Not-So-Imaginary Imaginary Friends

Summary:

Leorio and Kurapika had expected they would be adopting a kid. Maybe not originally so soon, but what happens happens. They didn't really expect Gon to be the most normal of kids either. But they most definitely weren't expecting him to come as a pair. Especially not with someone they couldn't see.

Chapter 1: Didn't exactly meet our expectations, not sure if that's a good or bad thing yet

Chapter Text

"Right, all that's left is the signature…" The red-haired woman spoke, a strained smile sat on her lips and solemn look in her eyes. She clung the clipboard close to her chest, as if guarding the paperwork despite her previous words.

"Is there a problem, Miss?" The blonde spoke, a polite tone despite his clear annoyance.

"It's nothing" She averted her gaze from the two men sitting in front of her, "You two seem like wonderful people, and I'm sure you would be lovely parents but…"

"But…?" The other asked, eyebrow raised in inquire for her to go on.

"He's one of the sweetest boys you'll ever meet, really, but if I'm honest I'm worried if you'll actually be the ones," She sighed, setting the clipboard down and threading a hand through her hair, "It's just that he's never been able to stay in a home for long, always being sent back… it can't bare to see that happen again"

Leorio glanced at Kurapika, speaking up after the look was returned, "Is there something about Gon that we should know?"

Mito froze for a moment before dropping her hands down to rest in her lap, "They've all said he's haunted…"

Her voice was quiet, almost a whisper and she still neglected looking the two in the eye.

"Do you really believe that?" Leorio spoke, tone lowering to match hers.

"Of course not!" She finally looked up, leaning forward as she placed her hands on the table with the small shout.

She cleared her throat, sitting back in her chair, "But it can't be passed off as nothing when so many people have said the same things… perhaps it has to do with that friend of his..."

The last part was spoken in a much quieter tone, most likely only to be heard by Mito herself, however it sparked a certain blonde's interest.

"What would it have to do with a friend?"

Mito bit her lip, "Gon's never been the best when it comes to making friends with the other kids at the orphanage, but he's always talked about this one boy, an imaginary friend as far as I'm aware"

"And that means?"

"I just wonder if he might be more than just an imaginary friend…"

Leorio and Kurapika had been dating for years; ever since highschool, after Leorio had graduated college and they begun to settle down, they had begun the talk of kids.

The two of them had been visiting Gon for a few months now. While neither had said it aloud, they both knew they had found the completing piece to their little family

The talk of his haunting hardly scared them off. If anything it only drew them in ever closer.

So here they are, newly adopted 12 year old son sitting in the backseat of their car seemingly having a conversation with himself.

Kurapika and Leorio shared a glance, turning to the backseat after reaching a stop light.

Leorio waited until Gon had finished his sentence and asked, "Who are you talking to bud?"

He looked up, beaming as he answered, "Killua!"

"Oh? Who's that?" The light turned to green and Leorio began driving as the other spoke.

"He's my best friend!"

"Really now? Do you think you can tell us about him?"

Gon's face lit up, somehow managing to smile even wider and began talking.

The rest of the car ride was filled with gushing chatter about his so-called "best friend".

When Mito had told them that Gon had trouble making friends it had surprised them both.

He never seemed to have any trouble talking to them or any of the caretakers that were around; quite the opposite actually.

With such a seemingly stark difference they had assumed that he might have only known how to talk to adults. Usually it would be the other way around but hey, it wouldn't be the only thing that made him stand out.

But after arriving at the apartment they learned that that was anything but true. He didn't seem to have any trouble getting along with others or talking to them. Surely had he tried to befriend the other orphans they would have gotten along swimmingly.

But it seemed he didn't want to. He was content with the imaginary friend he had made.

That was what surprised them the most, or Kurapika at least. He had assumed that there was some external reason why Gon hadn't made any friends and that less to him creating an imaginary one.

But from what he had just heard Gon hadn't made any friends because of his already "existing" one.

And that was fine. More than fine, actually. Surprises like this were what had drawn Kurapika to him to begin with, they were somewhat expected.

Of course, a surprise he hadn't expected was when they had gone into his new room to say good night, only to find him sitting on the bed, playing rock paper scissors with a boy they were certain hadn't been let into the house.
