Sunrise

Summary:

Yuuji's last sunrise.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

Yuuji sighed as he settled at the end of the wooden dock that overlooked the vast lake. Outlined miles in front of him were the lush forests and mountains surrounding the lake. It was still dark, the glow of the sun that was yet to rise was only a silhouette from beyond the outline of the forest but some of its glow caught in the dark waters that caused it to sparkle little by little.

Coming here was one of the best ideas he had and he was happy Sukuna was able to grant it to him.

He could hear incoming footsteps and feel the vibrations in the wood from the heavy footfalls followed by a brusque warning of “Don’t let your feet touch the water, brat. It’s cold.”

Yuuji leaned back, uncaring of the cold wood against his hands as he looked over his shoulder towards his tall boyfrie— ah, husband. Sukuna was his husband now. And he was Sukuna’s. In a very impromptu and spontaneous wedding yesterday. There weren’t even any rings. They just borrowed it from the elderly couple who was kind enough to let them use it and gave it back to them immediately after and now they were on their honeymoon.

“I’m not a big man like you, Suku,” Yuuji said, giggling. “My feet aren’t even touching the water.”

It was true, Yuuji’s legs from the knee down were dangling from the end of the dock but even when his bare feet were feet away from the water, he thinks they were already numb from the cold.

Sukuna scowled. “At least tuck it in. It’s fucking cold.”

Yuuji rolled his eyes but did as he was told, tucking his feet under him and immediately relishing at the warmth his clothes and own body heat (no matter how little) provided.

There was a gentle gust of wind, but it was still too cold at this hour and Yuuji found himself pulling the hoodie and jacket (both Sukuna’s) he was wearing tighter against him.

There was a huff from his husband (ah, he will never stop calling Sukuna that) who settled behind him, Yuuji between his legs. Sukuna arranged them so he could sit cross-legged on the dock and Yuuji was sitting on him instead of the cold wood. He maneuvered both of them so Yuuji was resting his back on Sukuna’s chest.

Not satisfied with that, Yuuji moved a little on Sukuna’s hold and angled himself so he was resting his side, instead of his back, on Sukuna’s chest and tucked his head at the crook of Sukuna’s neck. This way, Yuuji wouldn’t need to turn around to look at Sukuna, just turn his head to look at his husband and the incoming sunrise.

Sukuna then cupped both of Yuuji’s hands against his own and blew on them, warming them.

“Warmer?” Sukuna asked.

Yuuji smiled brightly at him and nodded.

Sukuna nodded, pulling the huge and thick comforter he brought over the two of them and kept the edges together with one hand to serve as a cocoon for both of them.

Yuuji settled against him and sighed. “Thank you, Suku. And thank you for bringing me here.”

There was a huff from the bigger man but he didn’t say anything, only pulled Yuuji closer and kissed the crown of his head.

It was silent between them as they waited for the sun to finally rise. Under the sheets, Sukuna found Yuuji’s hand and intertwined them, Yuuij’s other hand cupping Sukuna’s hand so his bigger one was inside Yuuji’s smaller ones.

Yuuji’s hand was bony against his muscular one, hell, Yuuji probably weighed a third of Sukuna’s entire weight at most, but Sukuna wouldn’t trade this for the world.

There was a small gasp of delight from the smaller man when the first rays of sunrise finally shone. Slowly, the dark lake, forests and mountains were getting their first dose of sunshine, shining and sparkling under the rays of the glorious star. In a short while, it would hit them. But Sukuna didn’t need that, his sunshine was in his arms right now.

Yuuji’s hands holding Sukuna’s tightened and Sukuna could see those golden orbs shining ever brightly at the sight in front of them. He turned that bright smile to Sukuna and whispered, “Thank you.”

Sukuna looked down on his brat and smiled, perhaps the gentlest one that had ever graced his face, but his brat deserved the whole world. More than it, if he had the choice.

Sukuna kissed Yuuji’s forehead, whispering, “You know I would do anything for you.”

A giggle. A chuckle. And their lips met for one chaste kiss.

They settled back again, Yuuji safely cocooned in Sukuna’s embrace, both with their eyes in front of them, watching as their surroundings was being engulfed in bright rays ever so slowly as if telling Sukuna it was giving him one last time.

“Suku.” A breathy whisper.

“Hm?”

“Let’s…raise a family here.”

A huff. “When I said I would do anything for you didn’t mean you would take advantage of my kindness, brat. But fine. Since you ask ever so nicely. We’ll build a big house here because we’re not having one fucking child. Fucking kid will die of loneliness, so siblings, a lot of them.”

“Mm-mm.”

“But this is a world where you can’t be pregnant so we’ll have to fucking adopt and I’m sure with just one smile from you, they’ll give you anything you want just like how you smiled at me and suddenly my life is not mine anymore, it’s yours.”

His response was a low, breathy giggle.

“So we’ll have what, ten kids? I’m fucking fine with that but we have to make sure the house is big enough for all twelve of us. And I’m gonna have to work extra hard coz obviously you’re gonna be staying at home with the smaller brats. And our kids are gonna have two dads but they’re gonna call you mom coz you’d rock that. ” He was rambling. He knows. But it was only the two of them there and Yuuji’s listening so he goes on. “You’re gonna be a great mom. The fucking greatest! And our children will adore you coz I’m gonna whoop them asses if they don’t.”

“Suku?” It was so quiet, barely even a whisper.

“Is there anything else you want to add in your long list of requests, brat?”

“I love you.”

The hold he had on the comforter was shaking but his other hand only held Yuuji’s hand tighter, even when Yuuji’s own grip was faltering.

“I love you, too. I love you so much. I love you until the end of this world. I love only you in this lifetime. I love you until the sun stops shining. I love you, Yuuji.”

And just as the first rays of sun finally caught them, Sukuna heard a sigh, one final breath from Yuuji.

The hands holding Sukuna’s hand went slack but Sukuna gripped it with his own, the weight of the other was heavy against him but Sukuna only pulled him close. Sukuna let go of the comforter, putting his hand on Yuuji’s head and burying his nose against pink locks.

He was still so warm and yet he was so…still.

Sukuna’s tears fell freely and his throat felt like it would clog but he did not stop. Because Yuuji needs to hear this. Because this would be the last time and he still had so many things to say to Yuuji, and so many things to do with Yuuji.

“I love you, I love you, I love you. Screw til death do us part because it won’t fucking stop me. I love you, in this lifetime, in another lifetime, in another universe, in another life. Wait for me, Yuuji. In the afterlife or when we get reincarnated, please wait for me. We’ll find each other again and I’ll love you all the same, if not more. So please, please, please, wait for me. I love you. Now, always, forever. I love you.”

The sun had fully shone on them, hitting them with its warm rays, but Sukuna only felt cold.

I’m gonna go cry now.
