The room was silent, save for the quiet drum of rain bouncing off the window, the distant ticking of a clock, and the odd crinkling whenever Klavier turned over a page of some report he was reading, most of which were scattered all over the end of the bed. Apollo had been drifting in and out of sleep for the past two hours, lulled into a sense of calm by the unusual tranquility of his apartment.
For once there were no immediate cases to see to, no magic shows to attend, and if any of his friends were getting into trouble at that very moment then they had yet to bother him with it.
So he dozed quietly at Klavier’s side, occasionally cracking an eye open if his boyfriend tutted at something, and offered some mumbled words of support whenever he felt Klavier tense up ever so slightly.
Domestic bliss, some might call it.
But Apollo couldn’t quite shake the anxiety fuelled disappointment in himself he’d been feeling ever since Klavier’s interview with some teen magazine that morning. He wasn’t quite sure where it had come from, but something about seeing Klavier dressed up to the nines so effortlessly and act as charming as ever was sending him spiralling.
Klavier was an expert at hiding his true emotions, but Apollo could still pick up on how his eyes glazed over slightly when he was asked a question he’d answered in hundreds of previous interviews, or the disinterested smile he plastered on every time he was introduced to some new influential personnel. It was as though he’d got it down to an exact science.
Charming greeting. Warm smile. If they were a woman then inevitably a hand kiss followed by a mildly flirtatious comment. Oodles of chivalry. And all of it was fake. A charade to get on people’s good sides.
Obviously Apollo understood why Klavier did it. Most of those people were part of business transactions, whether it be a meeting about partnering with a clothing brand, or promoting his next single. But it hurt no less when Klavier occasionally slipped up and treated Apollo with the same disinterested smiles and polite nods he’d seen directed at so many others.
How many times had Klavier acted like that towards him? How many times had Apollo not noticed it?
He sighed and rolled over, burying his face in Klavier’s stomach. God. He was just being stupid. If Klavier was bored by him then he’d know by now wouldn’t he? Wouldn’t he?
There was a rustle of paper above him and then a pair of arms were encircling his waist, pulling him up Klavier’s body so his head now rested on his shoulder.
“You okay, liebe?” Came a murmur near his ear. “You’ve been quiet for a while.”
Apollo opened his mouth, ready to go with his usual ‘I’m fine!’ spiel, but the words stuck in his throat. Instead he just shrugged minutely, and tucked his head under Klavier’s chin, desperate to avoid the situation. He didn’t want to have to voice his dumb insecurities. But Klavier wasn’t an idiot, so he shifted the pair of them further up the bed so that they were leaning against the headboard.
“Seriously schatz, is something going on? You know you can tell me anything, ja?”
Apollo nodded, swallowing tightly.
“Tell me, please?”
“You’ll…You’ll think it’s stupid.” Apollo finally muttered, fingers twisting in the duvet underneath them. Klavier’s eyes followed the movement and he frowned, gently covering Apollo’s hand with his own to lessen his fidgeting.
“If it’s upsetting you then it’s not stupid is it?”
He sighed, lifting an arm over his eyes so that he didn’t have to look at Klavier whilst he was being all vulnerable with his feelings. Apollo may be the one with the lie detecting bracelet and a gift for perception, but Klavier’s eyes could burn holes in him just with one scrutinising glance.
“I just keep thinking about this morning. That’s all.”
Man, he could practically hear Klavier furrowing his eyebrows at that.
“What about this morning? Did someone say something to you while I was being interviewed?”
Apollo flapped a placating hand in his direction. “No nothing like that. It’s just how you act with those kinds of people. Like, you become distant. Bored. I don’t know, you just get all closed off the second they approach you.”
Klavier plucked Apollo’s hand away from his face and gazed down at him in what Apollo could only assume was confused concern. He probably wasn’t explaining this very well.
“A-and-“ his throat tightened. “-sometimes I think you act that way with me.”
Klavier froze.
“I know, I know. It’s dumb. It’s just…you always seem so collected. Infallible.” Apollo raked a nervous hand through his hair. “It’s hard to know how you really feel about me sometimes. I’m a bumbling mess in court, I trip over my words constantly and you’re the exact opposite. So yeah.” He went back to fidgeting with the duvet. “That’s the situation.”
“Apollo.”
He breathed out shakily and glanced up. “Yeah?”
“Kiss me.”
“Wha-“
“I want to show you something.”
Apollo frowned but moved forwards after a moment of hesitation, gently cupping Klavier’s chin with his thumb and forefinger, and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. They lingered for a moment before he pulled away, scooting back to his side of the bed. Klavier opened his eyes and smiled softly at him.
“Here. Give me your hand, schatz.”
Klavier wrapped a warm palm around Apollo’s hand and guided it towards his chest, just below the Gavineers necklace and over his heart.
“Do you feel that?”
Apollo nodded mutely, rendered completely speechless by the elevated thudding under his palm. He traced a finger along Klavier’s collarbone and let out a startled gasp when the heartbeat got slightly quicker still.
“This is what you do to me, Apollo.” Klavier murmured, voice quiet and calming. “This is how I react after just one kiss.” Their eyes met and he smiled gently, carding a hand through the hair at the nape of Apollo’s neck. “I’m only sorry that I haven’t been showing you properly.”
“Klavier.” Apollo breathed out, smoothing out the shirt beneath his fingertips and trailing them up the prosecutor’s neck. “I love you. So much. God I’m such an idiot.”
Klavier chuckled softly and pressed a loving kiss to Apollo’s forehead.
“Not an idiot. Just wonderfully oblivious. Ich liebe dich auch .”
Then he pulled Apollo into his side and reached for the reports he’d been organising earlier, running a comforting thumb along Apollo’s shoulder whilst he flicked back through them.
“Now that we’ve sorted that out, how would you like to help me get through the rest of these?”
Apollo grinned. “I’d like nothing more.”
