Chapter Text

Simon’s writing was genius. Seeing the parallels between him and Grace yet seeing them deal with the same situation differently was extremely important for me. Seeing Grace grow and Simon stay static really dug the point that Simon was rejecting his redemption that was laid out for him.

Anyways I can focus on the comparisons and parallels forever so I’m just going to cut it down to being that short so I don’t get so carried away. Back to the main point now.

How deserving of death was Simon? Do you think he should have had another chance?

In my opinion I think Simon didn’t need another chance. He had plenty from what we saw in season 3 and how many more before that that the Apex seemed to ignore for their beliefs. He had bonded with Tuba, then got Tuba killed with his beliefs that Tuba wasn’t a real person and was in the way of his goal; getting Hazel to join the Apex and believe in their ways. He had rudely crushed denizens and their homes after bragging about how he wheeled Tuba to Grace. He had refused to listen to everyone else’s ideas if they went against his code of honor/what he lived by (the apex rules he made, assumably).

Simon had so many chances of the Train unconsciously trying to help him, especially after One-One was back in his position as conductor. So he took all of those chances and ignored them, he probably didn’t even realize these were things that could help him change for the better. And when he did know he refused his chance of change.

Simon was on the train because he lost a spelling bee (allegedly). That’s what I’m going off of for this analysis here. If he was on the train because of the spelling bee, it shows that he needed to learn to manage his feelings about being wrong. We see in season 3 that Simon had a hard time believing he was wrong, and when he thought he was wrong, he manipulated others' views (as well as his own) to prove himself as being right. He couldn’t take criticism when he was questioned on his methods. This behavior shows signs of narcissism/ narcissistic personality disorder (although he may have other mental disorders on top of that but who knows?).
His (assumed) narcissistic disorder was made worse by Grace, The Cat/Samantha, and The Train (although the train was mostly Amelia’s fault at the time.) The reason why is because Grace had fed him lies, though not on purpose, and never tried to prove his beliefs wrong(mostly because she didn’t really know she was letting him believe whatever was true to him), and never tried to correct him much at all, the Cat had seemingly abandoned him, didn’t correct his beliefs of this when it mattered to him (although that was mostly not her fault as she allegedly could not find him after that), and the Train didn’t help him deal with his issues at all, I would even go as far to say the Train (under Amelia’s control) had even enabled him(along with Grace and the Cat).

By the time Grace was on the way to redemption, Amelia told him the truth about numbers, and the Cat tried to explain her side of what happened; it was too late for Simon to change his views. He was so deep in what he believed and he couldn’t fathom the idea of him not being right. This is most likely part of his (assumed) narcissistic personality disorder but it can be even deeper than that and it most likely is. His environment on the Train wasn’t really healthy for him to try to grow better in.

As for his abandonment issues, it is a theory that Simon had someone (more than likely a parent) pass away and he took this as a parent “abandoning him” due to his lack of understanding about death. Evidence for this is usually pointed at his extended knowledge about funerals after Hazel wanted to have a funeral for Tuba as well as the talk about the neighbors casseroles conversation. While this could very well be true it’s not what I’m going to be focusing on for this analysis.

I am going to consider the evidence for the theory as Simon being a curious person who can’t stand not knowing everything about something ( I am one of these people myself and yes it applies because was/am often curious about uncomfortable things such as funerals even before I actually needed to use this knowledge. I assume other people can have the same mentality I have about needing to know about things I don’t know about already.) and Simon having a moment of weakness because of something other than dead parents. I don’t have a solid enough explanation for the casserole scene yet but I’m sure someone else can probably think of something better than I could have.

I can also (not so solidly) debunk the theory about dead parents being the cause of his abandonment issues from what we learn about the numbers in season 2 and 4. In season 4 we see Min Gi and Ryan’s combined problem was their feeling of abandonment from each other. While they had other issues at the same time, I can even point to Tulip from season 1 having a similar issue of believing her parents stopped caring about her(abandonment was technically a problem in her circumstance). Abandonment takes time to get over, which is why these people had to deal with abandonment had fluctuating numbers as well as larger numbers( which were over 100). They needed to relearn the same lesson as well as different ones to finally accept their trauma. Amelia presumably also had a larger number at the start of the train because of her refusal to accept Alrick’s death. We can also see that people with numbers lower than 100 hadn’t had issues quite as big as that. We see Jesse’s number was around 30 because he needed to learn to stick up for himself and let go of peer pressure to do what everyone else wanted, but not what he wanted. He didn’t really need to repeat the same thing over again to learn. Logically Simon had one problem when he first entered the train, he couldn’t accept he can be wrong too sometimes. It’s why his number wasn’t over 100. If I take the amounts logically and make an estimated number for the death of someone important, abandonment issues, and his refusal to be wrong I would probably put it at around 150. He would need to learn trust, acceptance, and how to take criticism in a healthy manner. This is going to take a while and his number would probably fluctuate like Tulip, Ryan, and Min-Gi. They all had to learn acceptance and that took a while longer than it did for Jesse because of their need to learn the same lessons over and over again. Simon would probably take a long while as well because of his refusal to accept he was wrong about anything (which would conflict with him accepting he wasn’t purposely abandoned) . Simon was also a kid at the time, about 10-11 or so, At least that's my (not so solid) theory on Simon’s original number. The reason why Grace probably didn’t start with a super huge number despite her trauma would probably be because she only needed to learn one or 2 moderate sized things at the start of the train.

I got off topic but here’s that (very unsolid) theory if you want it.

The cause of Simon’s abandonment issues was probably triggered by the Cat. He needed her to guide him in his time of desperate need and she seemingly left him on his own while he was confused and didn’t know how to care for himself. He probably took this as abandonment; he needed her, she left without a care to take care of herself(according to Simon).

They were slowly developing by getting stranded on the Train as a child with no one he recognized around and they had fully taken over his mentality after the Cat. He left it festering which led to his issues. His abandonment was left unaddressed for years most likely.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way it’s wrap up time. I’m going to take all I’ve said and put it in a way that explains why Simon would have never changed (even though he was redeemable).

Honestly I’ve spent a bit too many words talking about my number theory because of the dead parent thing that I don’t have a stable enough mentality to address in a way that does justice to the theory. It could very well be plausible but I’m not going to use it for this speculation/ analysis.

Basically Simon had chances to change. While he had left his issues to fester under the skin while he created more challenges for himself because no one knew how the train worked and no one bothered telling them the way it did work ( this was mostly because of Amelia’s control on the train which happened soon after they boarded the train), he had chances after the train started working the way it was supposed to because One-One was in control again. He had bonded with Tuba then betrayed her, he had a chance to try to change his views on denizens because of Hazel and then he tried to kill/ get rid of her just because she was technically a denizen, even after he had a pretty solid bond with her about the Apex.

He manipulated Grace after she was learning to grow, turned all of the Apex against her because she learned to care about denizens, and tried to kill her multiple times even after she tried to give him a helping hand towards redemption.

Simon had been redeemable but he chose not to be. At the end of the season it was too late for him. As One-One said in season 4, you're stuck on the Train until you get your number down, if you don’t get your number down then you’ll die there.

Simon had gone too far, not necessarily because of his actions, but because he showed One-One and the Train that he wasn’t going to change. He had been proven wrong time and time again, he had been given chances time and time again and he refused them.

You can’t change unless you adapt and accept.

Simon wasn’t going to change because he couldn’t adapt when he needed to and he didn’t accept when he could’ve because he didn’t want to.

(These types of people do exist and I have met these types of people, the people who give up change because they don’t want to because they feel they are always right)

Simon was never irredeemable because of his actions or his number. He was irredeemable because he didn’t want to be redeemed. He wasn’t going to change so the train could no longer help him and the train couldn’t let him off because he didn’t change so he had been left for dead instead.

If the train left him to live he would have probably been in an (almost) unending cycle of him learning and refusing redemption all over again. Then Grace would have left because her path to redemption would have come to an end pretty soon at the rate she was growing. The Apex kids with the smallest numbers would’ve been let off the train in a week or two if they learned to grow like the others did.

Because people were getting off the train Simon’s abandonment issues wouldn’t get better either.

In conclusion Simon had issues, he could’ve been redeemed if he wanted to be, and Simon is a beautifully written character.

Lake has a slight fear of reflective surfaces for a little while after they got off the train even though they know the Mirror Patrol can’t reach him
If it wasn’t obvious I headcanon they are a trans masc who uses he/they pronouns
Because of self projection and canon evidence I headcanon Lake really doesn’t like being good at things Tulip was good at (like coding)
Lake really likes sports now that he can do it for fun
Lake has a crush on Jesse
Jesse and him go on cute dates even when it doesn't make sense for them to do it
Like skateboard dates even though they don’t know how to skateboard
Lake gets along great with Nate and teaches him about forming his own identity while Jesse teaches him to stand up for what he wants
Lake really likes hanging out in the lake by Jesse’s house even though they can’t swim
They can't really rust like regular metal either
Yes Lake eventually learns to skateboard let me have this
Lake lives with Jesse and his parents and brother
Lake eventually goes to visit Tulip and they bond
Lake’s body can age like regular humans because of the metal body
This means lake will still look 13-14 despite being like 20
This also means Lake won’t die until long after Jesse and Tulip do
Lake goes to school with Jesse
Also Lake probably gets harassed because of their metal body
Does he need to use the bathroom? Not really since they don’t really need to eat or drink
After Jesse and Lake finish high school and have a stable life they adopt kids
Lake is a good parental figure (and often uses Tulip’s experience with parents to help even if he doesn’t like it very much)

I feel like Simon really likes math
He hates English though
He has Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Simon had a building kit when he was at home before the train
He really likes those army figurine toys
He was actually kind of interested in the buildings of the turtle college car but he’d never admit it
He absolutely had a big fat crush on Grace (this is kinda canon ig)
When he and Grace were alone before they met Hazel he was going to tell her he had a crush on her
He won’t admit it but some of the denizens make him uncomfortable because of his experience with the ghom
If he had chosen to go on the path of redemption he and Grace probably would’ve been a couple
They also would’ve unofficially considered Hazel their child
Simon has a one track mind
He has insecurity issues
He is extremely touched starved (so is like most of the cast-)
He and Grace used to hug each other while they slept to make sure she wouldn’t leave him
If he and Grace were alone on the Ballroom car he would’ve absolutely tried to confess to her in the most cliche way
Despite his hate for reading he really likes to read romance novels and pretend it’s him and Grace
Simon has anger issues
If he and Grace left the train together they would’ve gone on cliche dates to the park and such
Because of Samantha The Cat abandoning him he started to hate cats
He originally loved cats
He and Amelia could’ve had a heart to heart about their large numbers together if Simon had been redeemed
Simon secretly thinks Amelia is real cool because of her high number despite him thinking she’s trying to trick him
Simon is actually really good at singing
He used to sing while Grace would dance to it
If he and Grace had gotten off the train and became a couple they would have 2 kids
If one child happened to be a blond girl they would name her Hazel
Simon was on the verge of a breakdown before his death because he almost killed the person who took care of him on the Train, the person he loved, Grace Monroe
In the beginning of Grace’s redemption when she became weary of him he was genuinely confused on why what he was doing was wrong
He doesn’t know how to empathize or sympathize with others so it made connecting with other passengers and Apex kids hard

She had a small crush on Simon before the events of season 3
She considered Hazel an adopted daughter
Amelia let’s Grace see Hazel one more time after she leaves the train

She was inspired by Simon’s figures and ability to make visual versions of the world in his head
She actually meets Tulip outside the train and thought she was familiar
She does daycare work as her day job outside of art
If she confessed before Simon did it would’ve been at the Ballroom Car
She thought about kissing Simon in that car also
If she and Simon got off the train together they would’ve done mixed media performances with art and dance
She bonds with Amelia who also lost a loved one before
If she and Simon had confessed before the start of season 3 she probably would’ve been more hesitant to her redemption
If she and Simon got off the train together she would’ve proposed to him
Her and Simon would’ve had a small wedding in an abandoned park with a forest (Yeah idk it just feels right to me)
She still cries about losing Simon after she get off the train because she with him for so long on the Train

Chapter Text

First things first Tulip and Lake are siblings who go to group therapy at their parents insistence

Simon and Grace are childhood friends after they met outside the office at school
They both happen to go to the same group therapy but it was a coincidence
They are absolutely delinquents (with an unofficial gang probably. They don’t commit big crimes, mostly vandalism and petty theft.)

Jesse goes to group therapy after an accident with his brother
He and Lake became friends before this because they were following the same deer after camping in the forest

Hazel is the youngest member of the group therapy session
She often tries to talk about how cool her adoptive mom is so she doesn’t have to acknowledge her issues
Tuba is her adoptive mom

Amelia is the oldest member as well as oldest person in the fic
She is seen as the parental figure to the group and all the members look up to her
Hazel is especially fond of her because she was like the mom she never got to experience

Ryan and Min-Gi decide to go to therapy together to work out their relationship
Ryan also gets his ADHD addressed
Min-Gi also gets his Anxiety Disorder addressed
Kez is their friend
Kez also goes to therapy with them for her guilt about Morgan and to learn how to cope in a healthy way

One- One is a therapy prodigy
One-One suffers from Psychosomatic Disorder as a call back to that one time he said it in the crystal car in season 1
One-One could also have Borderline Personality Disorder or some other disorder to include bot Glad-One and Sad-One

Pretty much all the denizens are non-existent except One-One, Kez, and Tuba. ( Maybe the Cat would show up idk. She could be Simon’s mom who left him or something.)

The ages of all the cast in this Au are:

Hazel: 11
Tulip and Lake: 14
Jesse: 15
Grace and Simon: 17
Kez, Ryan, and Min- Gi: 19
Tuba: 23
One-One: Young but not too young. 25-35 most likely.
Amelia: 62

Basically in this Au the main cast bond and learn to work though their issues with the help of the peers around them.

Tulip would have to work through her trauma about her parent’s divorce.

Lake would have to work through their abandonment issues as well as them exploring their own identity.

Jesse would have to address his codependency and need for the approval of others. He also needs to work through his guilt about accidentally hurting his brother.

Grace needs to work through her trauma because of neglect and also her using committing crime to get her parents to acknowledge her.

Simon needs to work out his abandonment issues as well as learn to cope with his Narcissistic Personality Disorder and the side effects of unhealthy behaviors because of it. ( He can be redeemable or not.)

Hazel needs to work through her abandonment and her unhealthy attachment to Tuba as a way to try to stop Tuba from abandonment ( codependency)

Amelia needs to learn to cope with her husband’s death after attaching to objects that remind her of him. ( She could have a hoarding disorder)

Ryan needs to work though his abandonment issues along with his ADHD and inability to express himself/his issues because of neglect

Min-Gi needs to work on coping with his anxiety as well as his abandonment issues along with his gifted kid syndrome that affects him in his day to day life.

Kez needs to address her guilt about encouraging Morgan’s friend to leave and hurting Morgan even though she was trying to be a good friend. She also needs to address her need for attention that led to negative behaviors so she could be noticed.

Each chapter could be written from a different character's perspective like how Infinity Train focuses on different characters each season.

If you write this make sure to do research so you can have a better engaging fic and so you don’t spread misinformation.

This Au is basically Infinity Train with less trauma train magic and no time skips.

One-One is a king because I think that makes sense

Amelia is a mage who overthrew One-One and became queen

I want to think Tulip would be a mage or an alchemist.

Atticus is her loyal talking companion.

The Cat is a merchant with a cat motif.

Lake is absolutely a knight. I don’t make the rules.

Jesse is an archer or another knight.

Alan Dracula is their deer that they found in the forest that was cursed with wild magic.

Grace is a rogue.

Simon is also a rogue.

Grace and Simon lead a guild where they teach people to be rogues like them.

Hazel is technically a princess because of Amelia but by the time they learn that Amelia is already off the throne. Hazel is a shapeshifter who lives in the forest.

Tuba is a nice barbarian who takes care of Hazel.

Ryan is a bard and I don’t need to explain why.

Min- Gi is but a humble baker who eventually travels along with Ryan so they can play music together.

Kez is a thief. It makes sense.

I have no idea what the conflict would be but maybe it could be a scandal with the main characters learning Amelia is not actually supposed to be the Queen. Some of the characters could try to find and help One-One (the real ruler) and other characters can try to help Amelia keep the throne. The rest of the characters can be caught in the middle of the conflict. I don’t know why Amelia would want the throne though.

The train obviously wouldn’t exist in this au and there’s enough leeway that you could potential add and take away trauma. You can also add some aspects of Infinity Train too.

Chapter Text

Tulip goes to college and majors in computer science. After her college days she gets picked up by a famous gaming company for gaming concepts as well as coding. Tulip published her game she made in her teens.

Lake and Jesse go to college together, Lake takes Literature and Jesse takes some type of science. Jesse is also on the swim team. After they move into a small apartment together and work normal convenience store jobs while Lake does writing on the side. They end up adopting a kid and moving into a house.

Grace tries to pursue her dance training again, trying to become a professional ballerina. While she has a bit to catch up on, she’s a quick learner and quickly gets lead roles. She gets picked up by a dance company rather quickly after she graduates.

Ryan and Min-Gi form a band together. Min- Gi decides not to pursue college like his parents wanted him to. They aren’t the most popular band but they do gain quite a following.

Hazel is living out her best life on the train. She also helps One-One with Amelia because Amelia is getting old. I like to think she’s also a helper denizen.

Amelia is still working off her debt to One-One and the train but she’s definitely gotten somewhere now with her numbers visibly. She’s getting a bit older though so she can’t do what she’s used to.

WE ALL KNOW WHERE SIMON IS.

Obviously the denizens are still chilling on the train and helping passengers just as they always have.

I like to imagine everyone took the idea of the Infinity Train and incorporated it in their work. Tulip with a game, Lake with a book, Grace probably did a performance about it, and Ryan and Min-Gi had their Train To Nowhere song.

Tulip would look really cute with freckles
Tulip Probably made a game about her experience on the Train
Tulip really likes pop music but she would never admit it
Tulip went to coding camp the year after the train
Tulip picked big round glasses because of Mr. Peabody and Sherman

Tulip keeps up with video game magazines even though she usually reads the current news online

Tulip wanted a dog after Atticus but she felt like she would be replacing him
It also wouldn’t feel the same as actually having Atticus with her
Tulip is aroace, she doesn’t really feel romantic or sexual attraction
Tulip was a big fan of Harry Potter, she made her own OC and everything
Tulip has played all of the Pokemon games and I mean ALL of them
It took her like 9-10 years to finish them all
Tulip has a good relationship with Lake after Lake gets off the Train
Tulip would never admit it but she misses One-One, especially when he was asking if everything was his mom
Tulip often wonders about how Amelia is doing on the Train
Tulip actually doesn’t like science or math unless it has to do with coding
Tulip absolutely had those Break Open Geode kits that you get from Barnes N’ Noble
Tulip gets back on the train one more time
Tulip likes to sleep to those relaxing asmr videos.
Tulip absolutely majors in computer science
Tulip goes to dorm parties but she doesn't live in the dorms
Tulip and Mikayla(her friend from the beginning of the show that played her game) are still friends even after they finish college

Hazel’s favorite animal is gorillas because of Tuba
Hazel knows sign language because Tuba taught her
Hazel likes to sing
Hazel helps Amelia with detecting glitches the Train
If Hazel were to ever get off the Train she would like Glitch Techs
Her favorite character would be Miko/ME K.O
Hazel goes into her shell to sleep and to hide from things she doesn’t like
Hazel likes listening to music with a radio that Amelia has
When she first met One-One she called him a mood changing orb
She developed trust issues after the situation with Grace and Simon
She got to see Grace one more time where Grace cried and apologized to her
As much as she hates Simon she thought he was really smart
Hazel dances around when she listens to music
One-One and Hazel bond and become friends
Hazel works on the train after Amelia passes on (she either dies on the train or she finally earns freedom)
Hazel used to fiddle around by rolling on her shell because she could get up by herself
Hazel dislikes eggs because it’s one of the only things Amelia and her had to eat
Amelia and One-One helped Hazel get her number glowing so she could become a passenger
If Hazel were to ever leave the train she would want to dance like Grace
As much as she wanted to hate Grace because she betrayed her, she really cared about what happened to her after she left
Grace was the one who got her into dancing after the Ballroom Car

I think about Grace a lot because I love her, but also I relate to her situation so much.

We see Grace’s memories in the later episodes of season 3 that she went through neglect and we also see how she had a lot of expectations on her because her parents were rich and important.

Her parents always wanted her to learn from the best and be the best. They had hired the best tutors and caregivers to teach and watch Grace. Grace is a very quick learner so she had become very skilled pretty quickly. I speculate this led to her having perfectionist tendencies which you can find throughout season 3.

Grace’s parents often left her by herself or left her to the care of other people. She wasn’t raised by anyone but herself and her tutors most likely. This probably led to Grace’s need to be the center of the attention, so she could prove to her parents (as well as everyone around her) that she was there and she was perfect, she is something to notice and care about.

Her parent’s put her in group class (I assume so she can compare herself to the others and become better than everyone). When she had a recital, which she found important to her, her parents didn’t show up. After this moment (which was very life changing for her) she was left alone again by her peers. They openly laughed when she had showed up, which was extremely angering and saddening for her. She had turned the group against each other in anger and most likely jealousy.

Because of this constant cycle of not being given the time of day by her parents and being left with caregivers it led her to commit crime (petty theft) to finally be given acknowledgement from her parents. They still barely gave her the time of day, which led to her getting on the Train.

When “the conductor” saved her on the Train it showed her that people were capable of caring about her, even if they were her parents. This led to her worshipping “ the conductor” very religiously.

When she saved Simon acknowledged her, and even commented that she was cool, she felt empowered. It lead her to manipulating the people around her so they would always think she was the best, they couldn’t think less of her.

She gathered the Apex so she could be leader, someone people looked up to, someone people noticed.

As for her character on the train, her trauma led to her becoming a leader, overconfident, manipulative, and an attention bringer.

In conclusion I love Grace Monroe and she's a complicated character. I relate to her so much omg.

One-One had a hard time trying to help the Apex(they really hated that the Apex were ruining their formula.)

Jesse doesn’t enjoy sports as much as everyone thinks he does
That being said he had a parkour phase
Jesse and his brother had a strained relationship before the train
I like to think about non-binary Jesse a lot (it doesn’t nessicarily make sense but still)
Jesse likes Barbie movies ( I really can’t explain this one)
Jesse used to think Lake was stuck up when they first met
Jesse really likes vampires
To add to that Jesse also likes bats
To be honest Jesse has a soft spot for animals
Jesse is the type of person to have had fish as a kid and then accidentally killed them
(But it’s fine he made a real nice funeral for them)
Jesse likes to sit on the roof of his house and look up at the sky at night
Jesse is roasting with his jacket but he won’t take it off
Jesse likes being chaotic in the forest with his friends
Despite being terrible with kids, Jesse actually likes them
Jesse and Lake probably get a dog together
Jesse first realized he liked Lake on the Toad Car
Jesse disliked at first One-One because he couldn’t get Lake off the train

Starting off with an obvious one Hazel’s would be shape shifting. I don’t think I need to explain that.

I feel like Tulip would have an intelligent based power. Like heightened intelligence or something. I just think that’s the kind of person Tulip is.

I want to say Atticus is being able to talk but I feel like that’s a cop-out. But like… it makes sense-

One-One can calculate almost any probability. That makes sense to me.

The Cat/Samantha has a power of persuasion because of her merchant/guide role?? I want to say she’s a guide but she’s not exactly a guide. I’m gonna keep it. Basically she has heightened suggestion that people fall prey to idk.

Lake is pretty obvious too. I’m counting their metal body as a power. Yes this is kind of a cop--out but it just makes sense. Maybe mirror manipulation if you really want me to pick another.

Jesse I want to give him enhanced stamina. I don’t know why but I’m doing it.

Alan Dracula has all the powers lol.

Grace can manipulate people but she’s not great at it.

Simon has a telekinetic power because of the later part of season 3 with Grace’s memories.

Tuba has enhanced vision because of that color changing car. I know that’s because Tuba was color-blind but I’m going with this.

Ryan has aura manipulation because that’s the kind of person Ryan seems like to me.

Min-Gi has either color manipulation or portal creation because the Gallery Car is pretty memorable to me most because of Min-Gi’s point of view.
Kez can fly. Well I guess it’s kinda similar to levitation. But that’s Kez power I am not picking another one.

Almost forgot my girl Amelia whoops. Her’s is something to do with creation because of all the things she made including but not limited to ghoms, cars, and people.
