Work Text:

The second Goro walked through the door, he was hit with the scent of coffee. A warm feeling filled his chest as he entered the kitchen. There was Akira, waiting for him with a large grin. He held out a mug which Goro happily accepted.

"You're home awfully late," Goro couldn't help but snort. "I hope this doesn't become a habit."

"Don't worry," Goro took a sip of his coffee. Absolutely perfect, as usual although the slight taste of peppermint was a surprise. "I should be free soon. My project's ending in a few days, just in time for Christmas... and I was thinking of taking a break before I accept another."

"Still, you've been so popular lately," Akira pulled Goro closer after setting his own coffee aside. "You're going to make me jealous." There was an undertone to Akira's words that Goro couldn't quite grasp. He shook off the feeling when Akira began to pepper his jaw with kisses. Goro closed his eyes, relishing the feeling, the attention and love from Akira. "I don't want anyone to steal you away."

"I don't think you need to worry about that," Goro said as Akira moved his lips down to his neck. "One of the- ah- The benefits of working freelance. You're the only one who can tie me down."

"Tie you down huh?" Akira looked up at Goro with a smirk. "Why don't you show me how much you care then?" Goro grinned as Akira began to kiss him again. They hardly even made it to the bedroom.

When Goro walked through the door, their small apartment was the absolute picture of Christmas. A large smile made its way to his face when he saw the undecorated tree. He couldn't wait to put up the decorations with Akira.

"Honey, I'm home!" Goro called. He heard a chuckle from the kitchen and followed it. Inside was Akira, his hands and apron absolutely covered in flour while he worked on rolling out a dough in front of him. The smell of cookies drifted lazily through the air, getting stronger with each step. "I see you did some decorating while I was gone."

Akira looked up with a smile. "I had to find some way to keep myself busy while I wait for you."

"Well it looks beautiful," Goro grabbed Akira from behind before giving him a quick peck on the cheek. "And the cookies smell wonderful."

"Do you want one when they're ready? I made them for the party tomorrow but... I don't think having one or two would hurt."

Goro hummed as he leaned his chin on Akira's shoulder. He watched as he grabbed a cookie cutter shaped like a snowflake. "I'm sure the others wouldn't mind if we had a small sample."

"I'm happy you agree." Akira turned with a smile before giving him a playful tap on the nose. Goro could feel the flour from Akira's hands get on his face. Akira laughed out the sight while Goro drank in the sound, fully content.

When Goro entered the apartment on Christmas Eve, he didn't hear a single sound. Something about it gave him a bad feeling as he made his way to the kitchen where Akira usually waited. He wasn't there. Goro's heart sank in his chest.

"Akira," Goro called out, trying to ignore the awful feeling he had. "Are you home?"

Goro's question was met with a small sound from the bedroom. He frowned as he entered to see Akira sitting on their bed, scrambling to hide... something. It looked like... a photo maybe? He wiped his eyes as Goro approached. "Akira... Are you okay?"

"Y-Yeah!" Akira tried to put on a smile but Goro could see right through it. "Why wouldn't I be?"

"I don't know," Goro made his way to the bed. He took a seat next to Akira and pulled him close. "Why aren't you?"

"I'm fine! Really!" Goro shot him an unimpressed look. "I um... I'm happy you're home. Really... You have no idea how relieved I am to see you."

"Akira," Goro brought his hands to Akira's face. He wiped a stray tear with a frown. "Why were you crying?"

"I..." Akira shook his head, a sad smile on his face. "You wouldn't understand if I told you."

"Try me."

Akira looked at him for a moment before everything went fuzzy.

...

Goro walked through the door on Christmas Eve, he smiled when he heard Akira humming in the kitchen. A Christmas song he didn't quite recognize rang through the air. Goro watched him from the doorway, a small smile on his lips. When Akira finally noticed his presence, he smiled wide.

"You're home..." He quickly approached, pulling Goro close as soon as could reach him. "I missed you."

"I was only gone an hour..." An amused smile crossed Goro's face. "Are you really that desperate to be around me?"

"You have no idea."

On Christmas day, Goro woke up to find Akira clinging tightly to him. Goro smiled at his sleeping form. He was too cute... He ran his hands through his hair, smiling even wider when Akira began to adjust to lean into the touch.

When Akira woke up a short while later, he looked at Goro with a sleepy smile. "Merry Christmas," Goro whispered before placing a gentle kiss on his forehead. When he pulled away, he saw Akira's face drop. "What's wrong?"

"I... You're not going anywhere today, right?"

Goro chuckled. "Of course not..." He cupped Akira's cheek with a warm smile. "I'm all yours today."

"Good..." Akira buried his head in Goro's chest. "Good."

"Do you want to get up? I'm sure that Santa brought us a few presents last night."

Akira let out a strangled chuckle. "In a minute," He pulled Goro even closer as he spoke. "I just want to stay here while we can... We have plenty of time."

Goro chuckled as he began to run his hand through Akira's hair again. He was right, they had plenty of time. There was no need to rush, no matter what their Christmas would be absolutely perfect. How could it not when they had each other?
