It's been a year since Prince Langa smiled. The queen offers a reward to anyone who can fix that. Reki would give it a try, but he's pretty sure being the one who broke the prince's heart disqualifies him.
“You’ve been quiet. Are you jealous?”
Reki lurches up. “Jealous of what?”
Miya’s brow angles impossibly higher. “Of all the attention the prince is getting?”
Right, of course. That’s what anyone would be jealous over. “I just don’t believe it. Prince Langa isn’t…” he waves one hand, frowning, “...like that.”
“Ha,” Miya crows. “Like you’d know.”
But he does. And Reki thinks: I could do it. I could make him smile. I’ve done it before.

“Oh my god,” Miya says as they round the bend and see what’s waiting for them.
The entire road up to the palace is a riot of color and movement. It might be a thousand people. More. Dread courses through him, but it’s all for Langa.
Miya closes his eyes. “Do it for them,” he whispers to himself. At least he’s doing it for something noble like horses instead of a backhanded way into a royal marriage.
