Work Text:
If you asked Kokichi if there was anything he disliked about his wonderful boyfriend Shuichi Saihara, his reply would most likely be “Of course not nishishi~ My beloved Shumai is the most incredible person in the world!”
And that of course was true. Shuichi was the best person he had ever met. He was kind, caring, intelligent, and of course, absolutely gorgeous. He was the light of his life, his reason for getting up every morning, his soulmate, his everything, even if he would never admit it out loud.
But to say there wasn’t anything he disliked about him would be a flat out lie. There was one thing he despised about his beloved more than anything else in the entire world.
Shuichi always hid his smiles.
It was truly a crime, that a smile so beautiful was always hidden behind one of Shuichi’s admittedly gorgeous hands, or hidden from view when Shuichi turned to look at the floor instead of his clearly smoking hot and worthy of attention boyfriend. Through the nearly eight months that the two of them had been dating, Kokichi had only seen Shuichi smile enough times that he could count them on his fingers.
And he just really wanted that to stop. He wanted to see those plump, kissable pink lips quirk up into a grin, see the corner of Shuichi’s bright gold eyes crinkle at the edges.
And he would do anything to achieve that goal.
———
His first attempt occurred on one of their dates. The two of them had decided to go to a small cafe after school, ordering some hot cocoa to warm them up from the harsh winter weather outside. They sat across from each other, talking and laughing like there was no tomorrow, their fingers interlocked across the table.
And right then, with Shuichi sitting right across from him, staring into his eyes, Kokichi knew he had to take the shot.
“You make me so happy Shuichi,” he said earnestly, rubbing his thumb across the back of Shuichi’s hand interlocked with his. “I’m the luckiest man on the planet.”
Unfortunately, his honesty only earned him a rosy blush hidden behind his boyfriend’s cocoa mug, not a smile in sight.
Attempt 1: Fail.
———
Right before school, that was the perfect time. Snow fluttered down around them in small little flurries, Kokichi was wearing his cutest little coat, and his cheeks were rosy pink from the cold. There was no way Shuichi wouldn’t smile when he saw him.
“SHUMAAAAIIIIII!!!!” Kokichi cried as he jumped towards his boyfriend, the taller boy screeching before he dropped the bag he was holding in favor of catching his tiny boyfriend. Kokichi snuggled into Shuichi, tucking his head into the warm crook of Shuichi’s neck. He peered up at Shuichi with doe eyes, giggling when Shuichi’s face turned a pretty shade of pink.
“Good morning my beloved Shushi~” he cooed. “Isn’t it a wonderful day? I’m so happy today, especially since I got to see my beloved at school! Doesn’t that make you soooooo happy?”
Shuichi simply hummed in agreement, leaning down to give his boyfriend a kiss on the nose. Kokichi could feel himself start to blush, and he noticed how the corners of Shuichi’s lips twisted ever so slightly before the taller boy forced them back down.
Now that wouldn’t do now would it?
“Shuuumaaaiiiii,” Kokichi reached up, squishing his boyfriend’s cheeks with his gloved hands. “Why won’t you smile for meeeeeee? I wanna see your pretty face!” He accentuated the plea with some fake tears, the moisture cold against the sensitive skin under his eyes.
His boyfriend simply blushed, fighting to look away from him as Kokichi’s hands remained firmly on his face. He was clearly trying to fight his lips from quirking up, thoroughly amused by his boyfriend’s cute antics.
And then the school bell ringed, and Shuichi escaped his clutches as he rushed towards his class, leaving Kokichi to catch up to him on his much smaller legs, yelling about how his boyfriend was the meanest person ever for abandoning him.
Attempt 2: Fail
———
Kokichi had been trying for weeks now, and it almost seemed like he would never succeed at seeing Shuichi’s beautiful dazzling smile. He wanted to see it so badly, wanted to know just how truly happy his boyfriend was.
And if he couldn’t make him smile while the two of them cuddled on the couch in Shuichi’s dorm room, hand interlocked with a cheesy rom-com playing on the TV, then he didn’t know what else he could possibly do.
As the characters on the screen leaned in for a kiss, Kokichi turned to his boyfriend, giving him pleading eyes as he tapped his own lips. Shuichi huffed but gladly obliged, capturing Kokichi’s lips with his own, causing a satisfied sigh to leave his throat.
The two of them lazily kissed for what seemed like hours, simply pressing their lips against the other’s, clinging as close to each other as they could get, only pausing to get a short breath of air before diving back in again.
Kokichi was in absolute heaven. Shuichi’s lips were wonderful and silky soft, moving against his perfectly like a perfectly choreographed dance. He truly couldn’t think of a time where he’d ever been happier than right in this moment, his beloved’s arms wrapped around him as their lips finally separated for good.
Kokichi was grinning like a lovesick fool, and it seemed like Shuichi was barely any better, the edges of those wonderful lips quirking up ever so slightly as he looked down at Kokichi with an expression full of utter love and adoration.
And just like that, the dam broke.
Finally, finally , Kokichi got to see how Shuichi’s lips stretched his face, his eyes crinkling and cheeks plump and pink with a pretty blush. His smile was radiant, lighting up the entire room and setting a flame alight in Kokichi’s heart.
He leaned forward, leaving tiny pecks all over Kokichi’s forehead, cheeks, nose, and finally his lips once more, the kiss difficult with just how wide Shuichi was grinning.
“I couldn’t hold back anymore,” Shuichi whispered, leaning in for another sweet kiss. “It was fun watching you bend over backwards to get me to smile, but I can’t do it anymore. You make me so happy. I love you.”
Kokichi didn’t even have the strength to be annoyed at him as his own smiling lips met his boyfriend’s once more.
Attempt 53: Success
