A Little Superstitious

Summary:

Castiel isn't clued into all the superstitions of humans quite yet.

Notes:

I like to think Castiel Angel of the Lord possessed me for this one. Happy Cas Day!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“What do you mean you’re leaving?” Castiel feels the panic rise in his chest as Dean grabs his toothbrush and the spare deodorant from above the bathroom sink. He’s been running around like a chicken with his head cut off for the last twenty minutes mumbling something about “needing to get to Sam’s”.

Castiel is scouring every inch of his brain to figure out what he did wrong.

“I can’t stay here tonight, Cas.” Dean turns to face him, the panic creating lines in Dean’s face that Castiel hasn’t seen since the day he was rescued from The Empty.

“I– I don’t understand, Dean. Can we please just talk about this? Whatever I did wrong, I assure you it’s not worth walking out on me… on us… the night before we–” Castiel chokes back a tear, his brain still running a mile a minute but unsure how they went from cuddling on the couch watching Dr. Sexy to this in half an hour.

“Walking out on us? What’re you talking about?” Dean walks towards him, the lines of worry quickly replaced with the softness Castiel is used to.

It’s that softness that breaks the floodgates. Castiel feels a tear escape down his cheek before he can stop it and quickly swipes it away with his own thumb. He finds his voice through the uneasy feeling that settled in his chest, “You’re packing bags and talking about Sam’s place and running all over the bunker like you can’t wait to be as far away from me as possible. What am I to think, Dean? And the night before our wedding… surely whatever it is I did to upset you–”

Dean starts laughing and Castiel is so caught off guard he loses his train of thought. “I’m not sure how this is funny to you, Dean.”

Castiel waits for Dean to settle down before leveling his stare, all sadness has left him and now he’s pissed. It’s unlike Dean to be so careless with Castiel’s feelings, especially when he has yet to explain why he so desperately wants to get away from the bunker on their last night unmarried. Dean must notice the shift in Castiel’s mood because he stops laughing almost immediately and walks forward. Castiel can’t help but lean into his touch as Dean enters their shared space and grasps either side of Castiel’s face.

“Oh, Cas. I’m not– We– It’s bad luck for the groom to see the bri– well, groom– before the wedding and I forgot about it until like twenty-minutes ago so I texted Sam and...” His voice trails off, more explanation seemingly unnecessary. Castiel pauses, wishing he could give Dean the understanding he’s so clearly searching for as his green eyes dart across Castiel’s features.

But it’s just so stupid.

“That’s idiotic,” he says it matter of factly because of all the human traditions he’s gone through for this wedding, this one has to be the absolute worst. “You mean to tell me that I am meant to spend the night before we wed alone because it’s ‘bad luck’ for you to see me?” He looks at his fiancé expectantly and catches the small smirk Dean gives him at his use of air quotes.

Dean’s hands trail from Castiel’s cheeks down his arms to intertwine their fingers. “Well when you put it like that it does seem like a pretty stupid tradition.” He smiles softly and Castiel feels every bad emotion leave his body. “I never meant to scare you, I just figured you and I could use all the luck we can get.”

Castiel scoffs, “We stopped the apocalypse–more than once. I pulled you from hell and you saved me from The Empty… you really think all of that was because of dumb luck?” Dean winces at the reminder of their rough past, but his features ultimately settle on the smile he reserves just for Castiel. It warms his heart and Castiel can’t help but lean in a bit closer to his fiancé. “Now, come. We can finish this episode and then head to bed… luck be damned.”

Dean smiles widely, kicking the duffle bag at his feet into the corner and pulling Castiel in for a gentle kiss. They come up for air and Dean speaks against Castiel’s lips, “We never were very traditional anyway.” Dean kisses Castiel again and Castiel swears he feels like he’s flying.

Castiel smiles into the next kiss, “Yeah, but you’ve always been a little superstitious."

Dean throws his head back in laughter, “Can you blame me? Tomorrow I’m marrying an Angel of the Lord! ” Castiel shakes his head and smiles before lacing their fingers together and pulling his future husband back towards the couch. They settle in comfortably, Castiel wrapped tightly against Dean’s side and he can’t find any reason in the world why a couple would want to spend these moments apart.

Castiel turns to look at Dean and is only partly surprised to find his fiancé already looking back at him. When their eyes meet, Castiel can see the love radiating from Dean’s gaze– not so different from the night he first told Dean how he truly felt. They’ve come so far since Castiel’s confession, and as long as Dean looks at him like that , Castiel is positive they won’t have to worry about luck, fate, or superstition. Because love like that? Well, Castiel has proof it conquers all.
