He folded the letter, kissed it, and grasped it tightly.
“I wish I could say I love you one last time,” Kurapika murmured under his breath.
“The fights we had were pointless. I hope you know that. I miss you. I wish you were here with me” he said, now barely even audible.
His hands started to get cold, he was drowsy, his head hit the pillow.
His pulse slowed and came to a stop. He still grasped the letter though.
Leorio knew in his heart that Kurapika had died already.
He drove through the pouring rain to the hospital, to see the love of his life dead. Going paler by the second as if he wasn't pale already.
He walked over calmly, whispered in Kurapika's ear, “I'll miss you sunshine” and kissed him one last time.
He was dead now. Finally at rest from a life of pain and torment.
A single tear slid down Leorio's cheek. He was gone. There was nothing to do now but wait.
And wait he did.
