Gender? In This Economy?

Summary:

Just Castiel answering the question, "What's your gender?" And giving a different answer every time.

Also, there is not a lot of Sastiel content in this fic, just a tad.

Notes:

I'm personally not a fan of the question, "What's your gender?" And neither is Castiel, they told me themselves. Which has led us to a compilation of Castiel answering this question.

I did use a lot of different pronouns for Castiel, and while pronouns and gender are not the same things I imagine Castiel not minding any pronouns. And while this fic is pretty jokey, please respect the pronouns used, they are not the joke.

The textpost this is based off of (this one is much longer):

Castiel: I lost it in Heaven, they refuse to let me back in.

Castiel: God forgot to give me one.

Castiel: They ran out of them at the store, as well as pie.

Castiel: I don't know I just follow the bees.

Castiel: Trenchcoat.

Castiel: I wasn't informed I needed to bring one. Sam? Do you have an extra one I can borrow?

Castiel: I gave mine to the Winchesters.

Castiel: Yes.

Castiel: Angel blade.

Castiel: I don't remember, I blame Naomi.

Castiel: Protect the Winchesters.

Castiel: I lost it as well as my wings.

Castiel: I traded it for a PB and J. I was hungry.

Castiel: I lost my gender around the same time I lost my grace.

Castiel: This vessel didn't come with two, Jimmy took his with him.

Castiel: I had to remove it to hide the angel tablet.

Castiel: The Leviathans ate it.

Castiel: When I met Dean it was offended by the stabbing and left.

Castiel: It was jealous when I shook Sam's hand and left with Uriel, he died with it.

Castiel: I left it in the Empty.

Castiel: I'll interrogate the cat.

Castiel: I'm older than genders.

Castiel: Why, have you seen it?

Castiel: I'm an angel.

Castiel: Did you lose yours?

Castiel: Is that a pop culture reference?

Castiel: 7?

Castiel: The pizza man didn't teach me that. Perhaps I've done something wrong.

Castiel: I think I lost it in Hell when I tried to save Sam. I may be wrong.

Castiel: No.

Castiel: A demon took it.

Castiel: I take back 7. 9?

Castiel: This talk is pointless.

Castiel: Have you seen my partner? He has beautiful hair.

Castiel: Your guess is as good as mine.

Work Text:

"My gender?" Castiel asked, "I lost it in Heaven. They refuse to let me back in." True story. Castiel was simply too powerful to have it.

Castiel sighed, "God forgot to give me one." They looked down at their hands, "Instead, I have morality dilemmas on a daily." Silence fell between the questioner and Castiel.

"Do you want one? I have plenty to spare." The questioner politely declined.

"They ran out at the store. As well as pie." Castiel motioned for them to come closer and whispered, "I believe there is a connection." It looked around, "Don't tell anyone."

"I don't know. I follow the bees." Xe said looking out past the horizon, "They don't know either. They're bees."

"Trenchcoat," Castiel said patting her coat with a nod.

Castiel looked alarmed, "I wasn't informed I needed one, Sam?"

"Hmm?" Sam hadn't been paying attention.

"Do you have an extra gender I can borrow?" Sam looked a little confused, "I didn't bring one." Castiel clarified.

Sam looked around, "You can have mine?"

That's how they ended up sharing their gender.

"I gave mine to the Winchesters." Castiel leaned in closer, "It was divided unevenly. Sam got the bigger piece." It's true, Adam also managed to get a bigger piece than Dean. Dean is unaware.

"Yes." Truthfully, yes.

"Angel blade." Castiel showed them, indeed, angel blade. Good gender.

"I don't remember. Can I blame..." Ze thought about it, technically ze still has no clue what Naomi tampered with, "I think I can. I blame Naomi." In all fairness, it probably was Naomi. Or Chuck. Could have been a team effort.

Castiel answered before the sentence was fully out, "Protect the Winchesters." Bad gender in the sense of survival. You will die.

Castiel looked in the far distance, "I lost it. I also lost my wings." Void whispered in a conspiracy voice, "Do you think my wings were my gender?" The person shrugged, wings are very gender but were they void's gender? Who is to say?

Castiel sighed, "I traded it for a PB and J." The hunter looked very confused, "I was hungry." That didn't clear up any confusion, it simply added to it, "They needed some gender. I needed food. It wasn't a fun exchange." There was a nod exchange but for different reasons. Very different reasons.

Castiel was staring up at the clouds, "I lost my gender about when I lost my grace, is my gender in my grace?" A sigh followed his question. "Is grace gender or is gender grace?" A good question that I cannot answer and neither could the frog Castiel had asked. The frog didn't question his gender, Castiel was just ignoring Chuck.

Castiel shook its head, "This vessel only came with one gender." It opened its trenchcoat as proof, it was empty. Like Castiel's gender. "Jimmy took his with him." Castiel shrugged, "He wouldn't lend it to me." Jimmy also didn't lend his pronouns, Sam did though.

Castiel phased a hand through ver body, "I had to take it out to make room for the angel tablet." Ve pulled out air, "They didn't both fit. I am unsure where I left my gender and the tablet isn't here anymore." At least Castiel's gender wasn't stolen.

"The Leviathans ate it." Castiel was not the only victim of losing their gender to the Leviathans. Dick was truly a dick, taking people's gender and identities. Didn't even offer to share.

"I had it, but when I met Dean and he stabbed me," Castiel paused for dramatic effect.

Dean interrupted though realizing where this was going, "Not this again."

"When he stabbed me, it was very offended and left. It hasn't come back since." Dean grumbled about how that is not what happened and that he doesn't understand why Castiel keeps saying this. Castiel continues to say it because it's funny.

Castiel was smiling, "I met Sam, and when I shook his hand," Sam was listening intently, wondering what this had to do with gender, "it got jealous and left with Uriel. Uriel died with it."

"What?" Sam started to laugh at the idea and the bluntness. Castiel likes to tell this story because of Sam's laughter.

"I left it in the Empty." Castiel said, "Not on purpose, I set it down and lost it." Ae sighed, "There was no return system either, so." Maybe the Empty has Castiel's gender now.

"I'll interrogate the cat, he knows more than he lets on." Which I'd agree with if there was a cat. Castiel simply left.

Castiel frowned, "I'm older than genders. And you." That's all that was said, the questioner left very shortly after.

"Why? Have you seen it?" Castiel asked, patting itself down, "It likes to escape." It wasn't in its pockets anymore.

"I'm an angel." Castiel looked pointedly at the app, "Does that apply to me?" All Castiel got was a shrug from Jack.

"Did you lose yours?" Castiel sighed, shaking aer head, "Don't take a loan for a new one, the interest rates are devastating." Sam looked back at Castiel in confusion, how does ae know about interest rates? Ae refused to tell Sam.

"Is that a pop culture reference?" Castiel asked distractedly. They were trying to listen to the radio that was a mile away. It was better than the conversation she was currently having.

"Seven?" It was very hesitant. Was that a good number? As a number, overrated but as a gender? Underrated, Castiel decided.

"The pizza man didn't teach me that," Castiel said without blinking. "Perhaps... I have done something wrong." That was apparently the wrong answer. Castiel felt like it was a great one, especially being asked it three times that day by the same person.

Castiel tilted his head, "I might have lost it in Hell when I was trying to save Sam." Thinking back to it… "I may be wrong but I think I dropped something." Sam looked at Castiel, did- did Castiel drop his soul or???

"No." Agreed.

Castiel leaned back, "A demon took it." Void's hands tapping each other as comfort, "When I killed the demon I killed my gender." Void sighed, "It was a sad day." For the demon, Castiel didn't like the gender if void was honest.

Castiel sounded confident in saying, "I take back seven," but there was a pause. "My gender is nine?" A lot less confident with the new number. Back at square one, it seems.

"This talk is pointless. As is all talk technically, but this one especially." Castiel clarified not wanting to be mistaken, "I don't like you." Chuck looked very done with the conversation and Castiel.

"Your guess is as good as mine." Castiel responded, "Or better. I don't understand genders." Castiel did understand genders, just not the fascination of why people insist on knowing other people's. The idea that they must know, as if entitled to it, that confused Castiel to great lengths.

"Have you seen my partner?" Castiel asked, "He has beautiful hair."

There was an awkward pause. Not for Castiel though.

"We asked about your gender?" The pair were looking at each other wondering if they asked the question correctly or not.

Castiel waited for some elaboration, there was none. "And?"

"You didn't answer."

"Neither did you." Castiel pointed out, "Have you seen Sam's hair?" Who cares about gender when Sam's hair could be talked about?

"Yes?" Now the conversation is worth having!

Castiel smiled, "It's very nice hair."

"Your gender?" They tried again.

"No thank you," Castiel said walking away. "I don't have credit."

Notes:

I hope you enjoyed this, it's not my usual writing style at all but it was fun to write. Wait, this is technically a humor fic, isn't it? I didn't think I'd ever write one because I mean I can be funny but in small doses. Huh.

Also, I tagged this as Sastiel just so no one can claim this as Destiel. I've had that happen on Tumblr when the entire post is about Sastiel. I don't know why people do that but yeah, just wanted to make it clear.

All comments/criticisms/feedback are welcomed like usual. If you found any mistakes please let me know it's greatly appreciated so I can fix them! Thank you for reading, I wish you a good day!
