Christmas Tree

Summary:

Two friends reminisce and watch their husbands at work.

Notes:

Both Jim and Spock are Jewish in this fic, if that's not clear!

Work Text:

"What a lovely view," Leonard sighed from where he sat, bundled up in a chair on the front porch, cradling a cup of hot Irish coffee. Snow had already coated the grass and covered the rooftops, with a promise of more tonight.

"Best view yet," Jim chuckled next to him, in the same condition with his own mug of coffee. It was normal for Jim to be over at their house around the holidays, especially for the holiday party Leonard threw in the middle of December.

They were both admiring their husbands hard at work at trying to get the Christmas tree into the house. Montgomery had been reluctant to call Jim and Spock to help because it was shore leave and the holidays, but eventually, they did and Jim and Spock got a fast transport to help with the tree. It was a pretty big one this year, and Spock was now assisting Montgomery and they worked together efficiently. Meanwhile, Jim and Leonard had basically done nothing but admire them all day, those strong men, looking so series as they worked together.

Jim and Spock didn't even celebrate Christmas, but they'd still offered to help their friends, which Leonard thought was so nice of them. Of course, it was good to see them after having weeks of shore leave. The Enterprise was scheduled for 6 months of repairs and so they were stationed on earth for the time being under mandatory rest and recuperation. Personally, Leonard thought it was nice not having to worry about dying redshirts or Jim's ability to get hurt within a 5 minute period. He had spent the last month and a half with Scotty in his family home, which was empty as everyone was spending the holidays down in Mexico. They'd make their way back to Scotland by the new year, but until then, Leonard and Montgomery and the whole house to themselves and they were taking advantage of it. "Looking good, love," Leonard cooed, blowing a kiss to the Engineer who only rolled his eyes. To Jim, he said, "I'm so glad you and Spock finally cut the tension and got married."

Jim just laughed. "We didn't just get married. It took years of friendship and years of partnership until one day I just asked him to marry me."

"I know," Leonard chuckled. "I was there for all of it, unfortunately."

"Hey, it's not my fault Spock didn't lock the closet," Jim laughed.

"God," Leonard groaned, smiling. "I want to bleach my eyes just thinking about that."

"Well, you've come a long way too! Look at you," Jim gestured to Leonard, wearing Montgomery's sweater and wrapped up in a hand-knit blanket. "I've never seen you so happy."

"I've never been so happy," Leonard said truthfully.

"We all had bets as to who would kiss who," Jim admitted after a moment, sipping his coffee smugly, and Leonard shot him with a shocked look, his face heating.

"Jesus," The doctor whispered after a moment. "Did everyone know except us?"

Jim shrugged, which was an obvious yes, his face upturned in a smirk.

"Well, we had bets on you and Spock too." Now it was Leonard's turn to be smug.

"Really?"

"Really."

"Wow," Jim let out an exhale, his breathe visible in the cold. He watched his husband with a sort of longstanding gentle fondness. "We were so young back then, we didn't know anything."

"No," Leonard agreed, his eyes finding Montgomery's and that familiar heat warmed his heart. "We did not."
