    The candle flame was small and yellow, a pale blue where it met the wick. They danced for Suguru, twisting and flickering, until they doubled and tripled, linking together into a chain of winking lights. Then, they settled back into their rightful shapes, leaving Suguru with a chill that walked all over his back.

    Suguru shivered. It was probably the windows in the living room - he could hear cars and someone’s dog howling through the fluttering curtains.

    “Ready?”

    Suguru rubbed his eyes. He gave his parents a reassuring smile, then nodded excitedly. He couldn’t wait to see what presents his parents had got him that year. He had been a very good boy.
