Summer Camp Competitions

Summary:

When the Karasuno team attends summer camp hosted by Ukai (their coach's grandfather) with the rest of the schools they practiced with, Kageyama and Hinata grow even more competitive. Who will win most by the end of the week, and will the third years survive their antics?

This fic focuses on Kageyama and Hinata, but other ships will have their own cameos and maybe their own spinoffs. It's a mostly canonical AU where training camp meets classic trope-y summer camp.

Chapter 1: Sunday

Chapter Text

Prologue: 3 Weeks before

“Summer camp?” Hinata asked softly, his big pupils growing so wide his eyes were almost all black.

“That’s what he said, dumbass. Now shut up so before we get in trouble for talking” Kageyama said, smacking the back of Hinata’s head.

“Hey- pipe down back there, unless you two have something to share?” Daichi said in a low tone, his eyes falling into shadow, his voice echoing slightly off the gym walls. Both boys shook their heads. “As I was saying, in three weeks many of us will be going to Camp Ukai, hosted by coach Ukai’s grandfather. It’s not mandatory, but Karasuno has often had most if not all of the team attend. I myself will be going, along with all the other third years, but as counselors to help keep all of you in line.”

“It’s like a classic summer camp with an extra helping of volleyball!” Suga chimed in. “I really hope all of you can make it!” He clapped his hands, signifying that the captain and co-captain were done talking.

There was a brief pause of silence, then everyone started to talk all at once.

Hinata turned to Kageyama. “Are you going? Can we bunk together? Will there be swimming? How much volleyball? Will there be a game? Are the second years going to go? Will there be other schools there too? What are the-”

“I don’t know, I just listened to Daichi’s speech too” Kageyama cut him off. “But yes, of course I’m going, dumbass Hinata”

Chapter 1: Sunday

“Have fun at camp this week!” Hinata’s mom waved out the window as she drove off, Natsu waving out the back window. Her eyes were red from crying while she refused to let go of Hinata’s legs. He had to physically pry her off, and it made him feel a bit homesick already. But that feeling quickly faded when he saw Noya bounding up to him.

“Hinata! Guess what! Now that the third years have graduated and are counselors, I’m basically a third year and you’re a second year!”

“Still want me to call you Noya-senpai?”

“Wouldn’t have it any other way! OOOH! TANAK-” Noya was cut off by Tanaka tackling him.

“NOYAAAAAA” Tanaka yelled while Noya scrambled his fingers in vain to find purchase on Tanaka’s head. Eventually Hinata joined in, trying to separate the two at first then ending in a 3-way wrestling match. None of them heard Kageyama walk up.

“We haven’t been here for 30 minutes yet and you’re already making trouble?” He asked, looking down at them.

“You’re just jealous because you couldn’t beat me in a wrestling match” Hinata made out, a bit breathless.

That gave Kageyama some pause. They were basically second years now, they should be acting more responsibly than this. But Hinata had basically challenged him, and he couldn’t back out of that now. “Fine. We’ll wrestle. Winner gets top bunk for tonight”

That got Hinata’s attention. “Alright, put your bags over there and come over here. Tanaka, Noya, you two officiate. Whoever pins the other first wins”

Kageyama moved fast, quickly pinning Hinata before he even realized what had happened. “That doesn’t count, I wasn’t ready!” Hinata cried out. “Do over”

“It counts. Best two out of three?” Kageyama asked.

This time Hinata was ready, ducking low and sliding out of Kageyama’s grasp. He pushed forward, putting his arms around Kageyama’s waist and holding tight. He tried to knock Kageyama off balance, but only succeeded in losing traction with his feet. He slipped and fell down, pulling Kageyama down too. In an instant Kageyama broke his grip and flipped Hinata over. Hinata thrashed, orange hair flopping wildly, trying to break free.

Something about how Hinata was squirming under Kageyama was making him feel… strange… so he straddled Hinata and pinned his arms down at the wrists. That definitely did not help. He wanted to say something about getting top bunk, but the words died in his throat before he could say them outloud. He hoped his face didn’t look as flushed as Hinata’s did from the exertion.

Thankfully Tanaka saved him, pounding on the ground and yelling “One, two, three, pinned!”. Kageyama got up quickly and brushed the dirt off. “Maybe tomorrow you can win top bunk back”, he said, and a little bit of fiery hope flushed back into Hinata’s eyes.

“If you are all done here, we’re gathering inside the main hall” Suga popped up behind them and gave a wink.

They all headed into a large timber hall where they found around a hundred high school boys sitting in front of a stage, chatting. Hinata recognized many of the faces from schools they’d played against- Nekoma, Fukurodani, Aoba Johsai, and a few he didn’t. Daichi waved them all over and they went to go sit with the rest of their team. They sat down and Daichi whispered something to Suga that Hinata couldn't quite make out.

Ukai- their coach's grandfather- walked out on stage and everyone in the audience quieted.

"Alright, I'll keep this brief since it's hot and we've got a lot to do. Welcome everyone to summer camp! I've been putting this on since before my grandson Keishin was your age and I'm so glad it's finally time for another year of camp. First things first- rules. Rule number one: be where you're supposed to be. Check in with your counselors at all scheduled activities- we don't need any missing campers this year again". Hinata couldn't help but notice Noya and Tanaka squirm beside him.

"Rule number 2: no pranks. No, I will not be elaborating"

"Rule number 3: play volleyball and have fun with it. Now is the time to try out new attacks, work on your skills, and to bond with your teammates." Hinata smiled up at Kageyama, who then looked down at him. On anyone else such a small upturn of the mouth couldn't be considered a smile, but Kageyama wasn't anyone else and Hinata knew better.

"Every day we'll wake up, have breakfast, then start the day off with volleyball. Then there will be lunch, a free period for you all to do as you choose, then swimming for conditioning. Afterwards we'll all get dinner then have a different camp tradition each night. Lights out will be at 10 when I expect you all to be in your bunks. On Saturday, the last day at camp, we'll host an abbreviated practice tournament with single set games. And you'll still be expected to play even if you lost one round, so it's going to be a long day. Winners get bragging rights, so train well this week and prepare yourselves. Listen to your counselors- and counselors, I know I don't have to tell you to behave yourselves. Each team has been assigned their own cabin, your counselors all have maps and can show you the paths there and help you get settled in. Have fun!"

And with that everyone clapped and stood up, stretching their legs.

"Race you to the cabin?" Hinata asked.

"We don't even know where it is, how do you expect to race there." Kageyama answered. "And it doesn't even matter, I've got top bunk first".

The cabin stood at the end of a dusty dirt path, so everyone had to carry their suitcases in. "I can't believe I signed up for this" Tsukki said.

"Just wait till we get there, it will be fun" Yamaguchi replied.

Simple bunk beds lined the outside of the room except for the three regular twin beds reserved for the counselors. Hinata and Kageyama claimed the one closest to the door so they could be the first ones to breakfast in the morning and no one cared to doubt them.

That night as he lay in his top bunk, Kageyama had a hard time falling asleep. He turned his thoughts to volleyball to center his mind as he often did. He thought about setting and all the different tosses he'd been practicing. He thought about who he'd be tossing to, Asahi, Tanaka, and of course Hinata. He thought about how he jumped, which brought up how Kageyama had been able to jump and pin Shoyo down- wait- since when was he thinking "Shoyo" in his thoughts and not "Hinata"? He thought about how Hinata wrestled, and how it felt so good pinning him down, squirming underneath his grasp.

Kageyama's eyes flew open wide with realization. He definitely wasn't going to fall asleep for a while.
