Chapter 1: The Subway

Chapter Text

Cyborg and Beast boy were fighting over who got the last slice of pizza while Raven rolled her eyes from the corner of the room, trying to focus on her meditation, but failing. Starfire was trying to establish peace between Beast boy and Cyborg and she was also failing. Robin smirked. He thought this scene of his team perfectly encapsulated their time together in the Teen Titans house. While Robin liked watching his friends be crazy together, his skin itched for excitement. He was on edge, feeling like something could go wrong at any time. He didn’t hope for something to go wrong, but he wouldn’t be upset if something did. He felt at his best when he was helping others. Hanging out here all day wasn’t helping anybody and he knew he had to get out there.
Suddenly as if right on cue, an alarm went off. Someone was holding hostages inside the subway cars of Gotham.
“Titans! Let’s go!”
.
Robin and the team found themselves in the subway just in time. There was an ominous cackle coming from the subway cars. People were screaming and there was a stampede of people heading for the exits. Robin noticed there was a man crouched on top of the subway car with long blue claws that were electrified by some type of gadget on his wrists. His smile stretched wide across his face, his hair was long, stringy, and navy blue. Beast boy transformed into a gorilla and started running in his direction.
“I would rethink that if I were you!” The blue haired man said.
“Beast boy wait!!” Robin shouted. The man was threatening to electrocute everyone inside the car if we got much closer.
Beast boy was already in pursuit. He was trying to stop but he couldn’t. The man raised his claws and struck in Beast boy’s direction. Thankfully, Cyborg pulled him out of the way but not fast enough. The electricity stung Beast boy’s arm and he transformed back to himself, curled up on the ground, clutching his sizzling flesh.
“What do you want you evil man!” Starfire yelled.
“Gotham should fear The Blue Knight!” The man barked.
“Seriously? The Blue Knight? You gotta be more original than that man.” Cyborg scoffed.
“Beast boy, are you okay?” Robin asked as Cyborg got under The Blue Knight’s skin.
“I’m good, just get those people out of there.”
Robin ran over to where Cyborg had been standing. He saw the look of terror in the hostages eyes. He knew that sooner or later The Blue Knight was going to be done waiting and he would kill everyone on board.
He signaled Raven, thankfully, they had been working together long enough that Raven knew exactly what was going through Robin’s head. She focused steadily on the subway car and was able to lift it up off the rails. Robin could tell he had been gaining power from the electrified railing beneath the cars so if Raven could detach the two, the hostages would be in less danger. The Blue Knight jumped off the car, screaming like a maniac.
“You won’t stop me that easy!”
While he didn’t have the power of the city at his fingertips, he did have a little saved electricity in his gadgets. He began shooting rapid lightning bolts at all of us spermatically. He was sloppy and that’s how Robin knew they were going to win—they always did.
.
Before long the police showed up, arresting the perp the Teen Titans had caught for them.
“Nice work team.” Robin smiled.
“I especially liked the part where Raven threw that trash can at him.” Starfire smiled.
“You should probably have that arm looked at Beast boy.” Raven uttered, trying not to sound too invested.
“It’s just a little scratch, man, I’ll be fine.” Beast boy smiled, rubbing the back of his head.
“Come on, let’s go get some more pizza, I’m starving!” Cyborg said, making his way to the stairs.
“You guys just ate.” Raven protested.
“Defeating bad guys makes us hungry, okay?” Beast boy said.
They were all laughing and carrying on, but that’s when Robin heard something. He couldn’t tell if it was his imagination or if it was real. He broke away from the group and looked within the empty subway tunnels. Something was eery about it, there was something definitely not right but he couldn’t put his finger on it. The rest of the Teen Titans turned around to face Robin.
“Are you coming, Robin?” Starfire asked.
“You guys go on…I think there’s something I might need to…look into.”
“You sure?” Beast boy asked.
“Positive. I’ll meet you guys back at home.”
And with that they left, leaving Robin to question his own hearing.
“Robin” It whispered. “Robin!”
“Hello? Is someone there?”
It sounded like a young girl, and it sounded like she was trapped somewhere in the tunnel. Robin hopped down near the railing, careful not to get too close. He began walking. It got harder and harder to see, but the voice was getting louder—he was headed in the right direction.
“Robin!”
“Robin!!!”
“ROBIN!!!”
Robin looked down to find a small, portable radio. He picked it up, turning it over in his hand. The voices stopped and he was in complete darkness. He wondered if this was one of The Blue Knights tricks that went unused or if someone was playing a prank on him. He dropped the recorder and started walking back when he heard the voice.
“Robin”
A shiver went down his spine.
Slade.
Before Robin had time to react a gas was released. It was potent and it worked quickly. Robin tried to run but he found himself being drug down. His vision was blurring, his movements were sluggish, he fell to the ground and saw a set of feet standing near his face. He was in no condition to fight anyone, he tried getting back up but his efforts were futile.
“You don’t have to fight Robin, just relax.” The voice said.
And within seconds, Robin drifted off into oblivion.
