Work Text:

When Yoongi woke up on the morning of his fourth anniversary with Jeongguk, he knew he had a busy day ahead. There were a few things to get done until his boyfriend woke up and then some more after he'd leave for work. At first, Yoongi had been a little upset that Jeongguk had been asked to come into work for a meeting on their anniversary, but he quickly realised that it meant he was distracted. The original plan was that Jimin would get Jeongguk out of the apartment for some reason, but this? This worked even better.

His morning routine was almost the same as it was every day. He woke up, picked out his clothes and went to take a shower. Because Holly, the toy poodle he and Jeongguk had adopted in their second year together, would paw at the door otherwise, he let the dog inside the bathroom as well. When he was done showering and putting on clothes, he grabbed Holly's leash.

"Come on," he said quietly to the dog who looked like he was considering joining Jeongguk in bed. "Let's go for a walk." Upon hearing one of his favourite words - 'walk' -, Holly rushed over to Yoongi so that he could attach the leash to his collar. Their morning walk wasn't a long one, just long enough to get around the block, and as usual, Yoongi was happy to let Holly sniff on everything he found interesting.

As they stepped back into the elevator of their building, Yoongi squatted down to pet Holly. "I'm gonna drop you off at Uncle Hobi and Uncle Jin's later, yeah?" he said quietly. "Because I love you but I can't have you accidentally choke on a rose petal or something while I'm trying to propose." Holly blinked back at him. "You understand that, right?"

Back in the apartment, Yoongi started making breakfast - French Toast, which was Jeongguk's favourite. They still had some leftovers from last night's dinner but Yoongi would just give that to Seokjin and Hoseok when he dropped off Holly later. Since it was their anniversary, they had breakfast in bed. Sleepy Jeongguk was a favourite of Yoongi's, so he couldn't help but press kisses on his boyfriend's face as they were eating. And as they ate - and Yoongi was reminded of how in love he was with this man - he couldn't help but think of tonight.

Tonight, Yoongi was going to propose to Jeongguk. If he was being honest, Yoongi had thought about proposing to Jeongguk for two years now. But he had waited. Not because he thought Jeongguk would've said no. His boyfriend loved him just as much as Yoongi loved him. But Yoongi had been worried that Jeongguk would've said yes despite not being ready. The younger had always been a little chaotic and Yoongi had known that Jeongguk's life had not been how he wanted it to be - something was off. During the last year though, things started to get better. Jeongguk had gotten a promotion, he had started teaching art lessons in their neighbourhood's community centre and when he got too stressed he let Yoongi take care of him. It seemed like Jeongguk was truly happy now, so Yoongi felt comfortable asking Jeongguk to marry him. And Yoongi wouldn't be Yoongi if he didn't make a big romantic gesture out of it.

That big romantic gesture needed preparation though. So after Jeongguk left for his work meeting at the museum, Yoongi gathered some of Holly's stuff that he needed for a sleepover. Thankfully, Holly loved being in the car, so the ride over to his friends' apartment wasn't too much of a hassle. The plan was to just drop his dog off, but of course, his friends wanted him to stay and talk to them.

"Hyung, come on, I have stuff to do," Yoongi complained when Seokjin tried to get him to stay for a cup of coffee.

Seokjin grinned at him. "Stuff like proposing to the love of your life?"

Yoongi blinked. "Well, actually I need to clean the apartment, prepare dinner and decorate a little," he replied. "The proposing part isn't until tonight when we have dinner."

"Which means you have time for a coffee." Seokjin turned to switch the coffee machine on.

"Hyung-"

"Seokjin hyung, let the poor man leave," Hoseok interrupted from where he was already cuddling Holly in his arms. He sent Yoongi a gentle smile. "I can tell he's a little nervous."

"I'm not-" Yoongi stopped himself from denying it. He truly was a little nervous to pop the question. Not because he thought Jeongguk might say no. He was 99.9% sure Jeongguk was going to say yes and even if he wasn't that wasn't the end of their relationship. Yoongi was more nervous about tonight not being a perfect and memorable evening.

He had told Jeonguk that he had made reservations at a restaurant but really they were going to have dinner at home. Yoongi loved to cook for Jeongguk and this way they'd have more privacy - also Yoongi would have a little more control over their surroundings. In their apartment, he could make sure everything was perfect. So yeah, he was a little nervous. The good kind of nervous, though.

Once his friends let him leave and he arrived back home, he let out a deep breath. He had told his friends he had a lot to do and that was true, but he had plenty of time until Jeongguk came back home. Their apartment was pretty clean already since Jeongguk liked everything to be neat and he could still set the table and decorate the living room while the food was cooking.

He sat down at his desk in his office or well, studio, and turned on the computer. He had spent a lot of time in this room, sometimes hours on end so that Jeongguk checked on him to make sure that he was at least staying hydrated. He had also composed and produced a lot of works in this room. His favourite pieces were in one specific folder, though - pieces he had been working on for years. The name of the folder was 'Euphoria' but it might as well have been 'Jeongguk'.

Yoongi's anniversary gift for Jeongguk wasn't the proposal. That wasn't much of a gift, it was, well, an offer to take a new step in their relationship. His present was exactly this folder of songs that Yoongi had composed for him over the years. Jeongguk had never listened to any of them, he didn't even know they existed. Yoongi had shared a lot of songs he had produced with his boyfriend but not these. They had never felt finished until a few weeks ago. Knowing himself, Yoongi would probably write a hundred more songs about Jeongguk - the man was his best and favourite muse. But today he wanted Jeongguk to listen to the pieces he had already composed.

Originally, he had just wanted to listen to the songs again, making sure that everything was as perfect as it could be. He had not planned at all to accidentally fall asleep on his desk, only to wake up a couple of hours later. Clearly, he hadn't gotten enough sleep in the last few weeks. He grumbled to himself as he realised that this had absolutely fucked up his schedule and he needed to really hurry to get everything done in time.

"This is so typical," he mumbled as he carefully cut an onion for the pot of manduguk stewing on the stove. He knew if he tried to hurry through the cooking process he would only accidentally cut his fingers, so he made sure to prepare the food at a relaxed speed. Which of course meant that he rushed through the apartment to set the table as the stew was cooking. He was just glad that he had already planned exactly how to set the table, having hidden the new tablecloth and candle holder in a small box under their bed.

As he lit the candles on the table and any other candles that he could find in their apartment, he thanked himself for the smart idea to drop off Holly at his friends' place. If the dog would've seen Yoongi rushing around the apartment, he definitely would've gotten excited and tried to eat the candles. Yoongi and Jeongguk had long learned that their dog was strangely fascinated by fire which was not always cute.

"Oh, shit, the samgyeopsal." Yoongi cursed when he got a message from his boyfriend, saying he'd be home in about 30 minutes. For a second, he froze trying to figure out what he still had to get done and which order would be the most effective. He had to make samgyeopsal, put on a suit and spread rose petals on the floor from the front door to the dining table. Not wanting Jeongguk to walk in on him later with just half a suit on, he quickly got that done first, before throwing the rose petals on the floor as quickly as he could without making it look careless. Cooking the meat thankfully didn't take long and Yoongi put on an apron just to make sure he didn't get any food onto his suit.

Looking back, he wasn't really sure how he managed to get everything done by the time Jeongguk arrived. But when his boyfriend opened the front door, he was standing in front of the dining table and holding a flower bouquet that he had bought on his way back home after dropping off Holly. "Welcome home, love."

"You-" Jeongguk let out a giggle and hid his face behind his hands. "Oh my god."

Yoongi smiled, feeling all of the stress of the last few hours disappear. "Happy anniversary. Again." He walked up to his boyfriend and pulled him in for a kiss, being careful not to squish the flowers in between them.

Jeongguk gently touched the flowers. "These are so pretty. Thank you so much. Do you have a vase for them?"

"Of course." He motioned to the water-filled vase on the dining table. Jeongguk pressed another kiss to Yoongi's cheek, before taking the flowers and placing them into the vase.

"I'm guessing we're gonna have dinner at home?" Jeongguk curiously raised his eyebrows at his boyfriend. "Where's Holly?"

Yoongi hummed and let one of his hands rest on Jeongguk's waist. "I thought it would be cosier like this. Holly is having a sleepover at Hoseok and Seokjin's place."

The younger nodded, leaning into his boyfriend. "What are we having? It smells amazing."

"One second." Yoongi gently manoeuvred Jeongguk onto one of the chairs, before rushing into the kitchen to carry the food over to the dining table.

When Jeongguk saw the plate full of samgyeopsal, his eyes widened. "You know, I love you right?" he grinned, already reaching for his chopsticks. "I'm starving and you made me samgyeopsal."

"Dig in," Yoongi replied with an amused laugh and softly patted Jeongguk's head before sitting down as well. When Jeongguk didn't immediately start eating, he raised an eyebrow. "What?"

His boyfriend smiled cutely, scrunching up his nose. "Won't you feed me the first bite?"

"Ah, how could I forget?" Yoongi laughed again and picked up a piece of meat and reached over the table to feed it to his boyfriend. "Better?" Chewing happily, Jeongguk nodded. God, he was so adorable. Yoongi couldn't wait to marry this man - if he wanted to, of course.

"So." They were about halfway through dinner when Jeongguk teasingly nudged Yoongi's calf with his toes. "Did you get me a present?"

Yoongi snorted. "Don't you wanna wait until after dinner?"

Jeongguk pouted. "I'm impatient."

"Alright," he replied with a small smile on his lips. He got up and grabbed his phone that was already connected to their bluetooth speakers. Humming, he pulled up the files of the songs for Jeongguk and pressed play. Jeongguk immediately sat up straight, turning his head to look at his boyfriend. "I, uh- in the past few years I've composed some pieces for you. I struggle to really put my feelings for you into words but it's a lot easier to put them into arrangements."

"I-" Jeongguk interrupted himself to properly listen. Yoongi had listened to the arrangements so many times it felt like the melodies were part of his body and soul, but to Jeongguk it was all new. He watched his boyfriend close his eyes, completely forgetting that they had been eating dinner. Then suddenly, the younger got up and reached out for Yoongi. "Dance with me, please? I want you to hold me when we listen to this."

Yoongi got up and pulled Jeongguk into his arms without hesitation. "We're in the middle of dinner, though."

"I don't care, we can eat later," Jeongguk mumbled and wrapped his arms around Yoongi's neck. He leaned his head against his boyfriend's. "You really wrote this for me?"

"Yeah." Yoongi softly ran one of his hands over Jeongguk's back, before pressing a kiss to Jeongguk's neck. "And I'm gonna write you a lot more, believe me."

Jeongguk sniffled quietly and pulled Yoongi even closer. They weren't even dancing, just standing next to the table, hugging each other as tightly as they could. The longer Yoongi got to hold Jeongguk, the more emotional he felt himself getting. This was really his life. He got to feel Jeongguk melt against him whenever he wanted to, got to kiss him too. How had he ever gotten so lucky?

"I have another surprise," Yoongi whispered without letting go of Jeongguk. He had already given Jeongguk his present earlier than planned, they might as well do the proposal early too. Because there was no way Yoongi could wait until they were done with dancing and eating. "You know, I love you, right?"

Jeongguk hummed. "I love you, too."

The elder breathed in Jeongguk's scent and gently grabbed onto the material of Jeongguk's dress shirt, swaying them back and forth. "You know when I first saw you, when we ran into each other at the museum, I thought I saw an angel. There were so many beautiful works of art in that building and still, I instantly knew you were the most beautiful of them all."

"Hyung," his boyfriend whined and turned his head so he could kiss the shell of Yoongi's ear.

"I'm not lying and you know that." He teasingly pinched Jeongguk's side. "You're the most breathtaking person to me, you're beautiful inside and out. I love you so much. Every morning I wake up and I thank the gods above for letting me be in your life. It doesn't even feel like we've been together for four years, it feels like much much longer. Thanks to you I've grown into a better person. Your voice is my favourite sound in the world, your laugh is my favourite melody. Every song I write, every melody I play, I create them for you and because of you. You are the music in my heart."

Jeongguk let out a breathless laugh, clutching onto his boyfriend. "Didn't you just say you can't put your feelings into words?"

Yoongi laughed as well. "I've been preparing this for a while." He slowly pulled out of Jeongguk's embrace and took his boyfriend's hands into his. "The bottom line is this. I love you not only for who you are but also for who you make me. So I wanted to ask you-" He pulled a ring box out of the pocket of his slacks before kneeling down.

"Oh my god."

He grinned up at Jeongguk who was using his free hand to cover his mouth. "I wanted to ask you whether you would like to be my husband." Somehow he managed to open the ring box successfully with one hand. "Jeon Jeongguk, will you marry me?"

Jeongguk let out a squeaky giggle and immediately fell to his knees as well. "Yes, of course, oh my god, lemme see those rings."

"Sure, the most important part." Yoongi snorted and took one of the rings out of the box so that he could slide it onto Jeongguk's finger. Jeongguk's ring was a small and dainty vine cutout ring that matched Yoongi's which was just a simple band with the vine engraved on the inside instead.

"So beautiful," Jeongguk whispered to himself as he spun the ring on his finger. Then he reached out to grab the back of Yoongi's neck and pulled him in for a kiss. He hummed against his lips. "I love you and I love the ring. I can't wait to be your husband. I can't wait for you to be my husband."

Yoongi ran his thumb over Jeongguk's cheek. "You'll have to be content with being fiancés for now."

The younger smiled and leaned into Yoongi's touch. "Do you want to see my surprise now?" When Yoongi nodded, he pulled slightly away and started unbuttoning his dress shirt. He slid out of one sleeve and turned so that Yoongi could see the cling film on his arm. Underneath was a fresh tattoo that Jeongguk must've just gotten today. "Tada."

"You got a new tattoo?" Yoongi gently grabbed Jeongguk's arm, careful not to touch the fresh ink. It was a tattoo of flowers framing hands playing the piano - his hands. Yoongi recognised the sketch, Jeongguk had taken a similar picture of his hands once. "You got my hands tattooed on you."

"These are your birth flowers, too," Jeongguk pointed out proudly. "This way, you're always with me."

Yoongi smiled and cupped his face. "You made me part of your art."

"As I am part of your music," he replied, grabbing Yoongi's wrist. The elder looked at the tears glistening in Jeongguk's eyes, knowing his own looked the same. His heart was beating in his chest so loudly and so rapidly that he was sure Jeongguk could feel it too. "I love you."

"I love you." They pressed their foreheads together and just breathed, letting the moment sink in. It probably looked silly, the way they were kneeling on the floor next to their dining table, bodies intertwined. Yoongi wasn't even wearing his engagement ring yet. But this was forever. This feeling, this love, them.

"Hyung, I think our food is getting cold."
