Chapter Text
It's the sun that wakes you. The rays are not gentle, and your body protests when you sit up. You weren't out long enough to fuck up your skin. Small mercy compared to the unfamiliar beach and wreckage that surrounds you.
"Shit," you wheeze. It'd been fortunate that you'd been close to the rafts when the emergency started. There's not another soul in sight. You don't allow yourself to panic. That always gets people killed in the movies. Instead, you take stock of yourself. Other than dry skin and a mild headache, you're fine.
It hurts to stand up with stiff limbs, but you do it anyway. You scrounge the wreckage for enough loose parts to make a makeshift shelter. The raft will block the sand. Fabric from the sail, sticks, loose boat parts, and what looks like a waterlogged blanket make the T shape to what would generously be called a hut.
You leave the lifejacket that you'd worn out of paranoia in the back of the raft and go searching some more. It seems like a lot of wreckage hit this beach. Fortunate for you. Much better than still being cast out at sea with shitty emergency rations and flareguns for company. Speaking of which, you dig around to make sure said rations and flares are in the raft. They are, to your relief. At least the raft had been prepared for use.
Not much of what you've found on the beach is all that useful right now, but it soothes you to have it. Collecting more wood and some rocks keep your hands busy. It's better to be busy than to relive the events that are too fresh right now. If you don't focus, you can hear the words of the captain. He'd been panicked, thinly veiling his words with fake calm over the sounds of rushing water.
No one on that boat was someone you knew personally. Another mercy. You end the day by struggling to light a fire and then passing out after it's lit.
