Inhabiting Two Bodies

Summary:

Sometimes, you get a surprise.

It's a bad thing.

Notes:

This story is for SilverUtahraptor, without whose help in idea bouncing it would never have come to fruition, and for Writingfish (idraax) for creating Uchiha Seto. He is always a joy and a privilege to write.

The title of this story comes from this quote by Aristotle:

Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Izuna

Summary:

Izuna knows his family.

But he doesn't know them like this.

Chapter Text

Izuna wakes up to the sound of shouting, but it's not the usual kind of shouting.

That is Mito-hime's voice.

And Mito-hime never shouts.

He rubs his eyes blearily, stumbling out of Tobi's room and heading for the kitchen.

"Well, if you hadn't dropped the bowl we wouldn't have this problem!" Mito is kneeling on the ground, picking up the pieces of shattered ceramic, and she sounds annoyed.

Izuna looks around but the only other person in the room is Tobirama who is watching Mito-hime with an intensity that doesn't seem warranted.

Suddenly, Mito-hime flings up her hands in exasperation. "IT WAS FOR A FUCKING KATON OKAY! TO COOK THE RICE!"

Izuna blinks.

That doesn't sound like Mito-hime.

That sounds like nii-san.

Mito-hime is nii-san's soulmate?

"If you'll note, Mito doesn't have a katon infinity!" She pinches her nose, clearly frustrated.

And that's not nii-san.

Mito-hime has two soulmates? And they are both in her body?

Amaterasu-Ōmikami save him, the other phrasing sounds like Hashirama.

Mito-hime waves her hands wildly before picking up a piece of bowl and hurling it at the wall. "IT WAS FUCKING INSTINCT!"

And... that would be nii-san again.

Izuna sinks down next to Tobi at the table and leans against his husband's shoulder.

It's too early for this, and there's obviously going to be no breakfast unless he makes it himself. Tobi is too busy staring and he's not awake enough yet, so he may as well watch their brothers attempt and fail to cook rice.

It's so strange to see Mito-hime's body jerk in different directions, attempting to do different things simultaneously.

It is, of course, also utterly disastrous.

No wonder nii-san was so keen on having a peace treaty with the Senju for so long.

No wonder all of his efforts failed.

He and Hashirama work terribly together.

Izuna makes a mental note to never let them do it again. No joint missions for them. They'd probably kill each other by accident.

But, if nii-san is in Mito-hime's body then...

"Huh. This is why Nii-san has quiet days occasionally." It's a murmur, but Tobi hears it and wraps an arm around him. Izuna snuggles in to the embrace but a sudden thought penetrates his barely awake brain, making him jerk upright. "Wait... Mito-hime's been in our compound hasn't she?"

"Yes, it was how we knew what your clan would want during negotiations." Tobi smirks. It's an unfairly attractive expression on him.

Just for that, Izuna slumps forward and lets his face meet the table.

Great. Just great.

They had a spy in their home, and he never knew.

Argh.

Izuna rolls his head to the side so he can give his husband a narrow eyed glare. "Haven't you seen this before, then? Why aren't you stopping them? At this rate, there will be no food left in the house. They're on their third attempt already."

"Oh, yes. It never gets any less interesting however." Tobirama gets up, and Izuna pushes up into calloused fingers that stroke his hair away from his face. "You're right that I should go and save breakfast though. And the dishes."

"Ugh. Scientists." Izuna lets his eyes fall closed again.

He might as well sleep until the food is ready.

Whenever that is.
