Work Text:
It was hot. Everything was hot and gross and hot. It was hot inside. It was hot outside. It was hot everywhere.
"Saying it that many times will only make it worse" Haiji said as he sighed loudly. Kakeru turned his head to look at him, not having realized he'd been complaining out loud.
They were both laying on the floor in Haiji's room. Had been laying there for about half of the day as they stared at the ceiling. The others were god knows where, they'd left after they took all the ice cream without asking, and Haiji and Kakeru'd felt that the only correct response to having no ice cream at home was to dramatically lie on the ground. So that was what they were doing.
Kakeru wiped some sweat off his forehead as he moved around a bit to find a cooler piece of floor.
"What's the reason we're not going to buy new ice cream?" he asked as his head accidentally bumped against Haiji's. He abruptly stopped moving. Haiji hummed before he replied.
"Because if we die of a heat stroke it'll teach them a lesson."
Right. Perfect logic. Their deaths were a small price to pay if it meant the team would never take ice cream without asking again. Kakeru snorted as he went to take off his shirt, self consciousness be damned, it was simply too hot to wear any clothes. Haiji had his tank top rolled up to his nipples, so he obviously agreed.
"We could buy a small pool." Kakeru offered after he'd laid down again, his head next to Haiji's this time. The top of his head could touch Haiji's shoulder if he wanted, but Kakeru purposely avoided closing the distance.
They probably looked ridiculous right now. Two boys laying on the floor, one of them shirtless, the other almost shirtless, arms and legs spread out like starfish and their heads so close they could fit together like two puzzle pieces.
"If you can buy a pool without us having to move from this exact position, I would totally be on board."
Kakeru thought about it for a minute. He could order a pool online. Though that would still require them to actually fill the thing with water, making the whole no moving thing incredibly difficult.
"Not an option, huh? When did you take off your shirt?" Haiji asked after another five minutes of silence. Kakeru felt his ears burn at the question.
"Just now. It was too hot." His voice was a bit shaky, but he was sure Haiji wouldn't pick up on it. Probably.
"My eyes were probably forced shut because of all the sweat. I didn't notice."
"I-I see."
And then the room went quiet again. Kakeru didn't mind the lack of talking, he wasn't great at it anyway. Just laying there was entertaining enough for him. Especially because Haiji was there with him. Kakeru widened his eyes a little at the thought and turned his head slightly to see if Haiji'd somehow read his mind, but found him still staring at the ceiling.
Good, Kakeru thought as he exhaled softly. Unfortunately, Haiji seemed to have heard him. He blinked his eyes back into focus and slowly turned his head.
Then his eyes met Kakeru's and he was so close. If Kakeru moved even the tiniest bit he could press his lips to Haiji's forehead.
Oh how he wanted to press his lips to Haiji's forehead, kiss the sweaty skin there until Haiji figured out Kakeru's feelings for him. (Not that his feelings could be explained in one kiss. Not by a long shot.)
Why Kakeru didn't turn away was beyond him. He could feel himself blush, could feel Haiji's eyes on him as he studied his face. But he stayed close, didn't move in hopes of... what exactly?
"Kakeru-" Haiji started, his voice soft, eyes only half opened and focused entirely on him. Kakeru's breath caught in his throat
At that moment Kakeru's phone vibrated.
Part of Kakeru wanted to ignore the sound and stay on the floor and listen to whatever Haiji was about to say. But another part of him, unfortunately the loudest part, was relieved to have been offered an escape.
Kakeru wasn't stupid. He'd noticed how he and Haiji were acting around each other. How they always seemed to be drawn to the other, how at every party the two always ended up sitting together, sharing stupid jokes and soft smiles. It was impossible to not notice it. Their secret glances, careful touches. As if they were in their own little world.
How neither of them had yelled 'I'm in love with you' at the top of their lungs yet was a mystery. It was obvious. So obvious.
That was what Kakeru thought anyway. And he was pretty sure he wasn't wrong.
And yet he reached for his phone.
"The others are near the river" Kakeru said as he glanced at Haiji. His heart skipped a beat as their eyes locked.
"Prince wants to know if we're coming too."
Haiji scrunched up his nose. Kakeru smiled as he sat up and started typing a reply.
"Tell them we're not coming" Haiji said as he crawled a bit closer.
"That's what I'm doing."
"I want to stay here," Kakeru glanced at Haiji again. Somehow he'd gotten even closer, their knees were almost touching. His heart was beating so fast, drumming in his ears as Haiji took his phone from him.
"With you."
Kakeru swallowed loudly. Haiji was leaning in. Kakeru knew what that meant, he'd read enough manga by now to know that much.
Or so he thought, but the next second he found Haiji's face pressed against his chest. The force of his weight made Kakeru fall back on his hands, causing Haiji to fall against him a second time. He could feel Haiji's nose against his stomach, his warm breath against his skin.
Kakeru was losing his mind.
Why did he take off his shirt? Curse the heat, curse the sun, curse everything.
Then Haiji lifted his head as quickly as he'd fallen down. He was still half hovering over Kakeru, a hand on either side of Kakeru's hips. His face'd turned completely red, from his cheeks to the tips of his ears, his tank top still rolled up ridiculously high.
Kakeru was pretty sure he was completely flushed himself too. Would Haiji try to kiss him again? Was that even a kiss attempt? Had he read the signs wrong? Maybe what they'd been doing for the past couple of weeks wasn't flirting at all, maybe Haiji was like that with everyone. No, he wasn't, right? Should he just laugh it off? Move to the other side of the country? How would he pay the movers though-
"Kakeru, stop" Haiji said all of a sudden. Kakeru immediately locked eyes with him as he balled his hands into fists on the floor.
"I can literally see all the thoughts that are going through your mind."
Kakeru averted his eyes as Haiji moved a little closer. "My hand was too sweaty and I slipped," Kakeru glanced at him, "I'm supposed to be freaking out. I'm the one who just accidentally fell face down onto his crush's naked chest after a failed kiss attempt, not you."
Kakeru smiled softly at that.
"I'm freaking out a little though, if that makes you feel better."
"Y-you are?"
"Naturally," Haiji replied without missing a beat, "this wasn't exactly how I imagined our first kiss would go." He laughed softly and Kakeru couldn't help but chuckle too.
It wasn't exactly how he'd imagined their first kiss either. He'd pictured it countless times already: under a sky full of stars, both of them outside when the others were asleep. They would talk first, soft whispers to make sure no one heard them, and then they'd lock eyes and Haiji would slowly lean in.
Or when they were cooking together, Haiji in his apron with Kakeru helping him cut vegetables. Their hands would touch accidentally, causing Kakeru to drop his knife. Haiji would ask him if he'd hurt himself and after Kakeru told him he was fine, Haiji would take his hand and kiss his fingers.
Or after one of their morning runs, or after they went grocery shopping together, or even after they'd all crossed the Hakone Ekiden finish line. Kakeru'd imagined it all. (Though he usually got too embarrassed to actually picture the kiss...)
"Want me to show you?" Haiji asked all of sudden. Kakeru followed him with his eyes as Haiji moved to get up. He reached out and grabbed Haiji's wrist before he even realized what he was doing. Kakeru stared at his own hand as he spoke softly.
"Show me what?" Haiji sat back down, his sweaty leg pressed against Kakeru's.
"How I imagined our first kiss would go." His voice was low and close. A soft sound escaped Kakeru's throat before he could stop it. Haiji laughed softly as he placed a hand on Kakeru's cheek.
"That would require you to move though."
"You would be worth the sweat."
It was ridiculous how sexy Haiji made that sound.
Kakeru didn't want to move. He wanted to stay here, never leave this exact spot and sit on the floor in this too hot room with Haiji. Forever.
Now Kakeru was leaning in, nuzzling his forehead against Haiji's as he tried to ignore how sweaty their skin was. (It was so hot everywhere.)
"I think here is fine too, right?" Kakeru was perfectly aware of how desperate he sounded, but he honestly couldn't care less. Especially with the way Haiji was gently stroking his cheek. Haiji chuckled softly before he spoke.
"Here is fine too. Perfect even."
And then he pressed their lips together. One of Kakeru's hands moved to the back of Haiji's neck to pull him in closer. He could feel Haiji smile against his lips and Kakeru couldn't help but copy him. His other hand ended up on Haiji's stomach, where he splayed his fingers over the warm skin. Haiji licked Kakeru's lips and he moaned softly as Haiji pushed his tongue against Kakeru's.
Then they heard the front door close with a loud bang.
"We brought the ice cream like you told us to!" Someone yelled.
Haiji pressed even closer as he deepened the kiss, licking and sucking Kakeru's tongue and lips until he started drooling a little. Kakeru groaned as Haiji pushed him to lie back down, started kissing his neck and biting his ear.
"Did you tell them to buy new ice cream for me?" Haiji asked as he sucked Kakeru's earlobe between his teeth.
"Y-yeah." Oh, this was not what his voice usually sounded like.
Haiji hummed at that. Kakeru really wished he hadn't told the others to buy ice cream to beg for Haiji's forgiveness, but there was nothing he could do about that anymore. If only he could turn back time.
He pulled Haiji's face back to his to press one last quick kiss to his lips and then someone entered the room.
And that someone was the whole team. Haiji and Kakeru both stood up as all the others got on one knee, all of them holding a popsicle in their hands.
"We hereby ask of you to forgive us for our heinous crimes," Yuki started, "we hope these gifts will satisfy your needs and will leave us with no debts left to be paid."
Haiji crossed his arms as the others slowly raised their heads. Kakeru was trying not to laugh but it was becoming increasingly difficult. Luckily, Haiji went to grab one of the popsicles after a few seconds of silence. Kakeru smiled and did the same.
"You could've just come to us when we invited-" Yuki elbowed Joji in the ribs before he could finish his sentence. Haiji raised an eyebrow.
"I was busy." Kakeru almost choked on his own spit at Haiji's words. All faces turned to him.
Then they all grinned.
"Is that so? Kakeru, can you confirm Haiji's statement?" Yuki asked with a knowing smirk.
Kakeru's face turned bright red within two seconds.
"Let's go eat these outside. Maybe we can set up a small pool" Haiji said as he licked his popsicle. Kakeru didn't realize he was staring at him until he heard the others snicker.
Shindo was the first to agree, probably to help poor Kakeru out. He dragged the others away to the yard. Then he came back on his own, whispered a soft I'll tell them to shut up and leave you alone and then he was gone too. Haiji chuckled as he bit a big chunk of his popsicle.
Kakeru's face was still a little red, but he started to calm down now that they were alone again.
"I thought setting up a pool was too much work in this heat" he said as he awkwardly scratched his neck. Haiji grinned.
"They're doing all the work. We'll join them once they're done."
Kakeru sighed. Of course he wasn't entirely over the whole ice cream debacle yet.
"Until then," Haiji stepped closer as he threw his popsicle stick to the other side of the room. Kakeru still hadn't finished his, but he didn't stop Haiji when he closed the distance between them.
"we can work up some sweat here."
