Chapter Text
It was a bright and beautiful day in Pelican Town. It was the very first day of spring. Other people would be standing out in the sunshine, appreciating the fresh air, but not Harvey. Harvey was stuck in the clinic. He didn’t mind all that much, he was used to it. Plus he had to be here in case there was an emergency. Or if Pam came in to complain about her allergies again. He knew what he was doing was noble, but he couldn’t help but be bummed that he’s missing out on such a gorgeous day. Maybe he could slip out after three, everyone knows he’s not in the clinic at that time. Still, it would probably get hotter in the afternoon than it is right now. His thoughts became idle as he slowly slumped into his arm. He would have missed the person coming in had it not been for the bell above the door. Harvey immediately shot up, preparing for the worst. However, it wasn’t a medical emergency. In fact, it was someone he didn’t recognize. He stared at the person, baffled. It wasn’t everyday that a very muddy character with equally as dirty leather work gloves stood in his doorway. You seemed to notice him staring and glanced down at your filthy boots,
“ Oh! Sorry about that. Let me just… “
You stepped outside again, holding the door open as you jumped and hopped. Harvey could hardly understand the circumstances until he noticed the chunks of dirt falling off the shoes. That was certainly a strange way of stomping off muck. The stranger walked back in, letting the door close. You gave a big grin as you trotted towards the counter. You leaned forward and held out your gloved hand.
“ I’m the new farmer, y/n! Great to meet you! “
The new farmer, huh? Now that he thinks about it, Mayor Lewis did say there would be a farmer coming to town. He had been so busy with work that he didn’t even have the time to think about it. But here you were. In his clinic. Holding out your extremely muddy gloved hand. Harvey glanced down, a look of apprehension clear on his face. The farmer must have noticed as you gave a sheepish look and slipped it off. It appeared cleaner than the glove that you were wearing, so he gently grabbed your hand. It was warm and firm. It didn’t seem to have that many callouses yet, but he could feel the beginning of them. The soft skin contrasted with the harsher blisters that started to form. It was strange, but not unpleasant especially since there was a comforting heat emanating from you. He realized that he was holding your hand longer than it was socially acceptable. He swiftly let go and held up his hand, laughing awkwardly. He hoped that the farmer couldn’t see the blush that was spreading over his face. He cleared his throat and began the spiel he gave all of his patients,
“ I’m Harvey, the local doctor. I perform regular check-ups and medical procedures for all of the residents of Pelican Town! It’s rewarding work… “
He wasn’t lying when he said that, but the exhaustion was evident on his face. He glanced at the farmer and noticed that you seemed worried. Were… Were you worried about him? You had only just met him. For some reason, that ruffled him. He couldn’t let you worry. He was the doctor, he should be the one that’s worried! He had to change the direction of this conversation,
“ I hope you find your own work equally rewarding in time. ”
The farmer seemed to perk up at that. Good, now you won’t fret about him. He didn’t understand why you would since you had only just met, but he didn’t want you to nonetheless. You waved him goodbye as you left the clinic, presumably going off to introduce yourself to others. Harvey couldn’t help but watch you leave. What a peculiar person. He had a feeling that things in Pelican Town were about to get much more interesting.
