The best birthday present

Summary:

I decided to give you a short story for Percy's birthday :)

Work Text:

It was late at night, on the 17th of August just a few hours away from Percy’s birthday. Annabeth was a few days away from her due date which wasn’t ideal at all, especially if we consider that it was during the hottest days of summer and their AC were broken. They put Charlie, Zoe, and Theo down to bed pretty easily as the heat knocked them out.

Annabeth woke up in the middle of the night. She felt a very strong kick from the baby. She had felt a similar feeling twice before when she gave birth to the twins and Theo. She tried to go back to sleep but she felt a second kick that was even worse than the first. Then she heard a small popping sound. She nudged Percy who was asleep. “Percy, I think my water broke.” She whispered to his ear.

“What?” Percy asked her still half-asleep.

“My water broke. The baby is coming. Get up. Now.” Annabeth said again.

“Oh my God. I’ll call my mum and get you at the hospital.” Percy got out of the bed and helped Annabeth get up. Sally came by the house 10 minutes later which allowed Percy and Annabeth to go.

Luckily, at 3 am the streets were empty. They had to stop at the red light. After almost 20 minutes they found a moment to catch a breath and relax after running around the house to get everything ready before they left. “Percy we still don’t have a name,” Annabeth said clutching her belly through the pain. For her past two times, she was pumped with Adrenaline which made her ignore the pain. But this time she was adrenaline free.

“What if we don’t decide on a name until he or she is born?” Percy proposed.

“That’s an idea. But you can’t trust me after giving birth, I’ll be oozy with the drugs.”

“Don’t worry. Breath through the pain.” Percy pressed the accelerator pedal as soon as the light turned green. “Let’s have a baby!”

“Our last baby. There is no way I am not doing this again.” Annabeth took a deep breath.

“You are the boss .” Percy agreed that 4 was the maximum amount of children the two of them could handle. “And we don’t need 5 kids.”

“Definitely not! I don’t know if I can do the 4th right now.”

A few hours later, Annabeth was in terrible pain and the baby didn’t seem to want to come out. “I really hate you right now.” Annabeth groaned through the pain.

“It’s okay. You can hate me as much as you want.” Percy said. Annabeth was squeezing his hand so hard that his hand got numb.

“Annabeth it’s the time for you to push. The baby is nearly out.” Her doctor said.

5 minutes later they heard a baby crying. Percy kissed Annabeth on the temple. One of the nurses handed them a baby in a pink blanket. “Congratulations! It’s a girl.”

Annabeth was tired and the baby sleeping on her chest. She was about to fall asleep too. “Annabeth, do you have any name ideas?”

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams," Annabeth mumbled. Percy didn’t get why Annabeth was talking in quotations. He googled what Annabeth said.

“Eleanor Roosevelt,” Percy said. “You want to name her Eleanor?”

Annabeth had closed her eyes but gave Percy a thumbs up. "Fight for the things that you care about but do it in a way that will lead others to join you."

Percy googled what she said for a second time. “Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Eleanor Ruth?” he asked.

Annabeth gave him a thumbs up for a second time. “Lana.” She said sleepily.

“You know that it would have been easier if you just said the name.” Percy laughed as he whispered to her ear. Annabeth pulled him from his shirt collar. For a moment he thought that she would punch him but what she did surprised him even more. She kissed him. “Happy Birthday Percy.”
Percy took Lana from Annabeth so she could sleep for a few hours before the rest of their family came to meet the new member of the gang. Percy held his daughter for the first time as the sun was slowly rising. “Happy Birthday Lana.”
