“How much time is left?”
“It’s been less than thirty seconds since you last asked me.”
“Which makes it…?”
“Joshua,” Donna snaps.
Josh kisses her the side of her head, reaching for her wrist so he can look at her watch. “I know you’re just lashing out because you’re nervous.”
Donna playfully knocks her shoulder into his, though she in truth she is nervous. They both are. Yes, they’re on the same page about wanting this, but they’ve barely been married three months and it’s all happening much faster than either of them expected.
He still has her wrist, intently watching the seconds tick by. “It’s time,” he whispers.
Donna picks up the plastic stick from the counter, hands shaking. She holds it out so they can both see and the world shrinks to just the two of them and this pregnancy test.
“Is that —?”
“I think so.”
“That’s definitely two lines.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes.”
Josh whoops and picks her up off the ground, spinning in a careful circle. They’re laughing and crying and kissing and for all the times Donna has allowed herself to imagine this moment, she never anticipated it would feel quite like this.
