The Love of a Goddess (Sothis Children Headcanons)

Summary:

My random headcanons for the beings that were later turned into the Relics by Nemesis and the Agarthans, as well as backstory for the Nabateans we meet in canon. To be used in conjunction with 'The Lone Wolf, The Philanderer, and the Ashen Demon' series where Sothis connection is reestablished and Macuil and Indech fight beside the former students of the Academy to end Edelgard's war and rid themselves of the Agarthans.

Work Text:

*Seiros (First-born)- Bigger than the other children in her dragon form, dwarfed only by Sothis, herself. Gleaming white scales, just like canon. Never took any human companions in Sothis’ time, purely out of lack of interest. Her family, and especially her relationship with her mother, was her main priority. Seiros was often left in charge of things in Zanado when Sothis went away to meet with the human leaders or desired time on her own—something that happened rather frequently.

Her brothers and sisters respected her as the eldest, though a few of Sothis’ children begrudged her the time alone she frequently had (stole) with Sothis. When Sothis’ body was desecrated, she took it upon herself to take charge over her siblings. She initially wished to stay away from the humans, blaming them for her mother’s extended sleep and the fact that her body was desecrated. But after her vengeance against Nemesis was achieved, she saw the way that Wilhelm and the other humans looked to her for her leadership and her wisdom, and she knew… she knew that this was what Mother would have wanted her to do. Sothis would have wanted her to lead the humans. They needed guidance, needed her.

Recently, her dragon form has weakened, almost looking as if she were decaying around her mouth and wings due to all of the blood she has given away.

*Macuil- It is widely told that Cichol was the first to fall in love with a human, but that is not the whole truth. Cichol was not the only son of Sothis drawn to humankind in the beginning, for Macuil often found his way to his mother’s side as she traveled through the human civilizations. During one such expedition, Macuil met Thalia, the princess of Septum. Macuil was always more reserved in his passions, but he found her beautiful and cunning; and cunning she was, but her father thought himself even more so. Noticing Macuil’s infatuation with his daughter, Thalius, King of Septum ordered her to make him fall in love with her, that they might benefit from and learn more of the Nabatean’s power.

Unfortunately, their plan did not work to the extent that they would have hoped. Macuil came to know of their trickery—hearing of the falsehoods from Thalia’s own mouth, no less (really should have been more mindful of the greater range of hearing). Macuil flew off in a heartbroken rage, but the damage had already been done. Thalia was the first human to bare a half Nabatean child, and Thalius learned that the weight of Sothis’ attention was not all it was cracked up to be.

It immediately became clear that the child was not human, possessing power over ice and not aging as he should. Thalius demanded that Sothis bless him and his household with her gift of longevity, for surely he had earned such a gift—his daughter had borne her a grandchild. Sothis refused and took the child away to Zanado, making a rule amongst her children that no royal blood would be blessed with her own. And that is how the kingdom of Septum became the first of Sothis’ (quiet) enemies.

*Cichol- The first to fall in love with a human (to the extent of wishing to spend longer than a lifetime with them) and seek Sothis’ guidance on the matter. Sothis created the ‘Erotas bond’ with Cichol and his beloved in mind. Briesif was the daughter of an innkeeper in what is now called Enbarr, no one particularly special. Cichol was travelling on his own in human form and sought lodging in their inn, not sharing who he was. They met together frequently in a church that worshipped his mother and the two slowly got to know each other, though Cichol didn’t share the truth about himself initially. He knew it would merely cause a scene, and he was curious about humans. (More on this within the story.)

A winged emerald dragon, Cichol had the ability to manipulate the earth with great precision. Unfortunately, due to threats of danger to himself and his daughter, Cichol has locked away such powers within himself, as well as his dragon form.

*Indech- It is said that Saint Indech was unable to open his heart to others, but the truth of such matters is not so easily explained. Indech was always far more reserved in comparison to his other brothers and sisters, but he cared deeply for each of them. The introduction of humankind to their beloved canyon presented a challenge for Indech, for he appreciated the peace that came with being alone with his family, but he shared his mother’s fondness for the humans.

Indech was not quick to friendship nor love, given his preference toward solitude. Rare were the times when a human caught his attention and held it, but those times did come. However, Indech was not like some of his other siblings, and the humans that held his affections were not like their mates. Love came in seasons for Indech, and when the season passed with the human that had caught his fancy, he cherished the memories that he created with them and thought fondly upon them in his solitude.

Maurice was another such human that caught his attention, with his haunted eyes and a troubled past, lost along a path that initially held good intentions. Indech’s fondness grew, as did Maurice’s, the bond between them only becoming stronger with time and experiences shared. However, Macuil held great resentment for the humans. Cichol felt it was dangerous, that Maurice could not be trusted. “Think of what he’s done, Indy. Think of who he cast his lot with. Surely humans never truly change!” Seiros never thought matters of the heart held much value, but especially in her grief-filled rage, it held no sway. “Vengeance. Think of our brothers, our sisters. They must have peace, Indech. We must have Mother back.”

And in the end, it didn’t matter… for Maurice was lost to him. Just like all the others.

*Cethleann (daughter of Cichol and Briesif)- Only daughter of Cichol and Briesif, Cethleann was the second half human/half Nabatean child to be born. She was still very young (by Nabatean standards as well as physically) when the Great War started and Cichol and his family were pulled back to Zanado for their own safety. As such, she remembers her childhood of being raised in war as living amongst her family; aunts, uncles, cousins, and Sothis’ supporters.

Cethleann is the only remaining half human/half Nabatean child and as such there is not much that is known about how they develop. Her biology is different from that of a Nabatean in that she lacks a ‘Crest Stone’ and thus does not have a direct tie to Sothis’ power within her. Her long sleep after the War of Heroes was especially nerve-wracking for Cichol because no Nabatean had ever slept so long (aside from Sothis, after restoring the continent). He was not certain she would ever wake up.

*Athelon (Crest of Timotheos)- He/Him. Very rarely walked about in his human form. Dragon form resembled a Giant Wolf, including the fact that he had fur that covered most of his body. Had the ability to summon and commune with animals. (The power was passed down to Timotheos through his blood, and made out of control within Hapi due to Cornelia’s tampering.) Did not interact with human’s very frequently, due to his ‘wilder’ nature.

*Nephis/Nephi (Crest of Aubin)- She/Her. Had the power of teleportation, which can now be harnessed through the Fetters of Dromi. Nephi’s powers came in handy when the time came that Sothis’ children traveled away from the canyon to settle in other parts of the world. Sothis utilized Nephi’s talents as a messenger or transporter when she had need of one of her other children, but as I’m certain you could sympathize, Nephi didn’t always appreciate being the errand runner.

Brilliant (as well as patient in her near-divinity) Nephi made it her business to learn anything and everything, collecting whispers from every part of the world she visited. She was a font of knowledge, but that knowledge always came with a price. If you were lucky, she would strike a deal with you. If you weren’t, well… there weren't many places you could hide when Nephi was the being searching for you.

*Azaria- She/Her. Often referred to as the Bloom Dragon, Azaria bore the gift of manipulating plant life. Flowers were her favorite, and she was often seen decorating her hair with vines that weaved about her body. She also studied/discovered the uses of various plants for the purpose of healing and/or relief of other ailments. (Such as using specific herbs to help keep one calm or invigorate them, like Rhea’s Herbal Remedy quest in canon.)

She loved to travel often, finding new forms of plant life that she could grow and work with. She was nurturing in nature, and Sothis was very fond of her desire to help humans by passing along the knowledge of plants that she had, such as which would be beneficial and which were dangerous and should be handled with care.

Her bonded mate, Hegra, was a daughter of Brigantia (Brigid) that Azaria met during one of her many trips to the small nation. Hegra was actually a princess, though to circumvent Sothis’ rule, she agreed to give up her claim to the throne and instead live out her life as a mate to one of Sothis’ children. Tales are still told in Brigid of their love, which spanned many generations and ‘blessed their land’. They would frequently visit the island, bringing news of Fodlan and the latest advancements in their knowledge of plant-life to help the people.

*Thalter, son of Macuil (Crest of Chevalier)- He/Him. Born of the princess of Septem and Macuil, he had the gift of ice magic. (Notably the only half Nabatean/half human to be born with such a gift.) After the princess and her family were denied Sothis’ gift of extended lifespan, Thalter was brought by Sothis to live in Zanado. Thalter was a beautiful babe, with hair a shade lighter than Macuil’s and the same regal features. Macuil loved the boy with his whole heart, raising him amongst his brothers and sister who doted on the babe despite the circumstances of his birth.

The eldest of the half dragon/half human children, his abilities to transform and regenerate were highly contested within the community until he finally transformed. Unfortunately, he never had a chance to realize the full extent of his power, having been killed in the Massacre.

Macuil etches Thalter’s Crest sign into every weapon he forges in memory of his son; the ghost that still haunts him, even now.

*Oluja (Crest of Maurice)- She/Her. Had the power to control the weather. Often, when she was upset, it would trigger her powers. Due to this fact, she was very mindful of her emotions. Sothis taught her many techniques surrounding mindfulness and meditation, and she spread those abilities wherever she went.

Oluja loved to travel everywhere, within Fodlan and without. She never settled anywhere for long as her brothers and sisters tended to. She would travel from village to village, city to city, helping those that struggled with their crops for a season before moving on. Sothis would tell you she bore an “adventurous soul”. She never had a human partner that extended their lifespan, though she remembered those that had passed on with much fondness.

*Brom (Crest of Dominic)- He/Him. Had the ability to shake the earth beneath his feet (i.e. could cause earthquakes). His powers were not as focused as Cichol’s, who could manipulate the earth far more precisely. Good-natured, though perhaps a bit too competitive, Brom was always raring for a fight.

Once, when he was young, Brom tried to level a mountain, just to see if he could do it. He could, though he was devastated when said efforts resulted in a landslide that wiped out a human village on the other side. Sothis turned back time to save them, of course, and after the scolding of the century, Brom was far more careful with his gift.

*Rayjala (Crest of Fraldarius)- She/Her. Considered invulnerable to weapons in both forms until the Massacre, and was consequently the last to fall in Zanado at Nemesis’ hand whilst trying to help Indech and Macuil flee. (Could only be cut down due to the Sword of the Creator being made from Sothis’ spine.) Rayjala was fiercely protective of her siblings and the others that dwelt within Zanado’s embrace. Her dragon form bore spikes along the ridges of her spine and her sternum was magically compressed in order to be made into the Aegis Shield.

Rayjala never took a bonded mate. Her interests lay more in the fighting arts and protecting those she cared about. She wasn’t particularly fond of humans after what happened to Macuil, anyway. She accepted those that were brought into their family through the Erotas bond and Sothis' blood, but that was the extent of her personal interaction with humankind.

*Elmis (Crest of Gautier)- She/They. Had the ability to manipulate her dragon form to suit her needs, and could maintain a controlled transformation (i.e. could sprout wings, scales, etc. even in her human form). Macuil theorized that the Wild Demonic Beasts that still roam the continent were created from animals that came in contact with the earth where her blood was spilled.

And one cannot bring up Elmis without speaking of *Cember (Crest of Daphnel) with their next breath. He/They. Cember bore the power to control and produce flames. Cember was the charisma to Elmis’ cunning, and together they traveled the world hand in hand, seeking out all that could possibly excite them. Tales were spun of the ageless twins — for it was said passersby could hardly tell the one from the other — powerful children of Sothis who walked the land searching for the most beautiful, the most talented, the most cunning of humans. Many dreamed of traveling beside them, of drinking from their vast fount of knowledge and partaking with them of the exquisite pleasures the world had to offer.

*Pelegius (Crest of Blaiddyd)- He/Him. Had super strength in both forms. The gentlest of giants, but only through great care on his part. Like Dimitri and the rest of the Blaiddyd line, Pelegius broke many things by accident, especially when he did not have a handle on his emotions. He shrugged it off on the surface, always portraying a sense of confidence and inner strength to others that he often didn’t feel himself.

Pelegius had a cave deep within the canyon that he would often retreat to. He was far more introverted, though not nearly to the extent that Indech was. He tended to withdraw out of frustration, impatient with his own “accident prone” nature and in need of a break. Sothis would often find him when he was in those moods. She would sing to him, often in the hopes that he would join her. Pelegius had a lovely voice, and he was incredibly shy about this fact.

Too nervous about his own strength, he rarely spent quality time with humans. His brothers and sisters healed easily, but humans? He wouldn’t risk harming someone. As such, he never had a bonded mate. Many cared for him, but he never allowed himself to return their feelings.

*Ichor (Crest of Gloucester)- They/Them. Widely considered the smartest of the bunch — though it was often a point of contention with Macuil — Ichor was an inventor, and spent the majority of their time locked away in their workshop in human form, tinkering. They worked with Macuil to design the Holy Tomb, as well as the golems within. By far the smallest amongst the dragons, though they didn’t mind it too much. Power wasn’t something they sought after, only knowledge. Indech was very fond of Ichor and their quiet presence, and it was not uncommon to see the two working together on their projects side-by-side.

*Freidawin/Frei (Crest of Goneril)- She/Her. Possessed super speed in both forms, and was particularly fond of swimming with Indech in her dragon form. She and her bonded partner, Aaergorn, lived within Zanado’s embrace when they met Nelke and fell in love with her. Together, the three of them had three children (only one of them half Nabatean). Frei was a doting mother and did much for Zanado’s community, receiving offerings from humans that would make pilgrimage to the canyon and regaling countless more of Sothis’ teachings.

Frei was particularly keen on the idea of returning to the surface when Seiros kept them below ground following the desecration of Sothis’ body. She wished to help the humans restore Fodlan to its former glory rather than keep amongst themselves and withhold their gifts. In the end, she and her partners died trying to help their children and many others escape the massacre.

*Schissem (Crest of Charon)- He/Him. “Most virtuous,” Cichol would tell you. Macuil would counter “most self-important” but that was neither here nor there. Schissem had the power of electrical manipulation, including but not limited to producing lightning in both of his forms, as well as funneling currents through the earth to shock his enemies. Took Sothis’ teachings of the importance of helping humankind to heart and hung on his mother’s every word.

Fell in love with one of the men who moved into the canyon to devote himself to Sothis’ teachings. Schissem pursued Aaert’s affections for nearly a decade before they began to see each other, and Aaert agreed to partake of Sothis’ blood soon after. They were officially bonded to great fanfare within the canyon, and many of Sothis’ children traveled home to partake in the festivities and meet their newly bonded brother.

*Stjerne (Crest of Riegan)- She/Her. Fondly referred to as “my Star” by Sothis, Sterjne’s scales glowed when she was in her dragon form. She could manipulate light, and though she was opposed to fighting, her ability to blind her enemies was considered a great tactical advantage. She could fly in her dragon form, and she enjoyed night flights with her mother, especially when Seiros was ordered to stay home.

She was beautiful, with hair and eyes the loveliest shade of pale green that glowed even on the darkest of nights. She was also terribly vain, using said beauty to make countless humans fall in love with her. Once, she made a powerful king fall in love with her just to garner Sothis’ attention, knowing of her mother’s rule against using her gifts to extend the lives of rulers. (see: Macuil) Even if many of her brothers and sisters found her a touch conceded, all saw the beauty she held and could appreciate the beauty she saw in the world around her.

Changed greatly after the desecration of Sothis’ body, impacted by her grief over the loss of her mother. Genuinely wished to go out and aid the humans once more as she believed their mother would have wished them to, and resented Seiros for trying to take up Sothis' mantle. It’s said that she cried out for Sothis with her last breath.

*Ioannis (Crest of Lamine)- They/Them. A powerful sorcerer, skilled in many forms of magic. Very close with Macuil, and part of the reason that the grouchy elder brother is so interested in the magical arts now. Ioannis and Macuil created the specters that guarded the Holy Tomb together, as well as many other forms of spell work that were used within and without the Nabatean civilization.

Known to be remarkably empathetic, sometimes to their own detriment. Sothis theorized it was the reason Ioannis was so skilled with magic, having an intimate knowledge of the inner workings of people spawned an innate gift for sorcery.

Ioannis had a bonded mate, Razael, and after the Cataclysm they lived a quiet life together in a village nestled in the mountains along Fodlan’s eastern border. That is, until Sothis’ body was desecrated and they moved back to the canyon to be close to Ioannis’ brothers and sisters.

Of course, these are not all of Sothis’ children, merely the ones we know of due to the fact that they were turned into Relics that were then wielded by the Ten (Eleven) Elites as well as the two passed down from the Apostles. The Agarthans went after those that had special gifts, such as the children listed above. Many of Sothis’ other children did not have any sort of special power, though they did have strengths in certain types of magic as well as being stronger and faster than humans naturally.

After being killed in the Red Canyon, their bodies were also desecrated; their blood, their hearts, and their bones taken to be used in the Agarthan’s cursed experiments.
