Work Text:
Maya was nervous.
No, nervous was not the right word. She was anxious, jittery, even a little bit worried. Her brain was racing at 100 miles per hour and, not wanting to bother Carina, she had gotten out of bed earlier than usual –there wasn’t even a hint of the sun coming out yet– to go on a really long morning jog to try to get rid of her anxiety since she had promised her now wife she wouldn’t indulge on the thought of dying anymore. Not that Maya wanted to die either, she had much to live for now.
The blonde returned home once her legs started to give out and the sun was already up on the sky. She tried to be as quiet as possible as she took off her running shoes and slipped into the shower to get rid of all the sweat on her skin, hoping the warm water would also help to loosen her muscles a little.
The firefighter lost track of time as she stood underneath the artificial rain, head down, eyes closed, feeling the water hit her head and continue it’s journey down her body. All of the sudden, a pair of arms slithered from underneath hers and circled her waist, startling her and almost making her jump. She was so lost in thought that she hadn’t hear Carina come into the bathroom or even get undressed.
“Carina, you scared me.” Maya confessed the obvious, placing her hands on top of the doctor’s, lacing their fingers together over her stomach.
The Italian rested her chin on her wife’s shoulder and turned slightly to press her lips on the wet skin of Maya’s neck. “I could tell.” She chuckled. “Mi dispiace, amore mio. It’s just that you were taking too long in the shower and I wanted to check on you.”
The blonde sighed, her eyes still closed, throwing her head back to rest on Carina’s shoulder, giving her more access to her neck at the same time. “I’m sorry if I woke you up.”
The brunette pushed the firefighter a step further into the shower so the water could fall over her too and not just on Maya. That made the blonde smile, as she felt Carina’s front pressed flush against her back.
“You didn’t wake me up, don’t worry.” The OB said, followed by another kiss, this time on Maya’s shoulder. “A penny for your thoughts?”
The blonde chuckled, brushing her thumbs on Carina’s knuckles. “You’re getting better at American idioms.”
The doctor snorted and nipped at her wife’s shoulder softly. “Mhmm.” She hummed. “Some don’t make much sense but I find this one appropriate for the moment.”
Maya let out a long breath and nodded softly. “Yeah… it is.”
The Italian remained several seconds in silence, giving the other woman a chance to sort out her thoughts.
“Are you thinking about going back to the station?” She finally asked, even though she knew the answer.
Maya had originally asked for a week off after their wedding to have a small ‘honeymoon’ at home but after the announcement of her demotion, SFD had suspended her for two more weeks to conduct a sham of an investigation on the incident. Since the kid had survived and there was no lawsuit, Maya was told by the brass that she could return to work at the station as a lieutenant but that she would be on probation, claiming that they could not tolerate insubordination.
Maya opened her eyes briefly and lifted an arm to turn the water off. “It’s gonna be weird to go back…” She stayed in silence for a moment, chewing on her bottom lip. “And I’m not talking about my office no longer being my office or going back to do chores, I don’t care about that. I’m worried that I’ll start second guessing myself, being afraid to make a decision fearing the repercussions. I’m afraid of screwing up again, of making a bad call.”
Carina pressed her lips once more on the blonde’s shoulder and tightened her grip around her. “You didn’t screw anything up before and you are not gonna do it now.” Another kiss, this time on her neck. “You didn’t make a bad call. The decision that saves lives is always the right one.” A kiss behind Maya’s ear. “You are an excellent firefighter, bambina, and if they don’t see that, that’s on them.”
Maya couldn’t help but snort, humorlessly so. “But what if that gets me fired this time?” She asked, brow furrowed at the thought of losing her job.
“Well, I’m more than happy and capable of supporting the both of us. You can be my showcase wife.” The doctor playfully said and the blonde could feel her smile against her skin.
“Your what?” Maya sniggered, stretching her neck so she could look at her wife’s face.
The OB’s nose crinkled as she tilted her head back too to look into Maya’s beautiful cerulean eyes. “You know, like, when rich, old men have really beautiful, younger wives who don’t work and have an unlimited credit card?”
The firefighter closed her eyes as she started giggling. “You mean a ‘trophy wife’?”
The brunette rolled her eyes and chuckled. “You understood, didn’t you?”
“I mean, sure but I think I rushed to say you’re getting better at idioms.” The blonde teased with an arched brow and a small smirk.
Carina scoffed at those words, moving one of her hands away from Maya’s stomach to smack her on her hip. “Shut up.” At the same time, her other hand reached for the bottle of body wash and squirted some on her other hand after smacking Maya.
“I already did that.” The blonde let her wife know, moving one of her hands back to touch Carina’s thigh.
Again, Maya felt Carina’s smile over her skin. “Lo so. I can smell it on your skin.” She traced a path from the blonde’s shoulder to her neck and the back of her ear with the tip of her nose. “But I want to touch you and water is not slippery enough.” She whispered as she rubbed the body wash on both hands, creating a little bit of foam.
The firefighter sighed, content. She closed her eyes and rested her head on Carina again, letting herself enjoy her wife’s ministrations.
The Italian started to caress Maya’s stomach, going up and down the hard abs the blonde had thanks to years and years of training. They weren’t prominent, the muscles were barely outlined but that was enough to turn Carina on just by looking at them. With her right hand, the brunette cupped the underside of Maya’s left breast before moving her hand down again, playing with her bellybutton.
The doctor moved her hands again, this time to her wife’s hips, digging her fingers on the skin, moving a little bit up each time. Her thumbs moved in circles at the base of her spine to get Maya to relax.
Carina planted another kiss and nip on Maya’s shoulder before placing her hands on the blonde’s waist and push her slightly away so she could work her way up her back, pressing her fingers at each side of her spine.
Maya couldn’t contain a quiet moan from escaping her lips when Carina reached her shoulders and started to massage the tension away, using her thumbs to rub the back of her neck and then going down her trapezium.
The doctor kept going for a few more moments before leaning into the blonde again. “Do you want me to wash your hair?” She whispered, grazing her teeth on the shell of Maya’s ear, making her shudder.
The firefighter nodded slowly, still intoxicated by the touch her lover provided. “Please.”
Still from behind Maya, the Italian reached for the faucet to turn the water on, both to wash the soap away from Maya’s skin and to get her hair wet again.
Once it was wet enough, Carina turned the water off once more and grabbed Maya’s chamomile shampoo, poured some on her hand and started to scrub the blonde locks gently, creating foam. Seconds later, she moved her hands up, burying her fingers on the wet hair and starting to massage her scalp in a gentle circular motion, moving from the sides of Maya’s head to the top and then to her nape.
The OB smirked to herself before grabbing a fistful of her wife’s hair and tug back, not quite gently but it wasn’t rough either.
“Mhmm, Carina…” The blonde moaned. “Don’t do that, I can’t be late for work today.”
The brunette giggled at her wife’s reaction, pleased. “Non ho potuto resistere, bella.” She placed her hands on Maya’s shoulders and made her turn around, smiling when the blonde rested her hands on her waist. They gazed into each other’s eyes for a minute, adoration clear in both their faces. “Tilt your head back and close your eyes.”
Maya did as she was told and Carina turned the water back on. She used her hands to rinse Maya’s hair faster and try to untangle it but didn’t miss the chance to touch her elsewhere to remove the shampoo foam from her body.
The Italian moved closer so the water stream fell on her too, pressing her chest against the firefighter’s. The blonde took that as her cue to lean in, digging her fingers into Carina’s hips when their lips met.
The brunette’s hands went to cup Maya’s neck as the kiss started to deepen, angling her face to the side to not hit her wife’s nose with her own.
When they finally pulled away, Carina rested her forehead on Maya’s as she brushed her jaw with her thumbs, the water still falling over them. “You are an incredible firefighter, Maya. You are smart, detail oriented, strong, and most importantly, you care so much.” She moved to kiss the blonde’s cheek and returned to her previous position. “You follow your instincts and you do what’s right because this is not just a job for you, it’s your life… and the life of whoever you’re saving. And you know that.” Carina kissed Maya’s other cheek. “You’re gonna do great today and every day after that. Because you’re Maya Bishop.”
Maya could almost feel the tears forming behind her eyes. No one had ever made her feel as loved as Carina did.
She opened her eyes and pulled back, waiting for Carina to meet her gaze. Once the doctor did, Maya spoke. “I love you, Carina.”
The corners of the Italian’s eyes crinkled because of how wide her smile was. “I love you, too.” She answered, her eyes shifting from Maya’s lips to her eyes.
The firefighter leaned in for a final kiss, just lips pressed against lips for a short second, and reluctantly put some distance between herself and her wife. “As much as I would love to stay here all day, I have to get going. I bet it’s getting late.” She moved away from the water stream and wrung out her hair.
“Yeah, you should hurry, bella. It was almost quarter past seven when I came in and we’ve been here a while.” The OB commented, grabbing her own body wash and her loofah to start scrubbing her skin.
Maya opened her eyes wide at Carina’s words. “What!? I gotta run!” She got out of the shower as quickly as she could without falling and started toweling herself off. She was almost out of the bathroom with her towel around her body when she hear Carina’s soft laughter which made her slow down for a second and turn to look at her. “Thank you.”
The Italian turned her head around to look at the blonde over her shoulder and offered her a small smile. “There’s nothing to thank for, bella.”
And with that, Maya rushed into their room, putting on whatever clothes she could find, hair still dripping and getting her shirt wet. She stepped out of the bedroom with her towel around her shoulders, one hand grabbing one end of the towel to get rid of the moisture of her hair and the other grabbing the backpack she always carried to work containing her cellphone, wallet, keys and other stuff.
Maya was in such a hurry that she didn’t even considered she would run into Andy as she exited the kitchen.
Andy had been crashing at their place for the last two weeks thanks to her fight with Sullivan. She would have been there since the day after the wedding if it was up to Maya but the Latina had insisted on giving the newlyweds some privacy like they had planned for their first week of marriage, crashing at Vic and Travis’ for a few days.
During Maya’s suspension, she had not crossed paths with her best friend in the mornings because Carina insisted she stayed in bed with her and who was Maya to say no to her wife? But today, she hadn’t expected to see Andy either considering she was running late. When they had lived together in the past, they didn’t go to work together all the time since Maya liked to go on her morning runs and Andy liked to sleep in as much as she could.
The blonde almost bumped into her friend but managed to stop a few inches away from her and Andy had reacted as well, taking a step to the side to avoid the collision.
The Latina looked at her friend’s state, her clothes a little askewed by how fast they had been thrown on and her hair was a mess. “Good morning, Maya. Had a nice shower?” She teased with a grin on her face and an arched eyebrow.
The blonde bit the inside of her cheek to keep herself from pouting. Then, she pulled the towel from around her shoulders and threw it to the table, knowing Carina would get it in the dryer later. “We were just showering.” She stated, pushing her hair back.
Andy chuckled and opened the door, turning around to see her friend as she placed her mask over her mouth and nose. “Just so you know, there’s no way I’m paying half the water bill next month. You and Carina have taken way too many showers lately.” She said and skipped away from her friend before she could do anything to her.
“Andy, shut up!” Maya scolded her friend with no real heat behind her words as she grabbed a fresh mask and closed the door of her apartment behind her.
