Work Text:

The small weight in his pocket had been dragging Katsuki down the entire day. He was waiting for the perfect moment, though. An event like this cannot be rushed in the slightest!

So even if he had to wait until he and Deku finally had that perfect moment in the middle of a festival with all of their friends around them, Katsuki would do exactly that.

“Kacchan, look! There are lanterns!” Izuku ran to the stand that was selling the paper lanterns and thanked the vendor. “I want to make a wish with you, Kacchan.” He held the lantern close to his body. Katsuki opened his mouth to respond but was cut off by a loud squeal.

“They’re so pretty! We have to get one, Eijirou!” Mina yelled, pulling Kirishima behind her. Soon, all of their friends took notice of the stand and joined in buying a lantern to share.

Of course. Katsuki didn’t mind though. He expected this excitement to happen the moment Izuku pointed out the lanterns. Everything was still going well.

They all gathered in a clearing to send their lanterns up in the air where they would be less crowded by other people doing the same.

“Kacchan, do you have a wish in mind?” Izuku asked, lighting the lantern before looking back to Katsuki.

It was more of a guarantee but still. “Yeah. You?”

“Yep! Let’s lift it together, on three.” Izuku’s face cracked into an even wider smile as Katsuki’s hand slipped under his hand, holding the lantern in place. “Ready? One… two… three.” They slowly raised their hands, Izuku’s eyes wide as he watched the lantern float away from them, joining the few that had already been sent off.

As Izuku watched the sky, Katsuki fell to one knee, finally pulling the tiny box from his pocket and opened it.

Whatever Izuku was going to say was cut off when he saw the ring cushioned by velvet. From where Katsuki was, the lanterns appeared to surround Izuku’s head. It was a beautiful sight to see.

This was the perfect moment.

Well, it would have been perfect had Izuku’s cheeks not puffed out with laughter. In an instant, Katsuki could feel his face burning with anger and embarrassment. “Don’t laugh at me, Deku!” he shouted as Izuku tried to gulp for air.

“No, never at you, Kacchan! I just—well, look!” Izuku shoved his hand into his back pocket and pulled out a box. A box that was identical to the one Katsuki had kept secret for weeks. A box that he had carried with him the entire day in search of the perfect moment.

Katsuki wasn’t sure what this moment could be classified as anymore.

“I guess my wish came true,” Izuku said in between giggles. And, as if to make this moment even odder, Mina squealed again. This time, she was accompanied by Ochako.

“Look at them! They proposed at the same time!”

“That’s so cute!”

Katsuki tried to will his face to cool down to no avail. The only thing that salvaged this moment from pure embarrassment is that Izuku said yes. And so did he.
