Dark Humour

Summary:

Sirius has bad jokes... really, really bad jokes and Remus is so done.

“Okay, well… How does Moses-”
“Make his coffee?” Remus finished with a raised eyebrow and a bored look on his face. “Hebrews it, right?”

Notes:

This is a stand-alone work. There are other stories in the universe, but you do not need to read other stories to understand this one.

I do not own any Harry Potter characters, all characters belong to JK Rowling.

Work Text:

“Moons?”

“Yes, Sirius?” Remus called back in a slightly annoyed tone.

It wasn’t that the two best friends were fighting, that wasn’t the reason that Remus was annoyed. It wasn’t that they had spent too much time together after being stuck in Remus’ apartment for three days because of a snow storm, It wasn’t because they had no more ice cream left, it wasn’t even because Sirius and Remus couldn’t agree on a movie to watch. No, it was much, much worse.

“I’ve got another joke,” Sirius called back from the kitchen. “So-”

“I will throw this book at your head,” Remus threatened from the couch with a deadly glare, watching Sirius frown as he leaned against the wall.

“But Moons...”

“All of your jokes are awful,” Remus stated emotionlessly, staring blankly at the other man.

“No!”

“They are also predictable.”

“They are not!” Sirius exclaimed in offence. “Why should you not iron a four-leaf clover? Because-”

“You shouldn’t press your luck?”

“Good guess,” Sirius mumbled from his spot near the wall. “Do you want to hear a construction joke-”

“You’re still working on it, I know.”

“Okay, well… How does Moses-”

“Make his coffee?” Remus finished with a raised eyebrow and a bored look on his face. “Hebrews it, right?”

“Just give me a moment,” Sirius whispers as he pulls out his phone to look up more jokes. “They can’t all be predictable!”

“Or,” Remus sighs, finally placing his book on the coffee table, “You could come sit down and we can watch a movie?”

“Not until I-”

“Prove your point,” Remus replied with an eye roll. “Yeah yeah, I know.”

A small smile fell on Remus’ face as he watched his best friend on the other side of the room. Sirius was now sitting on the ground as he leaned against the wall, scrolling through his phone and typing away. They have known each other for three years and it seemed that every time they hung out, Remus fell more and more in love with Sirius. Even the smallest of things, like the way Sirius would throw his head back in laughter or the way he would dramatically wink whenever giving one of his friends a compliment would make Remus fight the slight flutter in his chest. Sirius may have the stupidest and most annoying jokes, but Remus could almost never contain the smile that followed.

( Remus / Lily )

4:32 pm: Hey, Rem! How’s it going? I would apologize about you being stuck with Sirius for the past two days but I know better *winking face emoji*.

4:33 pm: You’re hilarious, Lily. So funny I forgot to laugh *rolling eye emoji*. But to answer your question, it’s going well! Is the Potter-Black household quieter now that Sirius is stuck over here?

4:34 pm: Idiot. It would be quieter if Sirius would reply to my husband’s texts! James is driving me up the wall! As much as I want you two to be stuck with each other, James has been a pain in the ass because he can’t bother his brother. Speaking of you two being stuck together…

4:35 pm: Lily… Don’t…

4:36 pm: Oh, come on!! Just admit your feelings to him! Get it over with so I don’t have to deal with the sexual tension anymore! I can sense it from here!

4:37 pm: Goodbye, Lily.

4:38 pm: You’re an idiot!

4:39 pm: But you love me?

4:40 pm: You already know the answer *rolling eye emoji*

4:41 pm: ?

4:42 pm: Of course I love you! You may be an idiot, but you're my idiotic brother. Now go snog Sirius or something. I don’t care how, but resolve the sexual tension. I don’t want to deal with this for another three years.

4:43 pm: … I love you too?

4:44 pm: <3.

“Okay!” Sirius exclaimed loudly as he jumped up onto his feet. “I’ve got one!”

“You sure, Pads?” Remus teased, the hint of annoyance being long gone. “If you need more time-”

“Moony? Shut up.”

“Shutting up,” Remus laughed. “Are you sure this is the one?”

“I would bet James’ life on it!”

“Good gosh… okay, hit me.”

“Are you sure? It’s a dark one,” Sirius cautioned, making Remus roll his eyes.

“All of my jokes are usually filled with dark humour. Go for it.”

“Alright,” Sirius whispers, taking a deep breath before slowly bringing his hand towards the wall and flicking the light switch. “Knock knock-”

“Turn the damn light back on, you idiot!”

“So… Was the last one predictable?”

“Only you, Sirius,” Remus laughed quietly, shaking his head in disbelief. “No, you don’t have to sacrifice Prongs.”

“I wouldn’t have sacrificed him,” Sirius objected as he pulled Remus closer under the blanket. “I would have… helped him… move on?...”

“Move on?” Remus repeated, tilting his head that was resting on Sirius’ shoulder to make eye contact. “Move on from what? The unbearable pain and dread of life itself? If that’s the case, could I move on?”

“You’re so morbid...”

“What can I say?” Remus shrugged with a small smirk. “I like dark humour.”

“Shut up and watch the damn movie,” Sirius retorted as he messed up Remus’ hair, earning him a laugh from his best friend.

“You started it!”

And I would start it again to see you laugh like that, Sirius thought to himself. I would do anything to make you laugh.

“By the way,” Remus continued, “what was the rest of your joke?”

“Uh… you know, I don’t really remember,” Sirius trailed off sheepishly, running his hand through his hair. “So this movie-”

“It was going to be stupid and predictable,” Remus interrupted with a raised eyebrow, “wasn’t it?”

“Knock knock?”

“Who’s there,” Remus sighed.

“Banana-”

“Oh, fuck no!” Remus exclaimed in horror. “You were not going to-”

“Orange you glad I didn’t say banana!”

“I hate you,” came the annoyed whisper.

“If you hated me, you wouldn’t be curled up into my side.”

“Padfoot?”

“Moons?”

“Shut up.”

“Shutting up,” Sirius laughed.
