Chapter 1: i'm not the traitor

Chapter Text

His whole body ached and Remus figured it was due to what happened a month ago

Sirius had his wand facing him. James was behind him in a fighting stance but not quite pointing the wand at the werewolf. Lily was by the stairs staring quietly.

“What is going on?” Remus hissed.

“Don’t act as if you don’t know”. Sirius told him with disgust in his tone

“I have no idea what you are talking about”. Remus said, eyeing the exit. He didn't feel like being in a place where he had a wand pointed at him.

“You Remus.....you sided with them...told them all our secrets,” James said from behind.

“Is that what you think?” Remus said incredulously. He had thought that the distance they had kept with him was because they were on edge...not because they suspected him.

“I am not the traitor,” Remus said angrily

“Then why were you seen with convicted werewolves” Sirius accused

“·I was on a mission and if you don't believe me you can ask Dumbledore.” Remus glared at Sirius.

“Bullshit....you've been selling us out,” Sirius said not believing him.

“You don't believe me.....fine bring out the veritaserum....ask me again,” Remus said, directing his gaze at Lily.

Moments after he was tied up on a chair and given the veritaserum.

“Now.....I'm gonna ask you this first question and I want you to try to lie” James said.

“Is it true that you are a werewolf?”

Remus tried saying no and he also resisted saying anything but then he felt the burn of the potion and finally said yes.

“Alright so it works....now onto the important question,” Sirius said, stepping in front of James with a glare directed at Remus.

“Are you the traitor?” Sirius asked

“No,” Remus said as he saw the other three people in the room change from angry to ashamed.

“Now let me go.....you've had your answer,'' Remus said, struggling against the ropes.

“Where do you disappear to?” Sirius asked

“Dumbledore sends me on missions...I spy for the order and recruit people for the cause.” Remus then glared at Sirius for making him answer more questions.

“Remus I-” Sirius said with an ashamed look on his face

“Let me go....now” Remus hissed, ignoring any plea for an apology.

He didn't bother to look at any of them as Lily untied him.  Once he was free he took the antidote for the veritaserum and stood up still not facing anyone.

“Was it because I'm a werewolf.....the reason you couldn't trust me.....don't lie I deserve as much.” He asked, looking at the floor.

“In part yes.....Remus, I'm so- “ Lily tried saying

“I guess it was about time.....it was too good to be true” Remus sighed, rubbing his face with his hand. He was trying hard not to cry.

“Moony I....we are so sorry, how can we fix this” James pleaded

I-.... I think I have to go, excuse me,” Remus said quickly walking towards the door.

He ignored the shouts for him to stay.

Once he was outside the tears started falling out. He should've known....after all, he was just a dark creature.

“Moony-” Sirius said

“Go away Sirius,” Remus said, wiping the tears out of his eyes.

“Moony, please...I just want to talk.”

“You didn't give me a chance to talk when you walked out of our apartment so why should I let you know,” Remus said trying to regain his composure

“Moony, I'm so sorry.....please I just want to fix things...I still love you....please let me fix this....us” Sirius sobbed from behind him.

“Well, you can't Sirius because right now I don't trust you...any of you!”  Remus cried

“Remus-”

“I'm leaving” Remus cut Sirius off

“That's why I came here......I don't think I'll come back.” He said looking away

“What moony...what do you mean you won't come back,” Sirius said panicking.

“I can't say,” Remus said quietly

It was for the best....it was better this way....he wouldn't hurt so many people if he was alone. He wouldn’t be able to get hurt

“Remus...tell me please,” Sirius said, grabbing his arm.

Remus looked back at him with teary eyes.

“Goodbye Sirius” he whispered as he pulled away and apparated himself out of sight

Moony was punishing him for staying away from his pack since he found himself with several broken bones and big gashes across his chest

After the full moon, Remus laid down not being able to bear the pain. It was an hour later until he decided it was time to get up. He patched himself as well as possible and then headed out to gain information on a werewolf pack he was tracking.

Deep down Remus knew it was pointless....the wolves didn't want anything to do with the wizardkind....in fact, if they had to be in the war they always sided with Voldemort since he was the only one capable of producing change for them.

It was a sad thought but a true one. Although if Voldemort won it was most likely he would kill the werewolves.

So in any case there was no winning for his kind...they will always be discriminated against but he pushed those thoughts aside.

Remus kept telling himself if the wizarding kind saw that the werewolves stood with the good side, maybe they could change their point of view of them.

So Remus kept going...searching. But the more he searched about the new pack he lost hope. This pack was ruthless....they murdered without any sort of remorse and it was clear they had already chosen aside.

Needing a drink he headed to the closest pub. He had hoped he could recruit some wolfs but it wasn't meant to be....so now he had to become a spy. And that meant finding the pack and proving himself worthy.

He took a big swig of his drink pushing the dread aside. Proving himself worthy to those types of packs usually meant having to kill someone. For the time being, he had been able to avoid such initiations but having gathered the information over this pack he knew it wasn't going to be that case this time.

He kept thinking this over when a figure bumped into him.

The figure mumbled a sorry and normally Remus would shrug it off but this time he took another look at the person who bumped him.

He was wearing a black cloak that covered most of his body and face. The figure sat down two seats away from him and ordered a drink. When he grabbed the drink Remus saw it.

The black family ring.

Remus knew he recognized that voice because it was none other than Regulus Black.

What was he doing here? Remus thought.

Where their other death eaters around, he also asked himself.

Remus continued looking at him discreetly. He watched as he scribbled something down. In a piece of paper and put it on an envelope.

He then handed it to the bartender with a pack of money. Remus vaguely heard Regulus asking him if he could send it through the post. Remus then watched as Regulus got up with a sigh seemingly dreading something.

When Regulus exited the pub Remus saw the bartender put down the envelope.

Discreetly Remus whispered. “Accio envelope”.

The letter soon was in his hand and Remus quickly opened it

Dear Siri,

If you are reading this then I am dead. You were right....our parents were wrong. I really wish I could see you so you can tell me “I told you so” to my face.

I'm sorry that I haven't been the brother you deserved...I'm sorry that I didn't stand by your side when you needed me or defended you to our parents. I'm sorry I was a fool to ever listen to them...and to their awful idealogy. I'm sorry I went along with them and I'm sorry I never left with you.

I'm sorry for a lot of things.

I hope that one day you can find it in yourself to forgive me for all the mistakes I have committed. I wish I could see you one last time and tell you all about what I'm about to do but I know it isn't safe as there is a traitor in your mists. So I want to say that even though I wasn't the brother you deserved, to me you were the best brother one could ever have. You were the only one who actually cared for me and for that I will always love you. You brought me joy when there was none in our horrible household.

I know I can't make right all the things that happened to you....that was done to you,  but the least I can do is make right to the cause...the orders cause. In death, I hope to bring everybody closer to the demise of the dark lord.

If there were another way I would take it but there isn't...not that I know of anyway. So this is where I leave you.

Don't mourn me too much and Sirius....you will be alright.

Your annoying little brother

R.A.B

Remus quickly read it and soon lept outside to follow Regulus and possibly stop him from whatever he was about to do. If Regulus died Sirius would be so heartbroken and that just didn't sit right with Remus.
