‘Cause I love you, it’s true

Summary:

Marinette and Félix test the waters of their relationship under the comfort of masks.

A standalone oneshot set in the Trickster AU, no need to have read the main fic to read this shot. This is just an exploration of a possible dynamic for felinette once they go from friends to something more before I really get into it in the main fic.

Notes:

(I don’t commemorate Valentine's, but I thought I’d post something today anyway.)

I’m so nervous about this shot. I wrote kisses before in my personal writing, but this is my first time sharing it.

And this was a genuine attempt at what the felinette relationship might progress into in the AU (no promises, tho. Nothing’s concrete about that fic till it’s written and posted as an actual chapter) and not just a self-indulgent piece without much thought on whether or not it would actually go like that once it reaches that point.

So, uh, here it is...

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

We’ll get out of this

We’ll get out of this too

I’m not proud of this

But I’m not proud of the truth

And if you run from me

Then I’ll use my trick on you

The truth is that we’re screwed

“Thank you,” she whispered, lifting her chin to place it on his shoulder.

“For what?” A hand brushed her back as it moved to rest behind her.

His breath hitched against her lips when his head turned to her. It tingled, but she kept her eyes on the way the faraway street lights shined on his greened gaze, accentuated by the white mask.

It was quite literally a dazzling vision.

“Everything.” Ladybug inched closer, resting a hand on his thigh. Trickster remained frozen. “I don’t think I can thank you enough.”

“You don’t have to thank me for anything.” There was a slight tremble in his voice, eyes flickering between hers.

She breathed in, quickly wetting her lips. Two heartbeats hammered in sync. Or was it just hers?

“Is this–” she breathed, raising her hand to caress where the edge of the mask touched his skin with the tip of her fingers. “Is this OK?”

He leaned into her touch, releasing a sigh. Fox-ears drooped a bit from their tense position. He nodded.

She tilted her head up, leaning closer and closer. He remained mostly still except for the quick and quiet rise and fall of his chest, mouth quivering almost imperceptibly. She hesitated, staring at the cyan gaze fixed on her. He looked like a scared animal with the way his slithed eyes were widened…

Ladybug rubbed a thumb over his cheek, biting her lip. His eyes flickered to them then back up with a quick intake of air.

Did he actually want this? Or was he just agreeing because of her? He was so stiff, maybe she was pushing too much.

She pulled away but a hand shot to the back of her head, startling her a bit. Trickster rested his forehead against hers, eyes squeezing shut.

“It is OK. Really. I’m just…” He lightly shook his head, letting out a bitter laugh. “I’m just being stupid. Sorry, I know it’s ridiculous. I do want this, but–”

She buried a hand in his hair, scraping the side of his head till his frantic breaths evened out a bit.

“You’re not being stupid and it’s not ridiculous. It’s just…” Her face contorted. “Just–”

She mentally cursed her lack of words and sighed then weaved her fingers to the back of his head, brushing her nose against his.

“Take your time,” she said softly. “I’m not going anywhere.”

He nodded again, his breath warming her face. His eyes were askance when he slightly opened them.

A clawed finger twirled the dark strands that framed her face, letting it slide off the white glove, then taking it again to twist it between his fingers. A red-gloved hand stroked the light locks flowing behind his head, brushing a thumb where the smooth material of a faux ear connected to his scalp, inciting a pleasant rumble to reverberate in his chest.

Eventually, his face grew nearer and her heartbeats grew intenser. She didn’t stop petting him in case it awakened him from this trance.

Because it was a trance, wasn’t it? His eyes were still focused on the strands tangled in his finger and even though she got better at reading him, she still had some trouble figuring out what he was thinking, and being this up-close didn’t–

Warm lips melded on hers.

Her hand stopped moving, dangled in his hair, eyelids fluttering down. But just as it came, it was soon gone. She held herself from seeking the retreating warmth. She needed it, but he needed to know he could trust her more.

A soft moan escaping her throat as claws grazed the tingling skin of her cheek.

Then the warmth was back.

She didn’t waste time savoring it. Her other hand lightly tugging at his suit jacket’s lapel as she pressed her chest closer to his. She wanted to taste more of that warmth but didn’t dare to deepen the kiss lest she scared him away.

He pulled back and she planted another kiss on the corner of his lips before she could think better of it, smiling at the giggle it got out of him.

A hand grazed along her arm as he detached himself from her. She promptly intertwined their fingers when it reached her palm.

She worried her cold lips in an attempt to get some warmth back. Did he take it or was it always his?

“Did you like it?” She glanced at him through her eyelashes.

He snickered, tailcoat coming to wrap around his propped up knees, squeezing her hand.

“I loved it.” He buried his head on his knees. “I love you. Please, don’t forget that. I’m sorry that–”

“Hey.” She squeezed his hand back, warmth spreading to her through it. “No need for that. We’re not in any rush, remember? I’ll wait as long as you need. I love you. Never forget that.”

Her heart constricted at the way he trembled. She rubbed his knuckles to comfort him, to pass the amount of affection she had for him, to show just how much she meant those words, but the trembling didn’t stop even as he tightened the hold on her hand.

“Trick,” she quietly called.

An ear flickered, but otherwise, he didn’t respond.

“Félix.”

The tailcoat bundled tighter around his frame, but he peeked up at her.

She shuffled forward, patting her lap with a gentle smile and an inquiring tilt of her head.

He didn’t move for a stretched-out minute then slowly nodded, tailcoat falling to the floor. She gently pulled him by the hand and he crawled to her lap, hunching as he snuggled on her chest. The warmth enveloped her entire being.

She wrapped an arm tightly around her fox, burying her face in his soft strands.

“Don’t you ever forget that,” she murmured.

We’ll get out of this

‘Cause I love you, I do

We’ll get out of this

‘Cause I love you, it’s true

But if you’re doubting this

If you’re doubting that I do

Then oh my God, I’m screwed

Notes:

Lyrics from the song The Trick by AJR.

Thanks to Applebear for motivating me to write this (this fic’s doc is called “Papika made me write this”) and encouraging me to share it.

Here’s some of my thought process for this shot as I told her:
“Yeah, [touch consent]’s a big thing because as a touch-aversed person that’s that’d be important to me, I think; Which is weird, cause I love reading about surprises and spontaneous kisses; But Trickster reflects what I’d like for reality way more than what I like in fiction tho that second one is also a big part, especially on the superhero side”
“Exploring they’re boundaries and how to navigate their intimacy is something I wanna do with Félix and Mari in Trickster; With Marinette having had her heart and trust broken by Adrien and other classmates, and Félix’s main exposition to [how a couple acts] being his parents [and fiction and the clear dissonance between them], it only makes sense [to me] that they’d thread their relationship carefully”

Other thoughts on it (also as I told them to Papika):
“the reason they’re transformed instead of in a date, or something like that, is because the suits makes it feel less “real”, as to say; it’s not because they don’t want to make it real, it’s because they don’t feel ready for it to be real”

And last but not least:
“now to figure out how to balance out this progression with the plot rushing at me [in the main fic]......”

On the actual fic news, I already have chapter 39 already written and I already started on 40 and will resume updates in March’s first week (if there’ll be a schedule or if it’ll be back to the spontaneous updates when a chapter is ready is something I’ll decide then).

And if you just stumbled onto this fic with no clue of the main work, Trickster is the first fanfic I ever posted here and my main project on Ao3 (aka my baby). Marinette loses the fox miraculous, Félix finds it, hijinks ensues, the characters go haywire and I somehow end up with a family drama storyline on my hands. Give it a look if that sounds interesting.
Either way, thanks for reading <3

And before I go:
