Chapter Text

You let out a shuddered breath in an attempt to calm your nerves. You wondered how you found yourself at the door of the “Great and Terrible Urameshi” but only remembered the reasons why you shouldn’t be there. Contemplating what the hell was wrong with you, you wondered why were you going out of your way to meet the guy that everyone at school feared? Sure, Keiko was your friend and was in desperate need of a double date partner, but agreeing to it meant having to sit with Yusuke. And sure, she isn’t apparently terrified of him, but that didn’t mean anything. For all you knew she just enjoyed being terrified and liked to live on the dangerous side!

Okay. Perhaps that was too much of a stretch. But that still did not explain why you were here. Yes, you found yourself attracted to the self-proclaimed bad boy, but so what? You’ve run into other bad boys before and didn’t feel the need to seek them out despite your rebellious attitude and apparent need for some rule-breaking in your life. What made him different? Was it that weird pull you seemed to feel whenever he was around that drove you crazy? That awful feeling you’d get where all you wanted to do was squeeze to him as tightly as possible and never leave his side? ‘Shut the hell up, ____’ You cursed yourself, the scowl forming to accompany your words. ‘Stop acting like some lovesick puppy. This wasn’t love. This was just lust with a hint of desperate.’

Despite your argumentative points, the romantic side of you still pinned over the idea of him cradling you, showing you a side of him many others wouldn’t see. Oh, why must your emotional state always be contradicting your common sense and carefully thought out logic?

“Fuck it.” The words escaped you with a sigh as you knocked on his door. There were a few ways this could play out. He could be attracted to you as well, which would be swell. He could be attracted to you and seek a seemingly romantic relationship with you, which would be even better. Or he could reject you completely and mock you…which, out of all the possible outcomes, that one seemed to the most probable.

Your thoughts came to a sudden halt when the door opened, revealing an excited Keiko. ‘Damn her. This was all her idea.’ “Okay, I showed up. What do you want?” The tone of your voice came out harsher than you originally intended but considering the circumstances you were not going to say sorry. Not to mention you knew what she wanted so there was no reason to ask that. Apparently cranky equals playing dumb and being a bitch in your mind.

“It took you long enough! We’ve been waiting for you!” She cheered, pulling you into the small area by the arm. By ‘we’ she must have meant Yusuke was here as well as her own possible date, Dagon. Dagon was a close friend of yours that you met as soon as you moved here. He had greeted you with a smile despite your awkward glances at others and even stood by your side when you had tried to push him away with insults. At the time, you didn’t want to make new friends, but it was your luck that he was too stubborn to not befriend you. Something you knew to always be thankful for.

“Sorry to keep you waiting. I just had to get somewhat cleaned up.” It was a weak excuse and happened to be a half-truth. If you had told them ‘sorry, I was just debating on if this was a good idea or not for about an hour or so’ then they may have shown some animosity.

As your gaze moved around the room it landed on Yusuke. His eyes were narrowed and his face, as always, had a look of annoyance. ‘Great, this damn double date hasn’t even started yet and he wants to fight me.’ Amusement found its way to your expression as you thought about how that fight would even go. You wouldn’t beat him, but you’d at least get a few good hits in there.

This was when you noticed he wasn’t in his usual outfit. The green on green clothing choice was nowhere to be seen and in its place was nice fitting jeans and a lose white T-shirt he had tucked into his pants. You couldn’t help but let your eyes scan the hinted curves and edges of his body, starting from the face and moving down to his legs. ‘He looks good in that. Oh great, does this make me a lecher? No, I think I'd have to make some kind of move for that...still I hate myself.’

“It’s not a problem! So, are we all ready to go?” Keiko pulled you away from your thoughts, looking over at Dagon who smiled warmly at her. “Sure am.” His statement was apparently a bit too cheery for Yusuke’s taste, earning him a glare from the locally known tough guy. ‘Ah, that is right. This double date started because she wanted to go out with Dagon but Yusuke didn’t trust him.’ You sighed at the realization that he didn’t trust Dagon most likely due to his own feelings towards Keiko. Then again, if that was true, why would he even support the idea of her dating someone in front of him? ‘Stop trying to over-analyze things,___’

“Let’s just go and get this over with.” Yusuke complained, and if that wasn't a swift kick to the ego than you didn't know what was.

Keiko rolled her eyes and grabbed Dagon’s arm, leading you all out of the apartment. Your destination turned out to be a nice place to eat, something you were shocked to find out due to your date’s usual attitude. Obviously, Dagon must have picked it. He always had a thing for ‘the finer things in life’ which did little in explaining your friendship.

The couple ahead of you gushed the entire walk, compliments between each other and playful stories filled their conversation. As for you and Yusuke? No such luck.

He stayed quiet, letting his brooding aura speak for him and walked with his arms folded behind his head. There was no way the date could get any worse for you and it had just started. It seemed your fear of the rejection path was even more probable. Well, since it couldn’t get worse, you may as well try?

“So, Yusuke...” “What?” His reply was quick and he glanced in your direction, startling you slightly. You didn’t think he was paying that much attention to his surroundings so when he actually answered you the first time it was a shock.

“Have you ever heard of the place we are headed? I haven’t been so… I don’t know if it’s any good.” You hoped the fact would spark a conversation, wanting him to at least try to get along with you.

“Nah, never been. I hadn’t planned on ever going either. Not really my thing.” Pleased with his reply you finally smiled for the first time since meeting up with them.

“Yeah, it’s not really mine either if I’m honest. I mean, sometimes I’ll get a little expensive with food, but that’s only if there is a buffet.” He chuckled at your reply and let his arms fall to his side. Could this be the start of a delightful acquaintanceship?

“I can tell you like buffets.” He joked. And, there went the moment. You rolled your eyes at his joke.

“Get more for my buck? Who wouldn’t like that? Besides, a variety is always a good thing to have, which is advice I wish you would take for your wardrobe.” You smirked as your witty comment left your lips. You already knew he wouldn’t be impressed with you, so why not be as much as an ass to him as he was to you?

You expected him to shout and let his temper show but instead, he laughed, pushing his hands into his pockets. “You seemed to like my ‘wardrobe’ choice earlier when you were checking me out.” His mocking of your word choice angered you, but the rage was quickly swept away and replaced with embarrassment when he finished his sentence. You felt your face heat up and looked away. “Checking you out? I was simply in shock that you weren’t coated in that awful green color.” You tried to add venom in your words but failed as your brunet friend spoke up.

“Awful? I thought you loved that color?” Keiko looked back at you innocently and you shot her a glare. She knew what she was doing and how dare she take his side! Yusuke let out a laugh and threw an arm around your shoulder while the hand on the other arm moved to poke your cheek.

“Looks like you’ve been betrayed.” He teased. You turned your face and bit towards his finger, of course missing it on purpose.

“Hey, no biting till at least the first date is over with!” Despite his words were being shouted he had a confident smirk on his face. “Unless of course you actually want to just skip the entire thing and get to the end.”

“Oh, shut the hell up!” No matter how commanding you tried to make the sentence sound, it still came out in a whiny pitch.

Keiko glared at Yusuke. "Don’t you dare threaten to soil my friend!” “If you are so worried, then why the hell did you want her to come along!” Dagon smiled and kissed Keiko’s cheek in an attempt to calm her. “I’m sure he’d meet his match if he tried, Keiko. ___ would probably eat him alive.” A smirk made its way onto your face as your friend stated the facts. You glanced back to Yusuke with a raised eyebrow who was narrowing his eyes towards you.

“ Challenge accepted.”
