Chapter 1: the beginning of chaos

Chapter Text

Atsushi Nakajima is 18 years old and has never been to karaoke. That changes today. (Not the 18 part, the karaoke part.) Because thanks to an idea from Yosano, the Port Mafia and Armed Detective Agency was having a karaoke night. Looking back down at his phone screen, he sees a message pop up. Clicking on it and sliding his finger right on the message, it takes him to his and Chuuya’s private messages.

10:43 p.m.

(dazai-san’s secret lover??? and akutagawa-kun’s secret lover??? private messages)

dazai-san’s secret lover??? - i’m almost there. be ready, kid.

akutagawa-kun’s secret lover??? - kk thanks again

Seen. Atsushi snorts and slips his phone back into his pocket along with his hands. He, Kyoka, Dazai, and Yosano went shopping yesterday for the ADA, and they somehow convinced him to get new clothes. “C’monnn Atsushi-kun!!” Yosano begged, grabbing his shoulders and shaking him. “You could wear some new clothes! I’ll even pay!” Atsushi smiled a bit. His eyebrow twitched, moving her hands off his shoulders. “You don’t need to. I’m fine with these!” he offered. But somehow, he still got suckered into letting Yosano buy him new clothes.

He felt terrible that she had to, but she was more than happy. He had to admit they were nice and super comfortable. He never would’ve bought them himself, though. And he’s glad he didn’t because, man, these were not cheap.

Kyoka had left the dorm 10 minute ago since she was going in a separate car. He walked over towards the curb and sat down, waiting for Chuuya to come. He would be the last one being picked up since Akutagawa lived close, and Dazai walked over to his house. He sighed and brought his hands out of his pocket to rub them together for a little bit of warmth.

He saw a pair of headlights in the distance. He stood up, dusting off the excess debris on his pants. And checked his phone for the time 10:46 . The headlights were pulling up in the parking lot of the Agency’s dorms when Atsushi looked back up. A black Audi pulled up in front of him. One of the windows rolled down, showing a waving Dazai in the front passenger seat and Chuuya in the driver’s seat with the same hat he always wears.

“Get in, kid,” he said, pointing to the back and rolling up the window. He walked to the other side of the car and pulled the icy car door open, revealing a pouting Akutagawa glaring at the front seat with his arms crossed. “Don’t mind him!” Dazai laughed as Atsushi sat down in the heated car. “He’s in a mood!” Dazai explained.

“He’s not in a mood, idiot. You’ve been annoying him the whole ride. And my for that matter!” Chuuya snapped, hitting Dazai upside the head. Pulling out of the parking lot, Atsushi giggled a bit. Akutagawa turned his attention to him and glared at him. Atsushi put his hands up, surrendering to a battle that never started. Akutagawa turned back to the window and stared out.

“So what’s this karaoke place like?” Atsushi asked, breaking the silence. Since he didn’t exactly know what else people do at karaoke besides sing, so decided to look it up. Thanks to his research, he found out some places have karaoke nights where people can go up and sing, some have private rooms, some have it where it’s a karaoke bar, and adults can get wasted and sing their hearts out.

“I don’t exactly know since it was Yosano who booked it, but we get a private room and drinks,” Chuuya responded, stopping at a red light. “Do I have to sing?” Akutagawa asked, looking at Chuuya through the overhead mirror. Chuuya sighs and looks down. “I guess you don’t have to if you don’t want,” Chuuya responded.

“Aw, but what’s the point of going if you don’t sing!” Dazai exclaimed, throwing his hands up. Chuuya punched him in the head, stepping on the gas as the light turned from red to green.

“The point was getting him out of the house, so he spends time with people outside of missions!” Chuuya explained. Dazai started screaming at Chuuya about how much it hurt, and in return, Chuuya began screaming about how much of a baby he was being.

Atsushi’s giggling broke the screaming. Causing chuuya to stare at him through the overhead mirror, and Dazai looked back at him through the seat. “S-Sorry!” Atsushi said between giggles as Akutagawa glared at him. “It’s l-like he’s y-your child!” Atsushi said, still giggling as Chuuya faced the road with blush sprouting on his face.

Dazai raised an eyebrow and looked at Chuuya then back at Atsushi. “Me and chibi?!” he shouted. “Never!” he said, making Atsushi giggle some more. He looked over at Akutagawa, who was still glaring at him with a pout.

Atsushi raised his hand and placed it on his head. ‘Soft,’ Atsushi thought before patting it. “There there, Ryuu, don’t be upset,” Atsushi said with a smile. “I’m not a child.” Akutagawa deadpanned. “Then stop pouting like one!” Atsushi said, trying to keep himself from laughing. Atsushi moved his hand away from Akutagawa’s head, and Atsushi swore he saw his pout deepen.

After a few more turns and red lights, they made it to the karaoke place. It was in the middle of the city. Tall buildings surrounded it, and the building itself was tall. At least eight stories. Bright neon letters showed the name of the place ‘Yokohama Karaoke Bar.’ Original Atsushi thought, pulling out his phone from his pocket as Chuuya found a place to park.

Atsushi looked at the text from Yosano with their room number and party name. “Yosnao-san said it’s room 17 on floor five, and the party name is Ougai,” Atsushi said, confused on why the name was under the Port Mafia’s leader. ‘Probably to get better service or something,’ Atsushi’s brained supplied.

“Tell her we’ll be right up as soon as I find a damn place to park. YOU ASSHOLE, THAT WAS MY SPOT!” Atsushi got the message before Chuuya started yelling at cars. ‘I think his road rage is just as bad as Kunikida-sans.’ Atsushi shuttered. He sent a quick text to Yosano saying they’d be up in a minute. And Atsushi had half a mind to cover his ears from all of the mafioso’s yelling.

When they finally found a place to park, Atsushi undid his seat belt and hopped out, happy to eventually walk again. The others followed in pursuit a little after. The air was colder, and the wind was calmer here. “We shouldn’t have to walk too far,” Chuuya said, walking up to Atsushi, nodding ahead at the place.

“Thank you again for driving me!” Atsushi smiled at him. The man patted his head. “It’s fine, kid. At least you didn’t walk to my house and break in only to say you needed a ride.” He stated, glaring behind him, probably at Dazai, who only chuckled. Atsushi nodded, and Chuuya took his hand off his head and started walking forward.

Dazai skipped ahead to catch up with the redhead, and Atsushi looked back at Akutagawa, who started walking. Atsushi waited for Akutagawa to catch up and walked with him. “It’s cold out, huh?” Atsushi asked, trying his best to start a conversation. Akutagawa only nodded. Atsushi sighed. “So, how are you?” he asked, attempting to start a conversation again. Akutagawa only shrugged.

“Ryuu,” Atsushi said in a stern tone, looking at him. “Hm?” he asked, looking over at Atsushi. “Talk to me!” Atsushi begged. He put his head on the older man’s shoulder. Akutagawa sighed and kept walking. Atsushi dug his head in more until Akutagawa said something. “It’s so cold out.” Akutagawa coughed into his hand. Atsushi sighed, taking his head off the man’s shoulder, unwrapping his scarf from his neck, and putting it around Akutagawa’s. “There!” Atsushi said, looping their arms.

Akutagawa looked down and nodded. Atsushi looked up at the city night sky. It looked gorgeous. Stars were scattered all around, making the sky look like a black canvas with white paint splatters everywhere. City buildings framed it, making it look as if it was a painting in a frame. I,t was so beautiful Atsushi found it hard to describe it. The moon peeked behind a building, almost as if it was a shy kid at the mall hiding behind their mother.

Atsushi took a breath and looked around some more before glancing at Akutagawa. Atsushi would sometimes find himself staring at Akutagawa more. He tells himself it’s because he’s worried about him. But he knows it’s not the only reason. He just doesn’t know what the other reason is.

Atsushi could admit Akutagawa was pretty. He had fragile features, making him look like a porcelain doll he sees in shop windows sometimes. He had light hues of pink that dusted his nose and cheeks from the frigid air that surrounded them. And his hair. Oh, and his hair, it was soft like silk and black like the night’s, skies with white tips like snow. The hair perfectly framed his face making him look like an angel from hell. Atsushi supposes that he could be a demon.

His face was always in that pout. Making his cheeks puff out a bit. And his skin was so smooth; a baby couldn’t compare. But his eyes were Atsushi’s favorite. They said everything Akutagawa didn’t and how gorgeous they were. The grey hues mixed, making a color that mirrored the moon. Atsushi could look at them forever.

Akutagawa looked over at him and raised an eyebrow. Atsushi didn’t realize he was staring until Akutagawa bumped their shoulders. Atsushi’s cheeks grew hot, and his eyes widened. “S-Sorry!” he stuttered, unlooping their arms. “It’s fine,” Akutagawa responded, looking back down at Atsushi’s arm.

After a few more seconds of walking in awkward silence, they made it to the entrance of the karaoke place. Atsushi looked up to see that stupid sign. ‘Seriously, who names a place Yokohama Karaoke Bar’ Atsushi thought, raising an eyebrow.

Dazai went up to a lady at the front desk and told them the information. “Would you like someone to bring you up there or go by yourselves?” she asked, giving a smile and tilting her head. “We can go by ourselves,” Chuuya said, walking up next to Dazai. “Okay! Here’s a room key and a menu! Please enjoy!” she responded, handing them a folded menu and what looked like a hotel room key.

“Kids, let’s go!” Chuuya said, summoning Atsushi and Akutagawa to follow the two older men. Atsushi nodded at the lady at the front desk and said a quick thank you. At the same time, Akutagawa glared from beside him. Atsushi grabbed Akutagawa’s hand. “Hurry up there going to leave us, slowpoke!” Atsushi said, jogging a bit faster.

Chuuya had a hand extended in front of the elevator doors to stop them from closing and leaving the younger two. When finally in the elevator, Atsushi leaned against the wall, still holding Akutagawa’s hand in his own. Dazai coughed a bit, looking at them, and Chuuya raised an eyebrow, then looked at each other, then back at Akutagawa and Atsushi’s intertwined hands.

Then Dazai busted out into laughter while Chuuya put a hand to his mouth, trying not to giggle, and elbowed Dazai in the stomach. Only causing them to laugh more while Akutagawa and Atsushi looked at each other confused. “Is there something wrong?” Atsushi asked with concern laced in his tone.

Beep. The elevator continued moving up floors while Chuuya and Dazai settled down a bit. “J-Just l-look,” Dazai said, trying to breathe. Chuuya elbowed his stomach again, trying to calm him down. “Look at your h-hands.” Chuuya finished for him and wiped an imaginary tear from his eye. Atsushi was still concerned, but he looked down to see his hand intertwined with Akutagawa’s. Atsushi let out a little squeak before releasing his hand and covering his heating face.

“I’m so sorry!” Atsushi screamed, trying to apologize, while Akutagawa just stood there. “It’s fine, Ji. Just stop screaming,” Akutagawa said, looking away, trying to cover the blush that was spreading across his face. Ding.

The elevator stopped at what Atsushi hoped was floor five. The group got off and walked into the air-conditioned hallway “Jesus Christ, why add freezing air to already cold air?” Atsushi shuttered. He looked back down at his phone as he felt a warm presence drape across his shoulders. Atsushi looked up to see Akutagawa standing beside him, looking at the wall. A smile started to form on Atsushi’s face as he looked back down at his phone to check which room they are in again.

“It’s room 17!” He called out to Chuuya and Dazai, who started to walk in front of them. Dazai turned around and gave him a thumbs-up as the older two continued to step forward. Atsushi looked over at Akutagawa. “Thanks,” He smiled. “It’s fine. Let’s get going now.” He said, walking forward, and Atsushi followed.
