“At what time do the fireworks begin?” Maya asked as she closed the door to the rooftop behind her, approaching her friends.
“They said that at 9.” Travis answered, leaning against the tall ledge, Vic standing next to him.
The blonde looked at her smart watch, which read 8:50 pm. Then, she took a seat at the table they had brought up there earlier and took a sip of her soda.
“Is the wifey coming?” Vic asked, tone a bit playful, with her back to Maya as she was looking at the night sky.
The lieutenant simpered at the mention of Carina. Even 10 months after saying ‘I do', the word ‘wife’ still made her stomach flip. In the good way, of course. “Yeah, I invited her to see the fireworks from here. She should be here soon.” She said, resting her forearms on the table.
“Does she know what happened today?” Travis inquired, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Are you kidding? The whole city knows.” The former Olympian took another sip of her soda. “I had to tell her I was fine over 10 times before she believed me.”
“Can you guys believe that happened?” Jack asked from his seat in front of Maya, attracting everyone’s attention. “Did our engine actually got stolen and flipped over?”
There was a moment of silence before everybody on the roof started laughing out loud.
“Stuff like that makes me feel glad I’m no longer captain.” The blonde woman snorted, but her comment made the team stop laughing gradually until they were all silently looking at her. “It’s been 10 months, guys, it’s okay.” Maya reassured them, flashing a small smile. “Can you imagine the headliners tomorrow? ‘Seattle’s bravest or Seattle’s clumsiest, find out all about the stolen fire truck’.” She said with a TV news anchor voice.
That got a chortle or two out of the crew.
“It’s more embarrassing than being on 23.” Jack spoke again, dropping his head until his forehead was on the table.
“Hey!” Vic complained from behind him, turning around to throw a balled up napkin at the male lieutenant because of the jab at her boyfriend’s station.
“It’s true, Andy keeps texting me to make fun of us.” Maya supported Jack, pulling her phone out. “If Andy laughs at us while she’s at 23, it means it was bad.”
Everyone laughed again except Vic who rolled her eyes, even though she wasn’t actually upset.
“I’m just glad the day is almost over.” Ben said, approaching the table. “I mean, we still have half the shift to go through but without the engine…”
The all nodded and answered in agreement. With the engine down, dispatch was diverting calls to other stations, only calling 19 when the aid car or the ladder were needed.
It was in that moment that the door to the roof was opened again, making Maya turn around, beaming at the sight of Carina appearing from the other side. The brunette smiled back at her wife with a sparkle in her eyes.
“Hi, everyone.” The OB greeted as she waved a hand but her eyes never left Maya’s.
An echo of ‘hi, Carina’s and ‘hello’s came from the firefighters.
“I didn’t miss the start of the fireworks, did I?” She asked, walking closer to her wife.
But before anyone could answer, the first explosion of color lit up the sky. All but Maya –who was still looking at Carina– diverted their eyes to the fireworks to enjoy the spectacle. “You’re just in time.”
The Italian closed the distance between them, leaning down to press her lips softly against the blonde’s. “Hi.” She whispered, barely a few centimeters away from Maya’s face.
“Hi.” The other woman repeated with a drowsy smile.
The sound of more fireworks going off made Maya turn to look at the sky as Carina straightened up, playing with the firefighter’s hair for a second before placing her hand on the back of Maya’s neck, applying gentle pressure to the tense muscles.
“Like a Phoenix to the flames, the city of Seattle has risen.” Maya said, moving her soda away so it wasn’t accidentally tumbled over.
The brunette let go of the blonde to take off her coat as she spoke “And just like Seattle, you shall rise, too, bella.” She stated, swinging one leg over the bench so she was stradling it, instead of sitting facing to the front.
The blonde looked away from the fireworks to lock eyes with the love of her life. Her body instinctively leaned into her and, as expected, Carina met her half way. The kiss was slow, languid even but deep and full of love.
They pulled away a few moments later, Maya kissing Carina’s cheek. “Let’s not miss the show.” She said, looking at the sky right after the words left her lips.
Carina, however, didn’t divert her gaze to the sky. Her eyes remained fixed on her wife’s features being bathed by the blue, red and green lights, taking in the soft curve of her brow and nose, followed by the plumpness of her lips and the sharpness of her jaw. Carina stared at her long and hard, her gaze so intense that Maya finally noticed.
The blonde turned to look at her wife, a shy smile on her lips and a crinkle on her nose. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
The OB tilted her head to the side and put an innocent face. “Like what?”
“The spectacle is up there,” The firefighter pointed at the sky, “not down here.” She gestured her face with the same finger.
Carina leaned in, resting her chin on Maya’s shoulder. “What if I told you I like this view way more than the fireworks?” She purred with an arched eyebrow and a tiny smirk.
The corners of the blonde’s mouth turned up higher and she couldn’t resist the urge to kiss Carina right then and there. The brunette moved her hand previously resting on her own knee to Maya’s waist and the other to grab the inside of her thigh, pulling her closer.
However, the kiss got cut short by Vic’s voice. “C’mon guys, stop being so cute and look at the fireworks!” She insisted.
“Honestly, I don’t like fireworks very much.” Carina chuckled as she shrugged.
Everyone present, including Maya, looked at the brunette, confusion all over their faces.
“Who doesn’t like fireworks? Why?” Travis was the one who finally asked.
“Eh…” The Italian shrugged again. “I mean, sure, they’re beautiful for a second but then I remember that many pets get literally scared to death by them, the air pollution, and let’s not even mention the amount of people that get hurt for not knowing how to properly use them or for buying illegal fireworks.” She ranted.
All the firefighters thought about if for a moment.
“She’s not wrong, though.” Ben finally spoke.
“And they can cause wildfires, too.” Jack added, raising a finger. He never contradicted Carina, not wanting to get on her bad side again.
They all got into a little discussion on the matter but the married couple ignored them after Jack’s statement in favor to get back in their romantic bubble.
“If you don’t like fireworks, why did you agree to come?” Maya asked, mesmerized by the sparkle of the fireworks reflected on her wife’s eyes.
Carina drew her bottom lip between her teeth before answering, raising one of her hands to caress the blonde’s chin with her thumb. “Because I love spending every single moment I can with you… and with our friends… our family.”
Maya didn’t think she could love Carina even more before that moment but she wasn’t so sure anymore. So she just did what every other sane person in her place would do and took the brunette’s lips with her own, kissing her fiercely and lovingly at the same time.
She rested her forehead on the doctor’s when they reluctantly pulled away. “Sono così fortunata di chiamarti mia moglie.”
Carina beamed at those words, her heart always started racing when she heard Maya speak in her language. “Sono io la fortunata.”
They stayed in that position for a few minutes before shifting to look at the fireworks, moving as close together as they could, enjoying the beautiful Seattle night and the amazing company of their fire family.
