“I do,” I said quickly, then told one of the investors Patrick complimented his cuff links. We side-eyed one another, unexpectedly making eye-contact. His expression was dismissive, silently barking at me ‘no, you don’t’ – as if his words, thoughts, feelings were incomprehensible to himself and everyone else, as if he was the only real person in the world and therefore did not exist.
