Work Text:
Rain is falling on Kyungsoo’s face when he wakes up, slightly cold and without a blanket to pull over his shoulders. He fell asleep like this last night, had kicked off the sheets and opened the window in an attempt to let in the cool pre-autumn air.
To think it would get this cold so fast. Kyungsoo stretches up to close the window, squinting at the sky. It can’t be any later than five— the sky is still dark, and mornings don’t start until six, at least. He has half a mind to go back to sleep. After all, the general rule is if the sun isn’t up, he isn’t up. But the digital clock at his bedside is blinking its warning, so he turns off his alarm before it can go off and sleepily makes for his phone, pulling it from the charger.
No notifications. Predictable. He puts in his passcode and, still squinting, dials the number that at this point he can type with his eyes closed.
It’s a couple of seconds before he hears a click. “Hello?”
“Good morning,” Kyungsoo slurs, lying back in bed and closing his eyes. From the other end he hears Baekhyun laugh.
“Good morning. Didn’t I tell you you don’t have to wake up early every day to call me?”
“Mm.”
Kyungsoo can hear the whistling of the train over the phone. Baekhyun must be starting his commute to work as he always is when he calls. It’s been a routine for them since the beginning, to talk in the morning and at night when they’re both free and awake. Though Baekhyun insisted it would be better to just talk at night every once in a while, Kyungsoo thought it would be better for him to call every morning. After all, Baekhyun shouldn’t stay up late only to have to go to work early in the morning. And he doesn’t want to wait every couple of days for a lucky moment to talk to Baekhyun, not when they have so little opportunities to talk throughout the day. Not being able to see him is hard enough. To not be able to hear him either would be enough to drive Kyungsoo insane, despite how well he seems to take Baekhyun’s absence.
Baekhyun knows it too. “What are you doing up? You don’t usually call this early.”
“I left the window open. It’s raining.”
“Aw, babe.” Baekhyun laughs. “Stop being so stubborn and turn on the AC.”
“But that’s so much energy wasted when I can just leave the windows open.”
“What an eco friendly guy,” Baekhyun teases. He pauses to talk to someone, and Kyungsoo lets the muffled sound of conversation lull him a bit before coming back to Baekhyun calling his name. “Go to sleep,” he says.
“No, I’m not tired.”
“Liar.”
“Not lying.”
“You’re already falling asleep.”
It’s true. Kyungsoo’s eyes are closed, his voice taking on that mumbling quality it has only when he’s relaxed and ready for bed. But still, he stubbornly denies it. “I’m awake.”
“Sleep, Kyungja,” Baekhyun gently insists. “I’ll call you later. I promise.”
“... Fine.”
“Good night,” Baekhyun says.
“Stay safe. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
And the line clicks softly, his phone falling beside his head as he drifts again.
