Though he was known for a great many different things, Kiawe was definitely not known for his patience.
Tapping his foot against the floor, he waited with his hands behind his back as Mimo wandered through the store aisles with her brows furrowed. Normally, he’d be all for allowing his baby sister to do as she pleased; he enjoyed doting on her when he could, but he’d just had a pretty long day of deliveries, and all he really wanted to do was head back home and take a quick shower.
“Big brother?” Mimo called, tapping one of her tiny fingers against her chin thoughtfully. “I think I want both of… these!” She pointed at two dolls that were displayed on the shelf before her.
Digging through his pockets, Kiawe knew that he really only had money enough for one of the dolls and maybe a few malasadas on the way home. “I don’t know if we can get both of those dolls today, Mimo. How about choosing whichever one you like better?”
Mimo looked quite distressed at that particular suggestion. “I can’t just choose one of the dolls, Kiawe! I like them both!”
Pursing his lips, Kiawe thought carefully. He needed to be smart about this so that he could get them both out of the store and back home in one piece. “Well… Why don’t you… let them have a battle to see who’s got the most raging passion and to decide who’s more worthy to stand at your side?” He balled his fists up in excitement.
“I don’t think so, big brother.” Mimo gave him a flat look. “I don’t know what to do!” She reached out a small hand toward each of the dolls.
“Well…” Kiawe tried again, patience wearing thin. “What color do you like better?”
Glancing back and forth between the two dolls, Mimo scrunched her nose up in thought. “I like both red and blue.”
This was going nowhere fast, and Kiawe was dying to head home. “I’ll tell you what, Mimo. If you pick one of the dolls now, you can come back and get the other one the next time Mom takes you to the store.”
That seemed to satisfy Mimo, and she took the doll dressed in red off the shelf. “Are you sure Mom will take me to the store to pick her up, Kiawe?” She slipped a hand through his, clinging tightly to her boxed toy.
Leading her to the front of the store, Kiawe nodded, “I think so.” As he bought the doll, he swung their joined hands between them. “Hey, how about we pick up some malasadas before Charizard flies us home?”
“Yes!” Mimo squealed in delight. “But we need to get one for my dolly too, okay? She loves malasadas.”
With a grin, Kiawe patted the top of her head as they headed straight for the malasada truck. “Sure, Mimo. And, hey, thanks for hanging out with me today.”
“You’re welcome, big brother!” Mimo beamed.
