1st Grade

“Wait up Wildcat! I don’t know about this!”

Heavy breathes follow as the scorpioni trails her feet after the excited magicat speeding ahead. The playground was full of children, both human and hybrid, but there was a wide clearing where the tiny magicat was heading towards a group of 3 children. As she got closer to the group, the magicat kitten suddenly crouched and bounced onto the little blond-haired girl in the middle, pushing her to the ground face first.

“Ow! What was that for Catra?!” The little girl grunted as she pushed herself up with her little arms and the magicat, Catra, tumbled off her back and onto the ground.

The best thing about tonight's that we're not fighting

It couldn't be that we have been this way before

I know you don't think that I am trying

I know you're wearing thin down to the core

As Catra got up and shook her head clear of dust, she began to smirk while turning towards the blond. Her smirk grew wider, showing a little sharp fang, as she sat there staring at the girl in front of her, growing more irritated at the sudden attack. The scorpioni ran to Catra’s side, huffing heavily as she leaned her pincers on her knees to catch her young breath.

“Told you *huff* it was *huff* a bad idea *huff* Wildcat.” After a deep breath, the scorpioni continued. ”Wow you’re really fast, I’m going to need to run more to catch up to you. Hi guys! Sorry about Wildcat, she was just bored and thought it would be fun if we all played together!”

Catra just grunted as she turned to the taller girl, her smirk completely gone now. “That’s not why I came over Scorpia, I saw Adora and wanted to see if she really was the strongest in the class. Clearly not if she falls so fast from just one little pounce.” Catra then pursed her lips in a mock sad face, “Sowwy Adowa, guess you’re not as strong as you thought.”

But hold your breath

Adora’s face turned beet red in embarrassment, but before she could react, the little pink-haired girl just stomped her foot and stood in front of Adora before poing Catra in the chest. “You think you’re so funny, but you shouldn’t be talking, being the smallest one here, you lousy cat.” She stuck her tongue out, then grabbed Adora by the arm and nudged her away, “Let’s go Adora, I don’t want to get in trouble with Mrs. Ella.”

Catra chuckles and blows a raspberry as the trio starts to leave. “Pshh, go ahead and run Sparkles! If you and Arrows are scared of even Spinny, then no wonder you guys stick together.”

Before turning around to join her friends, Catra’s heterochromatic eyes meet Adora’s. Blue and yellow staring directly into blue-gray, a hint of a spark shared between the kids, before blue-gray eyes turn back and walk away, leaving blue and yellow eyes to blink out of the moment and continue on with her day.

Because tonight will be the night that I will fall for you

Over again

Don't make me change my mind

Or I won't live to see another day

I swear its true

Because a girl like you is impossible to find

You're impossible to find

“FOOD FIIIIIIGHT!” Some slimy gravy lands on the back of Adora’s head as those words are uttered from a very familiar magicat. “Catra” she grumbles under her breath, before she grabs the pizza on her plate and turns to aim at her furry enemy. Before she can find her target however, a handful of hashbrowns are thrown from her left. She immediately throws her pizza in that direction, hoping to land on its desired target.

“Aughh! Adora! You’re supposed to throw at the enemies, not your friends!” Glimmer shouts in annoyance. Clearly the pizza was aimed at the wrong target, Adora looks around the cafeteria to find a bundle of purple hair formed into a barrier in the corner. “Bingo!”

Adora dodges food left and right as she slowly reaches the bundle of hair, then grabs the closest pile of food to throw over the wall of hair, waiting for a reaction from the victims.

“Damnit! I thought you said we’d be safe here ‘Trap! This doesn’t look safe!” The familiar voice yelled behind the wall. Another voice began humming in acknowledgement before speaking, “Well, I did predict there to be a 5% chance of someone trying to launch objects over the barrier. In that case, we would be open to attack, unfortunately”

“Whatever, get me out of this so I can take revenge! Scorp, you stay to defend Entrapta.” Catra then emerged from the wall of hair, only to come face to face with Adora, hands refilled with food goop. Before Catra could register what happened, the goop was already covering her from head to toe. As she looked from herself to her attacker, she noticed a shit-eating grin on Adora, as if she was admiring her handiwork.

Just as Catra was about to throw some of the goop back at Adora, an ear piercing screech echoes throughout the cafeteria and every student halts at once. All heads turn to the cause of the sound, to find Principal Angella Moon standing in the door entrance with a horrified expression. “Who started-- actually, it doesn’t matter. All of you!” She points at both the students holding food and the ones covered in the mess; Catra, Scorpia, Entrapta, Adora, Glimmer and Bow; before continuing, “Detention after school. I expect to see this cafeteria spotless. And please clean yourselves before going to class” She sighs before leaving the troublemakers in silence.

This is not what I intended

I always swore to you I'd never fall apart

You always thought that I was stronger

I may have failed

But I have loved you from the start

Adora just stares at Catra after the principal leaves, clearly upset over the detention. “Did you really have to start a food fight? What was the point anyway?” Adora was clearly exasperated with Catra’s antics. There’s always been something ever since they met, it was like this magicat was a magnet for trouble and Adora could never get far enough away before the damage was dealt.

Catra just waves her off and chuckles lightly. “You worry too much princess, not everything is about you. I was bored and thought the cafeteria needed a pop of color.” Catra stared straight into Adora’s eyes before turning around and walking to Scorpia and Entrapta, heading towards the locker room showers. Adora just stares back in bewilderment, blinks out of her haze and walks towards Glimmer and Bow, the former practically fuming at the thought of detention from her own mother.

Oh, but hold your breath

Because tonight will be the night that I will fall for you

Over again

Don't make me change my mind

I won't live to see another day

I swear it's true

Because a girl like you is impossible to find

It's impossible to find

“Come on Blondie. I thought you wanted to come to this dance to have fun. Sitting here all night doesn’t sound like fun.” Huntara admonishes Adora for the third time that night as she sits on the bleachers. Adora was confused, she originally was excited to be at the homecoming dance with the captain of the wrestling team, but that all changed when a certain cat walked in with the captain of the lacrosse team.

“Why did it have to be Lonnie, she literally could have picked anyone else. Why Lonnie of all people? They don’t even like each other” Adora was too busy mumbling to herself to notice Huntara walking away and Bow and Glimmer coming up beside her. Bow was the first to break her train of thought. “Hey buddy, why aren’t you with Huntara? I saw her talking to another wrestler, things not working out?” his voice full of concern.

Adora let out a deep sigh and turned her gaze from Catra to her friends. “I don’t know, I thought it would be a fun night but all I can think about is how Catra probably came with Lonnie just to annoy me since she knows the soccer and lacrosse teams are always fighting. I mean, what other reason could there be right? It’s not like she likes her or anything, that doesn’t make any--”

“Woah, woah. Deep breath Adora. Breathe” Adora did as she was told, before Bow continued “Do you maybe think you’re jealous?” Once Bow finished his sentence, Adora just sputtered out incoherent words. “Pfft. What? What are you-- no way -- that’s stupid -- now THAT makes less sense. No way. There’s no way. She’s -- I mean -- What -- Why would you think that Bow?”

Before Bow could speak, Glimmer just groaned and interjected “You’re both idiots. She obviously brought Lonnie to make you jealous. Just go talk to her before I start gagging at you useless lesbians” She then grabbed Bow’s arm and dragged him away and left Adora to her thoughts.

“There’s no way Catra likes me. That’s just stupid, right?” She mumbled to herself as she lifted her eyes up to scan the room, in search of a certain pair of blue and yellow eyes. As if on cue, blue and yellow eyes met with gray-blue for an instant, before separating and turning back to her date in what seemed to look like boredom. But that must have been Adora’s eyes tricking her because there was no way.

So breathe in so deep

Breathe me in

I'm yours to keep

And hold onto your words

'Cause talk is cheap

And remember me tonight when you're asleep

12th Grade

“Wahhhh! I’m gonna miss you so much Wildcat!” Scorpia squeezed Catra harder as she was wailing. “Scorp! Can’t breathe!” Scorpia reluctantly let go as she continued to cry. “But *sniff* you’re moving to the other side of the country and Entrapta is going overseas for a scholarship. We won’t be the Super Pal Trio anymore!”

Catra began to pat Scorpia’s arm with a small smile on her lips, “Don’t worry you big baby. We’ll still talk every day and me and Trap can come visit on breaks and stuff. We’ll still be the Super Pal Trio or whatever” she mumbled the last bit, embarrassed to admit the group name they were given from childhood.

Entrapta stopped typing on her laptop to curl a bit of hair around Scorpia’s other arm, “Fear not Scorpia, according to my calculations, there is a 0.0005% chance of our group you call the Super Pal Trio from ceasing to communicate and losing all connection with each other. So I believe we will stay friendly with one another throughout our college years and after as well” She smiled brightly before Scorpia started laughing and grabbed the two in a big group hug. “Oh you guys, I’m gonna miss you both so much. We HAVE to facetime everyday or at least once a week. OH! Like a Super Pal Trio Weekly check in! Yep, that sounds like a plan!”

As the trio laughed and chatted before separating for the next four years, another trio not far away was also sharing their own goodbyes.

“Bow, it’s only for four years. We won’t be gone forever.” Adora chuckled through his tight hug. He just sniffled before answering, “But that means no more Best Friend Squad sleepovers! Do you know how horrible that is?! You have to promise to take pictures once you get off the plane! We need designated Best Friend Squad calls every night. I won’t be able to survive without it!”

“Oh Bow, quit being a baby. She’s only going to be a few states away, it’s not like she’ll be on the other side of the country! And she’ll be back for breaks so it won’t be forever.” Glimmer waved him off, but her own tears threatening to spill betrayed her uncaring attitude.

Adora felt her own tears starting at watching her two best friends, “Come on guys, you’re going to make me start crying now.” They joined in a group hug, as Adora noticed from the corner of her eye Catra and her friends. They locked eyes as both groups ended their group hugs and Catra began to walk towards Adora.

As Adora walked to meet her halfway, Catra suddenly brought out her hand a truce before speaking, “Guess we’re both getting out of here huh?” Adora took her hand and shook it lightly, “Looks like it. Guess this is goodbye, huh, brat?”

Catra just chuckled lightheartedly at the childhood nickname, “Goodbye, for now. See you around princess.” And Catra walked away while waving her hand back.

5 Year HS Reunion

“Adora!” Two pairs of arms wrap around Adora as she enters the once large gymnasium. As she looks around the celebration that brought her back to her High School, Bow and Glimmer release her and nod in approval before Bow speaks first, “You’ve really taken the gym workouts seriously during college, haven’t you Adora?”

It was true, aside from getting a full sports scholarship, Adora continued training in the gym religiously even after college ended and she was recruited to be a professional soccer player. She decided to wear a simple red dress to show off her arms that she was the most proud of, and to maybe make a few former classmates jealous. So far she couldn’t see Lonnie or Huntara but she wondered who was more fit out of the three of them

Just as that thought came into her mind, it immediately left when she noticed a familiar pair of ears and tail walk into the gymnasium. What she didn’t notice was the air of confidence the magicat walked in with, wearing a stunning maroon suit with the first few buttons loose and the tie undone, as if she knew exactly what she was doing.

Adora swallowed hard as she stared at her… foe? Frenemy? She didn’t know what they were, but she definitely wanted to talk to her and catch up on the last 5 years. “Hey guys, I’ll be right back.” She didn’t even look at her friends as she started walking towards her goal, never once taking her eyes off her.

As she walked forward, that pair of blue and yellow eyes turned to lay on her and a kind smile spread on her face. Catra began walking towards Adora as well, as if there was an electric pull bringing them closer together.

“Hi.” Adora whispered as she reached the magicat, close enough for her to pick up the greeting with her ears. The background music began changing to a slower song and so Catra had an idea.

“Hi” she breathed out, before lifting her hand up in invitation. “Dance with me?” A glint in her eyes showed in the darkness of the gymnasium as Adora slowly fit her hand in Catra’s. They glided over to the dance floor, Catra moving her hands firmly on Adora’s waist, as Adora brings her hands around Catra’s neck.

Tonight will be the night that I will fall for you

Over again

They sway to the music, in almost a trance, as Adora begins to lay her head on Catra’s left shoulder. What feels like hours is only minutes, but the crowded gym blurs in the background and both women only notice the other in front of them. Adora hears the heavy breaths on her neck, as Catra feels a loud heartbeat. Unsure whether it’s coming from herself or her dance partner.

Catra then slowly pushes Adora to look her in the eyes, a look of determination, before whispering in her ear, “Can we talk outside?” and looking back at her, waiting for her answer. Adora just nods dumbly and follows Catra and she leads them outside, hand in hand, to a fire exit.

The light breeze runs a chill down Adora’s spine before she sits down on the short stairs, next to Catra. As she holds onto the railing to sit down, Catra runs her hand through her now pixie cut style and breathes out a sigh. “You look amazing tonight, you know that?”

That catches Adora off guard. Sure they just danced together, but she has never once gotten a compliment from Catra in her life. Before she could comprehend the words to reply, Catra continued. “I can’t even remember how many times I’ve wanted to tell you that, but my stupid denial would always say the opposite. I remember back in jr. high before the homecoming dance, I tried to get the courage to tell you, but then I saw Huntara ask you first and I just got so annoyed at that but I don’t know why I--”

Adora quickly cut her off with her fingers on Catra’s mouth. Her brain had finally caught up with the situation, but she was still confused with everything Catra just spewed out. A twinge of hope started to form and she asked, “Hold on, what are you saying?”

Don't make me change my mind

I won't live to see another day

I swear it's true

Catra slowly took Adora’s fingers into her hand and kissed her knuckles before looking her in the eyes with a heat that made Adora blush unconsciously. “What I mean is…” Catra’s eyes closed for what felt like an eternity, before slowly opening with a renewed determination and passion Adora had never seen pointed towards her before. It took her a second to realize Catra was speaking again, “...mean is, I love you Adora. I always have. I had a pretty messed up way of showing it back when we were kids, and I was definitely in denial when we got a bit older. But these last 5 years without you? I would always just randomly think about how you would have liked it here, or if you would have enjoyed this local coffee shop. It just made me miss you more and I couldn’t wait to come back and see you. So I promised myself that I would tell you how I feel the next time I saw you, even if you don’t feel the same. At least now you know why I was just a brat all these years”

Adora just chuckled at that last statement, thinking back to all the times her and Catra would pick on each other. Then the jr. high homecoming suddenly comes to her mind and she remembers what Catra just said about it. “Wait a minute, were you jealous of Huntara?” She asks with a playful smirk.

Catra coughs as she turns her head away from Adora, “Well you can’t really blame me, Everyone knew that you had a thing for buff chicks and I wasn’t exactly lifting dumbbells back then.” A faint pink hue is evident on Catras cheeks as Adora peaks over, and a warmth in her chest grows as she takes her hand to turn Catra’s face back towards her own. She moves her hand down to caress her cheek as she whispers out her confession, “You know I was jealous of you bringing Lonnie to the homecoming and I didn’t dance with Huntara because of how annoyed I was at that?”

Catra’s eyes fly open, completely not expecting to hear those words. “What do you mean, Adora?” She asks hesitantly, as if one wrong word will destroy the magic that’s happening right in front of her. Adora giggles at that, “What I mean is, I love you too. I think I have for a while but I was just too blind to figure it out until now.”

As Adora opens her eyes back up, Catra delicately grabs her face and slowly leans in closer. Adora’s breath hitches as she slightly gasps at what is about to happen. But then Catra suddenly stops, lips barely touching, breaths mixing together, and she asks, “Can I?”

Before Catra can finish her question, Adora closes the gap and moves her hand behind Catra’s neck, sliding it through her hair. The kiss is like nothing Adora has felt before. It’s like electricity going through their bodies, they move closer to get rid of the gap between them and hands begin to roam through blond and brunette hair. Adora bites her bottom lip for entry and Catra glady gives it to her. Tongues now wrestling for dominance, both savoring this ecstasy that has been long overdue.

As Catra slowly backs away, she leans her forehead on Adora’s and sighs contently before giggling to herself. “I can’t believe it took us this long to confess to each other”

Adora then also began to laugh at the absurdity of it all. “At least the pranks are over now, right?” She asks, as she slowly turns and looks up at the sky. A bright full moon, with clear skies, the perfect night to sit outside and confess your undying love to your former frenemy.

Catra turns as well and looks up at the same sky. She leans her head on Adoras  and intertwines their fingers together, before asking her last question of the night. “Will you be my girlfriend?” She rubs her thumb over Adoras knuckles in a question.

Adora just squeezes back and kisses at the corner of Catra’s left ear before leaning their heads back and answering in a light hearted whisper, “Of course.”
