Work Text:
River Song isn’t the most conventional girlfriend. She’s wild, she disappears for long stretches of time, she’s almost always armed, and she can take down multiple adult men in one go with a bobby pin, hair spray, and lighter. You’ve seen her do it.
But she loves you, and you know this.
Which is why you’re unsurprised to see her climbing into your flat via fire escape. “Hello River.” you say, setting down your book. You don’t know what’s going to happen with River, but you can almost guarantee that it isn’t going to involve books and sitting quietly.
Of course, River makes proving you wrong into a sport.
“Do you like coffee?” she asks, already dragging you to a nearby coffee shop.
You settle down at a small wire table made for two, outside of the shop. The air is crisp, but it’s not cold just yet. You blow on the hot drink you ordered, looking up at River.
“This is out of character.” you say, and she beams.
“Would you rather be almost killed by Sontarans?” and well… no. You wouldn’t. You relay this to her, and she grins. “It’s still an adventure!” she drinks her coffee, not even wincing at the scalding material going down her throat. “Plus, I’m meeting a buyer here later.” she said, lifting up a briefcase you could have sworn she didn’t have before. “Giving him this.” she winks, and you smile. That’s the River you know.
The sky looks beautiful as the sun fades over the horizon, and you look up. She smiles, following your gaze. When you look back towards her she moves in, pressing a kiss to your cheek.
“You’re amazing.” you remind her, and she grins wider, reaching across the table to grasp your hand, pulling it towards her.
“So are you.” she says, and you lean across the table to kiss her properly this time, keeping a hold on your drink so it doesn’t spill. She tastes like coffee.
“I hope that was your regular lipstick.” you say as you pull apart, and she laughs.
“For you? Always.”
