Work Text:
The sun was setting as they headed home. The air had been warming up and Cas had been dying to take Jack to the beach for the first time. He might have only been a year old, but Cas insisted that it was of the utmost importance that Jack got to feel the sand between his toes and hear the waves crashing on the shore now that he was old enough to have some appreciation for it.
Dean couldn’t say no. Of course he couldn’t; he was incapable of denying Cas anything.
Now, here he sat with a sleeping infant in his wetsuit in the backseat and his angel (wearing the ugliest hawaiian shirt Dean had ever seen, might he add) in the passenger seat, a bucket hat in his lap with his sandals halfway off of his feet. Cas told him that he was merely resting his eyes, but Dean knew better. Cas was dozing after a day of chasing (well, speed walking really. Jack couldn't exactly run just yet) after an overly excited baby through the sea and the sand and honestly, he couldn’t blame him.
Things were pretty peaceful, the quiet snoring of his son and his angel being the only sound as he took them home to Sam and most likely, Rowena as well. Dean had learned to put up with her; Sam loved her and there was nothing he could do about it. She wasn’t going anywhere and he had come to accept it, maybe even enjoyed it a little since she was a good babysitter and Cas seemed to like her.
He looked briefly at his lover as he gave a particularly loud snore and could only grin to himself. Even with his mouth half open, a little drool on his chin, Dean could confidently say he had never seen anything more beautiful. Nothing was a more welcome sight than his angel, happy and at peace with the sun casting a warm glow over his features. Cas was completely ethereal anyway but this was a whole new level.
There were few things Dean was sure of; it was to be expected after a life as unstable as his. One thing he knew for certain, however, was that moments like these were worth more than anything money could buy, more than all of the stars in the sky. There was nothing that could compare to the warmth that times like these with Cas and Jack brought him, and he doubted anything could ever come close. After the things he had done, Dean had to wonder how he got so lucky. Did he even deserve it? Why him of all people? Why did he get to-
“Mm...Dean…” Cas began to stir. Dean turned his attention to his lover next to him.
“Yeah, angel?” Dean spoke, keeping his voice down so that he didn’t disturb Jack.
Castiel looked at him, eyes bleary with a sleepy smile on his face.
“I’m just making sure I’m not dreaming.” Castiel yawned, giving a little sniffle.
“Not a dream, sugar. S’all real.”
“I’m glad, Dean. I’m glad it’s real.”
Dean gave a soft hum, nodding slightly as a giddy little smile made its way onto his lips.
“Me too, angel. Me too.”
