Work Text:

Red.

"Objection!"

It cuts through all of the commotion in the classroom; even Phoenix has to look up from where he's cowering in his own seat. He never imagined that school could be a place where he was terrified of simply existing, but there's a first for everything.

But everything stops.

In the corner, the kid has stood up, pointing his finger out at some unknown object in the distance. He looks fed up with everything and everyone. His red suit stands out starkly, always has, but now that Phoenix is really, truly looking at him...

And the kid... defends him?

Orange.

Larry leans forward. "So, am I going to be your best man, or what?"

Phoenix lets out a ragged sigh. "Larry, c'mon, I haven't-- we haven't even talked about anything yet. For all I know, he could still totally be against the idea of marriage."

Larry pouts, sitting down. His orange outfit sticks out like a sore thumb, but it's always been there. They've been friends for what feels like forever. Sure, he plays the part of annoyed friends, but deep down--

"Hey, I'll consider it, if that ever comes up."

"Alright!" Larry lets out a whoop. "Now time to convince Edgey that you should get married!"

"What?" Phoenix exclaims, alarmed, but that orange jacket is already out the door, flowing behind Larry as he runs off. "Larry, don't you dare ask him that! Larry! Get back here!"

"He's gone," Trucy says from the couch, looking at her phone. "You'll never catch up to him. Now that's what I call an L moment."

"Please don't call it that."

Yellow.

The defense badge in his hands, it's...

"I'm starting to rethink this," Phoenix admits, even as the badge is plopped into his hands. "Miles, I don't know if I should be--"

"If a self-depreciating thing comes out of that mouth, I'm not going to kiss you for a month," Miles interrupts him, hand on his hip.

Phoenix sighs, his shoulders drooping. "Is this really right? Am I even cut out for this?"

"You passed the bar exam."

"Well--"

"Twice," Miles continues, crossing his shoulders. "If it's a matter of knowing the material, then no, you're completely eligible."

"But... is it worth it?"

Miles pauses.

"Is it worth it? I worked so hard to redeem myself, but here I am, not sure if I want to do this. Or if I should."

"You..." Miles shakes his head, picking up the yellow defense attorney badge again. It shines in the light. Shines just like the man standing right in front of him. "You deserve this second chance in the legal system. The legal system does not deserve you. I know your value, Phoenix Wright, and your value as a human being is something that that corrupt legal system does not understand. I'm working to do what's right. I'd be honored to have you at my side, because I value your work and your opinion, and... well, you."

Green.

The magatama.

"Here's your green rock again," Miles says plainly, dropping it into his hand.

"It's not a rock. It's a magatama."

Miles ignores him. "I took down notes in the case file. Look over them."

"Hey," Phoenix says, even though Miles has already turned around to leave. Miles acknowledges him with a simple glance over his shoulder. "Thanks for doing this. I know it was sudden to drop that on you."

"If I might ask..." Miles asks, quietly. "Why me?"

"Because I trust you." Phoenix grins widely. "I knew I could rely on you. That's how much value and faith I put into our friendship, Miles."

Miles just stands there, stunned.

Blue.

"Does this looks alright?" Phoenix turns around, his dark blue jacket swinging around as well. "I'm a little nervous, but then again, it is my first case. My second first case? Either way, it's been a while, and I want to look my best, so..."

Miles shakes his head. "You look fine, Wright."

"Are you sure?" Phoenix looks down at his suit. It's so blue. Has it always been this blue?

"More than sure," Miles mumbles, reaching out and patting down at the shoulders. He considers leaning in for a brief second, makes eye contact with Phoenix, decides it's a bad idea, and looks away. "It'll be fine. I have no doubts in your abilities."

Phoenix leans in for a small peck on the lips.

While Miles is frozen solid where he stands, Phoenix perks up, looking around. "Trial's starting soon. I'll see you after, alright, Miles?" And he departs into the courtroom.

Damn that man.

Purple.

"Meet again, huh?" Maya tilts her head. "You know Edgeworth?"

Phoenix gives her a small smile. "I knew Edgeworth."

"You knew him?" Maya hums, her purple robe swishing around. "That's interesting. I thought you were just rivals?"

"We're--" Phoenix sighs. "We're something, alright."

Maya laughs. "Hey, if that's how it is. Just remember to invite me to the wedding," Maya jokes as Phoenix stutters out objections and excuses.
